If Sign O the Times followed Purple Rain

What are your thoughts?

If Sign was the follow up album to Purple Rain, how do you think people would have reacted? PR is obviously Prince's album, yet SOTT obtains significant critical acclaim. Could having it follow after the hype of PR have made it even bigger than PR?

As far as commercial sucsess goes, it would have been a monster with many hits.

If the sky was truly purple and people were running everywhere, would microfibre still be the nouveau fabric at Jo Ann's?

To me that was his last best album. After that he fell off hard.

I always looked at Prince's Purple Rain to be his Innervisions with Sign O The Times as his Songs In The Key Of Life. 2 masterpiece classics divided by time and space so it can have its OWN cultural impact. cool

Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER

Shit, his legacy would have been epic(it already is, but just saying). Could you imagine 1999, PR, and SOTT back to back to back?

It would have been interesting for sure, but musically would he have evolved to that point? I think after Purple Rain, as much as some fans and critics may argue, he needed to have ATWIAD and Parade.

What if he released Emancipation and then Controversy and then Rave. And what if Diamonds and Pearls was actually titled Jughead.

I don't think he should have released any films, they are all crap, including PR and SOTT.

No title could make D&P any worse than it already is.

I certainly think it would have been a more popular album since there would have been this instant rush to buy it, and all the media would still be pushing the tunes and videos on the wake of Purple Rain to jump on any popular bandwagon to gain popularity, so everything by effect would have been more popular just through exposure.

But then you might wonder what would have happned if Raspberry Beret and Kiss were on SOTT? They could fit. Where would they fit? You'd have had a ridiculously popular album and if eh had also released the SOTT concert film, his legend of being a concert god would have been cemented in hte popular mind (whereas right now, it's not)
