I strangled Valentino

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Totally Agree. All the Purple Rain intros for that matter. Wendy. Yes Lisa. Is the water warm enough.

The guitar burst on WDC. The drum intro to Take Me With U. The guitar intro to the Title track.

Oooh this is a fun thread. Hmmm...

"Billy Jack Bitch" 4:51-5:01

Easily one of his funkiest songs ever put on wax and the horns build up to a crescendo before crashing down like a waterfall. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

"We Can Funk" 4:10-4:20

The backing vocals kick in over the "You can funk me baby. I'll funk you." lyrics and the horns are darting in and out over those pounding drums.

"The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" 2:40-2:50

When he says, "Lemme tell you what I did (ooooh-wa!)." the hairs on my arms stand up.

"I Know" 3:48-3:58 (also 4:10-4:20)

Where the track breaks down, hits the wah-wah, then kicks back in with a resounding "YES!" You can't find shit like this anywhere else.

"Joint 2 Joint" 4:36-4:46

Track breaks down and the falsetto kicks in with funny lyrics. Classic Prince swagger. "Let me caress your nappy hair" comes right after and its one of the few times Prince has made me crack up upon first listen.

There's others, but this is a few of my fav.

Great choices.

In Something in the Water, the rising falsetto note that turns into a scream. You know the one. I will never - ever - be able to do anything except drop whatever I'm doing and stand stock still when this moment happens. One of the most perfect moments in music I have ever heard.

A few more (sorry for no times):

Lady Cab Driver- the breakdown over the pleasured female

Lovesexy- the gender change mind fuck

Anotherloverholenyohead- "We were brothers sisters united all for love..."

Irresistible B- "...but they don't know the things you do to me when we're alone."

One Kiss at a Time- that pause that lasts forever

When the Lights Go Down- the beginning of his vocals following the long piano intro

Dionne- "I should have broke down and kissed you, I should've but I just miss you."

Too many to name- Great Thread!

it's more than 10 seconds, and I'm not even sure if it's my favorite because I never thought of a favorite 10 seconds before, but from 4:38 to 5:05 of the thieves in the temple remix is great, ending with the "you done me wrong" scream.

I think this is one of the greatest Prince songs ever. Its a shame its relatively obscure.

Heck its probably one of the Best Prince albums ever. If he had performed this album himself it would rank right up there with his 80's best.

Feel like a nerd to admit that my Jill Jones CD is one of my most treasured Prince Cd's in my collection, and that it sits in a safe along with my original "8" "16", Parade, SOTT and The Family Cd's

sorry i'm no music expert, but these always lift my heart anyways, i'll be back with exact numbers...

the opening of this is not music this is a trip

the opening piano of in2 the light -- sounds like out of some wintertime dreamtime winter...

come -- there are several 10 second pieces of horn(y) perfection, near the end, somewhere

the extended version of raspberry beret near the beginning where all the sounds are getting warmed up and sounding all funky

the opening of around the world in the day, when the percussion enters after that flute, and you feel you could be waking up in perelandra or some enchanted place

if anyone can better articulate the instances i tried to describe, i need help like that...

i agree about that love2the9's line

also there are these parts of can't stop this feeling i got and elefants and phlowers that have so much going on, very nutritious

Ooh, it'll be fun trying to think of some good examples for this. But I don't think anything will top the one that immediately came to my mind:

"Yo, relative...u just gonna play the line over...gimme this!"

The ten or so seconds right after that.

I couldn't agree more! That song is one of Prince's best jams.

1st off, I had no idea so many people dug the same parts of songs that I did. Strange but awesome. Here r my contributions:

Trust (3:15-3:25) The key change pretty much takes me to church service at this point

Days of Wild (Crystal Ball Version) (3:51-4:01) "Right there, don't move". Brotha's about 2 give U THE BIZNESS.

Return of the Bump Squad (2:08-2:18) The bliss of pure funk played by an incredibly tight band right here

Chelsea Rodgers (4:03-4:13) P calls Greg's solo and it feels like the old days where U tuck in 4 several more minutes of funk.

Baby Knows (Extended Version) (3:16-END) Probably the worst case of Prince blue balls in a while. 4 a second U get all excited because it's like the old days and he's about 2 break out in an extended jam and take the song 2 places U never thought possible. Just before it ends abruptly, but that guitar solo is cool as hell.

Mia Bocca (6:52-7:02) The inclusion of the riff from "1999" is SICK!

Thieves in the Temple (Remix) (5:29-5:39) This part rocks my world every time I hear it. Lawd the drums!

Dreamer (1:49-2:09) Great lyric sung with passion. This whole song is pretty ferocious but I love the emotion in his voice here.

Diamonds and Pearls (2:35-2:45) I love Michael B's drum work on this track, particularly at this point.

and many more I'm sure...

I know nothing about how music is made, or music theory, but there is a part of "U Got the Look" that gets me every time. Near the end, after Sheena says "Oh please", then Prince sings "Of boy, versus girl, in the world series of love"....the music there "drops" (for lack of a better term) and I love it so much.

Very good thread! It sheds light on the music and the feeling of a song, which is talked about so little over here...

I've got a few nominees:

Shhh (3:56-4:06)

I think this is one of the best "break downs" in the history of drumming. The singing and the lyrics and explicitly sexy and erotic and this is one of his best screams ever, although it's short. I also love the "synth" backing vocals in that part. This part is surrounded by thrilling guitar solos.

I Hate U (2:57-3:07)

My favourite Prince song. I'd say that the "court room scene" is the best piece of music ever recorded (you can disagree if you want to; I won't listen to you). His vocals in this part are the most passionate I ever heard him sing. Plus, I love how lyrics, melody and arrangement go hand in hand and expand each other's meaning and power.

If I Was Your Girlfriend (2:50-3:00)

Amazing vocals and arrangement. I love the little harmonic shift in the synths there and the overall build-up. Wow.

The part in She's Always In My Hair that has already been mentioned by the OP.

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World [single version] either 2:25-2:35 or 4:05-4:15

because of sheer vocal brilliance.

i am soo with u on "i hate you"..the spoken part is so intense and passionate like u said...i LOVE it!
