Article from "The Black Snob"

Comment of the Day: Return of the Gemini

One reader, Khia213, was nice enough to share with me her personal brush with Prince in the comments thread on my BET Awards post. It was such a fun read I thought I'd share it on the homepage. Save you the trouble of digging through the comments. Enjoy!

Comment after the jump.

The very short version. Best friend discovered she was in remission from cancer. Bought her tickets to a Prince foundation concert of less than 4000 people to celebrate. We wait outside the venue in the freezing cold for TWO HOURS cause homeboy was late. No explanation for said lateness. I'm standing directly in front of the stage with less than four feet between me and the Artist. Pissed off about the two hour wait and looking every bit of annoyed as hell. He looks at me and says, through the microphone, no less, "What's wrong with you?" I spit out "I ain't feeling you, son!" He blinked. Twice. And backed up. He kept singing, but the next thing I know, here come his bodyguards, Goliath and Godzilla. There are mountains smaller than these guys. I think, 'bout to be put out this piece. They walk up on me and say "We hear you ain't feeling Prince." "Yeap, that would be me," I reply. They bust out laughing. "Well, he wants you to feel better" and they hand me his gold engraved guitar picks. Five minutes later, his road manager comes up to me and says "We hear you're not feeling our boy" and points backstage where all the roadies and the techs are standing. Yeap. He gives me the passes to the after party. We celebrated remission in fine fashion that night.

The moral of the story is: If you insult a Gemini man about some shortcoming , he will bust his ass to prove you wrong. Hence my ongoing love for the artist known as Prince.

What a pussy. Two hours waiting in the cold for a show is some standard shit where I come from.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

hmmm I guess it's all about how you look at it.

It could just be as simple as him having a smaller audience (as compared to an arena crowd), closer proximity to the front row, and able to interact a bit more.

If I was speaking to a roomful of people (best thing I can liken it to) and there was someone in the front row looking "every bit as annoyed as hell", I'd be tempted to find out what was up and try to remedy it too.

Realistically though, it's not normally possible when you're dealing with the sort of numbers P plays to, even at a smaller concert - I think it's cool (if not a little bit of a stunt) that he did.

Yeah, maybe he couldn't handle one person not feeling him (do we have any idea when this happened?), but I suspect more likely he saw an opportunity to make a couple of people's night after a crappy start, and he did so.

Holy shit. I waited 3 hours for that sonofabitch to hit the stage back in 1992... after waiting an hour to get into the arena and after a 45 minute set by Soundgarden.

Great fucking show, though. Now, Axl Rose does not believe in time - that's for sure.

he could always try being on time instead of making people wait for 2 hours lol

the idea of him walking on to a stage, noticing someone isnt happy, and he wonders why they're not feelin him? LOL

must've been nice being prince; totally oblivious to the obvious, but that's ok, he can just throw some free passes at them and miss the point entirely.

as long as they are showing him the love he wants, why should he bother learning the lesson? or even care?

this too shall pass

It's ot, but..:

Associates of wayward Guns N'Roses mainman Axl Rose have defended his behaviour during his recent UK shows, where he appeared late on stage every night and treated his audience to angry outbursts at Reading and Dublin.

Former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach, who’ll support GN'R on their planned return to the UK in October, says there’s no secret behind Rose’s late starts.

Bach says: "Everybody has all these theories as to why he acts the way he acts. And there’s no big mystery: it’s his voice.!

"It’s his job to sing like that, and sometimes that sound is hard for him. To sing in that range is just not an easy thing to do. He does what he can – even if it takes him 45 more minutes to warm up his pipes so he can sing Sweet Child O’Mine."

falloff Why doesn't he just start warming up 45 minutes earlier? lol

Yeah, I've read that before. And you're exactly right. But these are rock stars... no one should be surprised when they come on way late. They're used to pissing of fans 20,000 at a time. lol

Fair enough, but I did follow that link and the person who told the story in the first place had posted this addendum in the comments:

If I had known you were going to do this, I'd have added at least one other detail - He was

two hours late because the air traffic control system in Cleveland went out as his plane was

approaching the airport. They couldn't land. He was late through no fault of his own.

Guess he felt bad about making us wait.

I realise you're speaking more broadly about his behaviour, but in this particular case it sounds like it was genuinely out of his hands.

I'm sure a lot of the time it is nice being Prince. I bet a similar amount of time it sucks caboodle.
