I always assumed that was a 1999 outtake.

Yes, one of the few versions of "Possessed" was played as Morris is smooth talking Apollonia.

The song was recorded on May 24, 1983, which makes it a Purple Rain outtake. It was recorded at his home studio, as he was home working on music after the 1999 tour had just ended in April.

The version in the movie is on The Work, and called "Instrumental Version". It clocks at almost 7:30. The "Vocal Version" is more classic 80's Prince sounding, and is about 8:43, and I love this version. It could have easily ended up on 1999, with it's longer time, and jam feel to it. I would have even let "All The Critics" pass to have "Possessed" on that album, but of course it wasn't written yet.

There's another version that is coupled with "Irresistible Bitch", I believe, as a medley of sorts. I think it's an official version (outtake), but it's been eons since I've heard it. Perhaps someone can clear that point up for us.

You're thinking of the version from the "Prince & The Revolution Live 1985" Video.

What's interesting is that there is a "live" cut of "Computer Blue" that was originally considered for the album, but P opted for the studio version we know now for the album. By "live" I mean that it was recorded in one take with the band, like "Let's Go Crazy" was recorded. That LGC version ended up on the album. The "Computer Blue" version did not. THAT is what I'd love to hear.

That must be "Computer Blue #1"... The raw version recorded "live" in the Warehouse, same place as LGC, with the raw vocal "Somebody please tell me what the fuck is wrong"?

Keep your headphones on.

That version of Computer Blue is circulating.

There weren't really many true outtakes from Purple Rain as far as I know.

Obviously there were a lot of songs recorded around that time, but the only ones confirmed to

have been intended for Purple Rain were...

Electric Intercourse (replaced by The Beautiful Ones)

G-Spot (replaced by Darling Nikki)

Wednesday (intended for Jill Jones to sing at the piano prior to handing W&L's tape to the Kid)

Father's Song (used in the movie, melody also forms part of 2nd part of Computer Blue)

Mia Bocca (listed in original Dreams script)

Other than that, there were various alternate and early versions of songs that did make it to

the final album and movie as well.

What about the piece of music that Prince plays on cassette for Appollonia. You know, she's crying it's backwards. Does it have a name, and (apart from the movie) can it be heard elsewhere??

Me too, i never even knew it existed till i read the list, but that is what it says, course it could be wrong.

I'm questioning it. I know there is a longer version of the song, but it's still taken from the original First Avenue recording where it was recorded along with "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain". It was one of the songs that was edited down when he put "Take Me With U" on the record (others suffering that fate were "Computer Blue", "Darling Nikki", and "The Beautiful Ones"). The mix is good and might be mistaken for a "studio" version, perhaps.

What's interesting is that there is a "live" cut of "Computer Blue" that was originally considered for the album, but P opted for the studio version we know now for the album. There's no doubt Prince probably worked on IWD4U, BIAS, and Purple Rain in the studio (either home or elsewhere) before they recorded them at First Avenue, and that there might be some sort of studio recording. IIRC, "BIAS" was written as far back as 1981 or 1982.

Hell, with the exorbitant amount of overdubs on those three tracks, one could damn well consider it a studio version anyway.

Based on his penchant for starting with a studio verison and then only releasing "live band" version of such songs as Days of Wild, I wouldn't doubt there is a solo Prince studio version of all the quasi live Purple Rain album songs.

But it has been written that there were studio version of Baby I'm a Star and Purple Rain. and I don't mean in an Islamic way "written".

I've heard that referred to as "Midnight Rendezvous".

Not sure if that's it's official title or whether it's just a descriptive term, due it using the same

(or very similar) beat to the later Sheila E track: Noon Rendezvous.

Thank you. Do you know if it goes for longer than the snippet we hear in Purple Rain? And can it be heard somewhere other than in the movie?

I have no record of I WOULD DIE 4 U being worked on in the studio before the 8/3/83. The first time I see it in my notes being worked on is on 8/31/83 and Prince used the live version. He may have recorded a demo at his home studio, but from my research, I haven't heard of that. I am not saying it doesn't exist, but I have no record of it. (drawn from an early draft of PRINCE: THE STUDIO SESSIONS).

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

I'm sure the full track is longer, but the snippet heard in the movie is the only place you can hear it.

Never heard an original studio version of Purple Rain, but there's definitely one for Baby I'm A Star (it's pretty similar to the released one, only sparser, more demo-ey and piano-lead)

Does it sound good? Often I think the demos capture a more stronger spirit (in the case of some Beatles stuff too). Baby I'm a Star is the one track I like the least on Purple Rain, I always thought it was kind of lame and not exciting (although extending it with all the different jams in concert was exciting). I'm curious and know that the demo had piano lead. I bet I might like it better if it ever if I ever heard it.
