Cuica Drum on Alphabet Street: From Me and Julio?

Hey,

I officially have to get a life.

Does anyone know if the cuica drum on Alphabet Street (3:20) is a sample from Paul Simon's Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (:10) ?

They sound...identical.

Odd source for inspiration, but given that it was '87 or so, maybe not so odd?

Also, does Prince have bunions on his feet? Just kidding.

Thanks.

Nicely spotted. To my ears, they sound extremely similar, although I can't say I've heard enough

of this instrument to say whether or not it's a definitive match.

I wonder... I always thought it was just another instrument Sheila left over at his place..

Yeah he may have been inspired to recreate that sound but there's no way he sampled that in 1987, I don't hear any clear spot on "Me and Julio" to get a clean sample of that drum loop without the acoustic guitars coming through (unless they were hard panned on separate channels, but from the youtube clip at least it doesn't sound like it), especially with the technology they had back then (only in the last year or two have I met a guy who developed a method of completely removing instruments from samples, and even then it's a pretty involved process using his custom written software as well as currently available graphic editing software)

I don't even know of him using samplers until the Batman album, and even then not using sampled drum sounds/loops from other peoples records until the Symbol album (well there might be a few in "Get Off")

He always seemed up on the synthesizer and drum programming game but he never seemed like a very skilled sampler to me, at least in the sense of what some of the hip hop guys and groups like NIN (who actually sampled a lot of sound from Prince) were doing around that time

doubtful it was sampled, as Sheila played it on the Lovesexy tour live. So looks like it was recorded with an actual cuica drum.

"Tick Tick Bang"? "Release It"? "Love... Thy Will Be Done"?
