Anyone heard the tribute band "1999"?

They're coming to Houston this weekend. I've never seen a tribute band, and frankly, their web snippets ain't the greatest. But these guys look like they get around, so I'll take the word of anyone that's seen them before.

1999: A Tribute to the Artist is made up of rock 'n' roll musicians who bring to life the music of one of their biggest influences - Prince.

Based in Chapel Hill, N.C., 1999 pays tribute to Prince by performing nearly 2 hours of The Artist's greatest hits at venues across the nation. With Hugh Swaso as Prince, Jamie McFarlane on bass, Justin Holder on drums and Lance Ashley on the keys, 1999 is a visual and sonic voyage back to a time of big hair, gold chains and little red Corvettes. When not in costume, the members of 1999 rock their original music as the band SWASO. This dynamic group gives audiences an experience like no other.

Whether you're 9 or 99, 1999 is a party not to be missed!

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The only thing remotely ringing true to a Prince band is that the Doctor Fink character in the band is as fat as the real one is today.

I saw that - at the HOB. Thinking of going too, it's only $10 if I can convince 3 others to come on one of the HOB's 4-pack ticket offers.

Mind you, it's paired up with a Chic tribute, which puts me off, as do the $11.75 cans of beer.

Might do a 'I'll-see-how-I-feel' thing next Saturday night.

The Chic/disco band looks funny as all get-out. Check out their website. One of them claims to be the lovechild of Joe Jackson and Mrs. Osmond. LOL.

Be sure to police everyone else that disses Bria, Apollonia, Vanity, Morris, Jill, Susan, Susannah, Wendy, Lisa, Brenda, or anyone else. We wouldn't want to think you're biased or anything.

Hey this is ok! Got in free (no idea why). House of blues fuller than I've seen it! Came in after some fine rogue dead guys... Man they know beer in Oregon... to take me with u then raspberry beret now I wanna b your lover . Seeing other people do prince songs shows how great the songs are, although obviously I didn't need reminding! Wouldn't mind something a little 'off the beaten track' though! Cream now. How's about some electric intercourse guys?

It's weird how Philip Seymour Hoffmans' dorky little brother is staying true to the Dr. Fink look when everybody else is just dressed in trad 80's gear.

I agree with myself there, but it was a strange thing to post. Must've got caught in the moment. A tribute-band moment, oddly.

Overall, I'd see them again. Good enough versions - all of Purple Rain plus other obvious ones - just a bit of fun. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Erm, them... that's what the whole thread's about!

Hang on, did the Oregon mention throw you? My meaning was that it's a great beer from Oregon, not that I'm actually IN Oregon! The Flying Saucer (here in H-town) have it on tap. biggrin

I own a couple of clubs in Little Rock, Arkansas. We had 1999 there last Wednesday Sept 8.

As a lifelong Prince fan, I thought the show was fine. Like many of you here, I've poured over every nuance of every song in their show for almost 30 years, so I'm probably way more harsh than the average person. The bottom line is, not everybody gets to hear a quite capable band play these songs live every night**, and you should definitely go check them out...unless real Prince is playing your town anytime soon.

That being said, almost every person in the crowd came up and told me how awesome the band was and to please bring them back soon.

The setlist was as follows:

- the purple rain album (they nailed the guitar solo on "Computer Blue")

- the hits from 1999

- 2 or 3 from D&P

- "I Wanna B UR Lover"

** Ironically, the house band at one of our clubs rocks some Prince stuff in a pretty amazing way. Someday I'll post up a link to what he is doing. I think y'all would dig it.
