you aint heard this til you hear the FULL version.with the FULL intro.....its an absolute classic....prince's best song of the 90s....although it was written in the 80s.....its in his best ten songs for me.....music critic billy sloan once reviewed it by saying there was more great ideas in this one song than in most other artists full albums.....couldn't agree more....

The best live performance he ever did of this was at the emancipation release concert.

The arrangement was incredible. Furthermore, his guitar playing was sublime - Totally heartfelt and intense. I cant help but feel the personal sadness he was experiening at the time was fueling the emotion in solo that night. The beautiful, raw bends he plays at the end of the song are some of the best guitar playing i have ever seen him do.. just packed with feeling. Then he hits that chaotic run before resolving with the sweet and hopeful flanged chord as he waves goodbye sad I never saw prince look as vulnerable as he does at the end of that performance.

On the other hand, The 'it aint ova' version is tepid in comparison. It sounds histrionic and lacking in soul. It also goes on too long without really going anywhere - guitar masturbation to my ears.

I'll take the emacipation performance over that version any day of the week.

There's a version form those Las Vegas jazz days that I heard that is really good. But the ooriginal song is so great. I wish I had a true studio version with the lone drum intro. Splicing with the bootleg is not quite the pristine quality I want.

One of his best songs, ever. Lyrics are absolutely fantastic. Musically it is breathtaking. The arrangement is fantastic. I absolutely love it.

This was a song that really sealed the deal for me of Prince's ability to create drama (narrative drama) in a song. I had this on vinyl in 1988 on "Chocolate box" (along with Moviestar, Data Bank, Girl of my Dreams/Can't Stop This Feeling I Got/We Can Funk)...

and I remember deciphering the lyrics by listening to the record in parts over and over and writing down what I thought they said (the audio quality of that boot wasn't the best). And as it came into shape, and I understood the storyline, and the reveal of the "two words"... it was great.

....masterpiece, great harmonies, great lyrics, fantastic guitar, if I could pick just one song from each album this one is it for me from Graffiti Bridge.
