Usually I can tell a Prince song by the music before he even begins to sing. ARock said that his girlfriend couldn't stand his voice. The same goes for a friend of mine, who digs the music, but then can't listen to the song once the singing starts.

Interestingly, most female singers cannot sing the high notes Prince is able to hit. It has something to do with the length of their vocal chords, a male's becoming longer after puberty.

^Off topic, but....

That irritates me! Guys being able to sing both high and low... confused

WAS able to hit

i don't think his voice got him by in the industry, instead it was his looks and talent. he really has a weak voice.

That was my first thought!!! No one can do it quite like him...mmm, that voice of his just cuts through to my soul!! I usually can tell it's him to by the way he makes me feel when I hear it. You just know his voice. He's got that manly deep voice with a bit of a nasely sound to it...it sounds soooo good! lol And I'd recognize his falsetto anywhere. It is high pitched, but still has his man sound to it. His voice just always sounds to me like he's thinking "I'm sexy and I know it" when he sings! lol

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

his voice is multiinstrumental, full of vocal variety -- theres the guitar, the horns, the synthesizer, etc. he sings with his voice. he uses his voice to make sounds that most people only try to make with instruments.

And he knows how to layer his voices well to make it resonant and deep, not flat-sounding. it may not be an opera voice, but it's so diverse that i think prince could make a jammin acapella record.

on a side note (i'd like to know if this is discussed on a separate thread), i think prince is one of the best backup singers i have heard -- at least for sheila e, nona gaye and even ani difranco, his backup vocals so perfectly complete their vocals that my ears do a double take. how does he do that? like a subtle magical twin... but yeah, that nasal quality is what i first recognize.
