I am close to what you are complaining about. I do LISTEN to each song. There are tons on this site who can only HEAR the songs, as their quota of liking new songs has gone down with age. Sure, the quality of music by Prince, and most others has gone way down in the last 15 years or so. I may not love every stinking moment of every recent Prince and U2 Cd from the last few years, but I take the time to LISTEN, and find much to enjoy. Just like athletic ability and sex drive (supposedly..lol) go down with age, I think people's patience with music and trying any new experience go downhill with age. Find a 65 year old man who likes Kurt Cobain & Nirvana, and I will find 5,000 who like the opera and classical music, and hate Nirvana.

I do not conisder myself "Special," but I do conisder myself lucky, as I have not had any issues with being able to open up and LISTEN to music. I am human, and do fail from time to time, and ignore good things when I should take notice.

I know FAR, FAR, FAR, too many people who have no idea that Prince and U2 have had recent releases. "Oldies" radio has programmed many to believe that the artists we love have 10 staple hits, and do not release new material. U2 even opened their next tour leg by playing 2.5 new songs!!! Some were happy, and some were calling the new songs awful...give it time!

I have always said if you look at the back of a cd and it looks super clean, it has not really been listend to. If it has a few scuffs here and there...than maybe it has, or maybe you have a bad stereo.

Now, if you can't grasp this, and do not like the music no matter what, just move on, and do not listen. Some people hack on this site for dear life, knowing damb well they haven't liked a Prince song since 1988. If that is you....leave. Would you go to a restaurant that used to be 5 Star, and now is serving up burned toast and sour milk as their only offering? No, you would RUN!!!

Yep! As a musical locust, I tend to pick an album, listen it to death, and move on (same with bands). Whenever people rave about songs I've never heard of, I get totally lost. I JUST NOW realized what this Joy in Repitition fuss is about. It's not that good. :\

I'm with you. I am a hardcore Prince fan from his first decade or so. I'm totally lost when it comes to his newer music. I've listened to a lot of it, but just can't get into it.

Same here, Its like Im programmed 2 the 80's & 90's funk.. I have tried 2 listen 2 the first few songs on Planet Earth etc about 20 times but then I just get 2 thinking "life is short" and reach 4 my cd with scarlett pussy or soft & wet neutral

I just don't get you people!! I remember defending Parade in high school with other people my age who just could not get into an album that wasn't Purple Rain or 1999. It is normal for humans to like music the way they like food. Fast Food doesn't just make money because it is cheap...it is easy to get into. Prince had wanted to take the risk and see if his audience could grow with him. Although ATWIAD sold a lot, as he could have followed up Purple Rain with anything and sold. Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy, and Graffiti Bridge combined did not sell that well. Bridge was the first time he had really taken a step back with Quality Control, but it still had more bright moments than most music out there.

I am probably guilty of overblowing the same point, but if Parade, SOTT, and Lovesexy all sold less combined or about the same as Diamonds And Pearls...then it is doubtful a fan could get into Prince's new music without taking the time to really listen. I am so lucky that I get Prince's music...or maybe I am just confused...but I have always felt like a member of an exclusive club of "underground" music appreciator. If there was one example I could give about comparing downtrends in someone's career: R.E.M.

I have bought every single R.E.M. Cd, and after 1994's Monster, each subsequent Cd got worse, and worse. Some say that Monster started the downfall...but I love it. Finally with Accelerate...has R.E.M. even came close to finding their sound. And it was an album with very short songs, and the best thing about it, is it is the first album not worse than the one before it.

Prince never lost his sound, but save for New Power Soul, and MPLS Sound, he has released tons of music that you probably do not have enough patience for. The first part of his career is like watching the big blockbuster movie. The last 15/20 years or so is like watching the drama that has a few snags, but is almost every bit as rewarding.

Problem with Prince is..big problem @ that.. 2 things

1. The restrictions of being with WB that made Prince good

2. Have now been replaced with the restrictions of being with JW that make him , kinda bad

neutral
