Outside of the acting, everything else about Purple Rain is Oscar worthy, even outside of the music. that's why it was so big. And why so many kids copied the vibe of that movie (candles, trenchcoats, even motorcycles!)

People actually felt quite emotional at the end of the movie (I wasn't into Prince, but I remember my friends talking about it), I remember one friend saying that the part where Prince sings "Purple Rain" was incredible.

You can imagine that what the movie does is: present a buildup of negativity and suffering centered around it's protagonist (like in Rocky or Karate Kid) that then culminates in a sort of glorious, emotional crucifixion (the singing of Purple Rain, a tremendously powerful song under the weight of all the narrative before it, and the eyes of the audience in the film and in the audience) which results in everything kind of magically being okay and celebratory...

It's funny that Prince tried to have the same formula with Graffiti Bridge but it's not written, directed, paced, or constructed with the great quality that's in Purple Rain.

The only reason that I watched Graffiti Bridge was to see the original lineup of The Time struttin' their funky stuff.

Wish that I didn't bother. The movie was badly acted, badly filmed, the script was laughable, the only saving grace was the songs and they weren't up to much either.

One of the songs that I liked off the soundtrack was ''The Latest Fashion'' didn't even appear in the bloody film.

Didn't stop me buying the film on DVD though haha

i agree it would be interesting to see what kind of movie he'd make these days.

This is the sequal to Purple Rain, it's 6 years later and The Time are still annoying Prince who writes imaginary letters to his desceased father looking for answers.
Purple Rain, although great, was quite a heavy film so this is a funky light hearted relief from that. The music is completely different from the first film and is mostly funk and soul, which shows how much Prince's music changes almost with every album.
People may be surprised and put off at first with this film because unlike Purple Rain being a real drama set in minneapolis, this film's streets and scenes were mostly constructed in his Paisley Park studios and look quite unreal at times with the fake lighting etc. Like a comic book.
But I love this different approach. Variety is the spice of life and Prince demonstrates that in his movies as well as his music.
Also this is a much more spiritual movie than the first one. Prince is searching for spiritual answers and writes the questions in graffiti on his wall. He comes across the mysterious Aura who tries to tell him the truth.
I understand that this may go over some people's heads so they may rate it lower, but I'm spiritual so I like this!
I also understand others views that the acting wasn't as dramatic and serious as Purple Rain, but it wan't supposed to be! Like I said this is a good light-hearted break from that. And lots of funky music to enjoy with it!

I've seen Sign o' the Times 57 times.

To me Graffiti Bridge was the explanation of the whole Black Album/Lovesexy thing.

He explained where he saw himself in today's (1990s) music world. Its sad because he got the point across 100% and it was actually the most honest he had ever been with us fans...but the movie was a turd.

I saw it on opening night...packed house at the theater with long lines outside. I was so excited...and then it started. WOW. People were laughing their asses off at all of the parts that werent supposed to be funny. That was hands down my most embarassing moment as a Prince fan.

Morris and Jerome were hilarious, though.

It is probably the only Prince movie that I could never bring myself to buy, even on Ebay for $5/free shipping. Idk...it wasn't good.

Prince is not an actor. The opportunity came along for the Purple Rain movie, and it did well. The story line was good, but in all honesty the acting in all of the movies were horrible. I love his music, but leave the acting to people like Charlton Heston.. LOL

I usually regret the post, and wish I could get Prince to kill the internet again to take the post away. So, my initial thoughts were that he was seriously exposing his "spiritual" nature in this film. Am I crazy or was that billowing white long shirt with one black shoulder strap, his long hair and way too much facial hair supposed to make him look like the typical Jesus images? especially in some of the later scenes in the movie...for example he is standing in the above described costume with his arms sorta crossed and his hands hidden inside the sleeves, while his whole band is gathered around behind him...very disciple-ish...also while he is singing Still Would Stand All Time, there is a very diliberate cross/crucifixion pose that he hits a couple of times.

Overall, I liked the movie...I wouldn't for a second call it a sequel to Purple Rain (which the dvd cover hints at.) It made me wish he would do another movie. It would be interesting to see what he comes up with at this stage in his life, in comparison to PR, UTCM and GB. I think the Prince of today might focus a film more on social, political and global issues as opposed to the women/muse/relationship and music industry issues of the previous films.

$4.95? u got rip off!

Best things about Purple Rain film beside the music:

-Great cinematography, beautiful details of shadows and lights, focus and out of focus, very Bob Fosee.

-Great editing, it was hyper and fresh, the phase was electrifying.

-Great costume designs, the clothes bring a special atmosphere of the purple universe, very hard to pull in a film that takes place in the real world.

-Great performances, it's a shame that when it comes to musicians acting Oscars don't give credit to the musical numbers, the on stage performances are amazing, hypnotic, Prince manage to mix the story and the musical numbers in an amazing way.

-Great choreography, original and unique.

-Morris Day, great comic actor.

I remember that the San Diego Union Tribune film critic compare Prince performance to Marlon Brando in The Wild One and both Siskel & Ebert put the movie in their Top 10 of the year.

Swdee....We do not have to agree, that's cool that you like G Bridge...somebody has to right? Taken seriously? No, I couldn't take it seriously. I also don't take empty Candy Wrappers seriously either. And I won't spend 90 minutes watching an empty Candy Wrapper either.

Look, I think Gone With The Wind is the biggest Turd ever made. The Wizard of Oz was made the same year, and it took that forever to become a classic. I don't think Graffiti Bridge has the chance to be a classic. It is so funny that Prince used the Oz analogy back in the day...thinking it would be loved one day.

Its dreadful, its sitting right in front of me on my DVD shelf, and yet I never feel compelled to put it on. The Sign o the times disc on the other hand, hardly ever sits in its case.
