First Avenue: reason for 20 year break? Hi all, found this while looking up something on Wikipedia:
On July 7, 2007 Prince returned to his hometown of Minneapolis to perform three shows in what was unofficially declared Prince Day in Minnesota. He performed concerts at the Macy's Auditorium (to promote his new perfume "3121") on Nicollet Mall, the Target Center arena, and First Avenue.[78] It was the first time he had played at First Avenue, the club made famous in the film Purple Rain, since 1987.[79]
Anyone here he knows the reason why he didn't play the place which made him famous for such a long period of time? |

he had paisley park to put on small and impromptu shows, he was already paying for that, so why use another place in town? |

to whom? the club or fans? he played plenty of time at paisley for the fans. with venues you have to book in advance, which is no use for a superstar playing an impromptu gig and pointless when he has his own venue
the venue is just a business, they get paid for it's use, and they have benefited plenty from prince fans visiting it because of prince. it's not like it's the same owners who have had it all the time
and it's prince your talking about. loyalty isn't in his dictionary |

Who has ever questioned that but those stricken with Prince Dementia? People know why Prince didn't play that venue - he didn't have to. A lot of people talk about how Prince operates in a way that is everchanging and new. Well, part of that is eschewing those landmarks and ideals that once categorized him. If he had always played at First Avenue, I suppose one would think of First Avenue when they thought of Prince rather than the other way around. That's in direct conflict with Prince's idea of who Prince is and his idea of what his fans think Prince is. |

i just noticed that the word loyalty is almost the same as the word royalty - hope i'm not coming down with a case of PD lol
in fairness to the PD sufferers, i think some think he thinks the way they think, and maybe they think the way they think because of how he thinks.
at the very least its good to know there's a lot of people who'd rather see the best in him, even if it isnt there, than only seeing the worst.
but i do agree that a good dose of reality might save a few from padded cell peril.
just not sure how they'd cope when they find out the absolute truth about their prince. this too shall pass |

Glam Slam was used for the Diamonds and Pearls tour warm up, as well as Paisley Park. The Act I tour warm up was at Glam Slam. The Act II warm up shows were at Paisley Park. 1994/1995 he was doing shows at all 3 Glam Slams, as well as Paisley Park. After the Glam Slams closed, everything basically has been done at Paisley Park. [Edited 8/22/10 15:00pm] TRUE BLUE |

that's cuz he was trying to spread the glam slam brand, but he literally only did about a handful of gigs out of all the glam slams in the world, maybe 10 in total, whereas he was playing pretty much weekly, with a period of more than once a week at paisley |

I personally went to 14 out of the 15 shows he did at Glam Slam in Minneapolis alone, not sure where you're getting, or not getting your info. He did 9 at Glam Slam LA, 6 at Glam Slam Miami, and 1 at Glam Slam Yokohama. TRUE BLUE |

ok, so that's only 30 shows across the world. how many has he done at paisley? he did about 25 in august/september 95 alone. as you can see, my estimate wasn't completly accurate, but the point is that compared to the number of paisley park gigs there were comparitively few glam glam shows. it was another phaze that lasted a short period |

I never said he didn't do shows at Paisley Park, nor did I make a statement comparing how many shows he did at Glam Slam vs. Paisley Park, but they were invite only/private until the summer of 1995 when they became open to every Tom, Dick, and Harry who wanted to go. He did more shows at Glam Slam Minneapolis than he did at First Avenue. You could also say that the Paisley Park shows were another phase from 1995-2002. He's only done a handful since then. the OP was asking why he didn't play first ave in 20 years, the reason being he has paisley and had glam slam. question answered |

That would be because he never played First Avenue all that much in the first place anyway.
It's only because of the Purple Rain movie that people associate him with that particular venue
so much. The reality was that he didn't play there any more than anyone else.
And as others have pointed out, Prince had his own places to play (Paisley Park & Glam Slam),
so there was no need to hire other venues. [Edited 8/24/10 0:45am] |
