And who's to blame for that?
Oh, so now he's a legacy act? Funny, according to most famz he's still way ahead of the pack, and his latest music is even better than his classics.
All of them playing and promoting their LATEST album.
Hilarious. His latest IS NOT in shops. Maybe they'll find another recent album, but all fo thsoe are quite shiot (hence Prince not playing those songs live). Hint: being a human jokebox playing 25+ year old songs will NOT get you new fans, all it will do is increase the sales of your greatest hits discs, and make WB a ton of money.
Like in Paris? Oh wait, no, oldies again. Monaco? Nope, oldies again. 21 Nights? Nope, oldies again. Etcetera etcetera.
You lot always come up with the lamest excuses, and they're always easily debunked.

"The reviewers: Prince is the master".:
http://kpn.dk/popmusik/ar...117442.ece

"Superior Purple Eminence" One of the biggest scoops was to successfully book Prince for this year’s festival [roskilde, Denmark]. Though the star has dwindled somewhat over the years, he is still one of the greatest, most unique and not to forget talented pop stars the world has yet seen.
While the sun set over Dyrskuepladsen the purple eminence took over the festivals biggest stage. He was fifteen minutes late, but all was soon forgotten, when he kicked the party into gear with “Let’s Go Crazy” and immediately followed with “Delirious” and “1999”. Nobody could have any doubts that Prince had arrived and had planned to serve the funky parade of hits that everyone had wished for.
Though he didn’t look like much on the stage [or “though he seemed very small on the stage”] his presence was enormous. Dressed in what looked like a spacey turtle neck with a drawing of himself, he showed us, that he is by no standard “over the hill”, but rather on the contrary is “still going strong” at 52 years. Superior dance moves, phenomenal guitar soli and incomparable funky falsetto were the keywords I this two hour long show. And when we at the same time were spoiled with near perfect sound quality, it wasn’t at all hard to let loose to “Kiss”, “Controversy” and one of this year’s most magical moments – an ocean of lighters and sing along as “purple Rain” played and the evening was drawn to its conclusion.
Prince’s performance was superior and not a finger could be put to it. But it was unfortunately not enough to make it an absolute success. If it were the sore feet, the sore vocal chords, the hang over’s or a little of everything, it seemed as if the audience sometimes couldn’t keep up with the energy and “go crazy”.
But Prince did what he should: Close [the festival] with magic, energy and hits, all of which could unite the audience and send them home with smiles on their lips and a grand experience richer.

Yeah, okay. Then he did it because everybody else always does it. And because he wasn't playing to fans.
(Orckham's razor is about plausability and trimming fat and not really about just reducing words in an argument just to make it more readable. You can put Orcham's razor to the relativity theory .. but it won't reduce it to "Because shit happens").

Sheesh, Even with the WYSIWYG editor people STILL can't be arsed to reply properly. Hence the shoddy result of this attempt. For fuck's sake, PRACTICE. Use the buttons.
Or you can not be paranoid and just DUSCUSS. But noooo, it's the "ooh I'm being attacked" bullcrap.
No, I'm pointing out that famz claim he's way ahead of the pack. Whereas in reality...
Do i call you a fam anywhere? No. So stop making up shit.
Note how you CONTRADICT YOURSELF: other bands play a MIX, but Prince cannot JUST play the new songs.
Average age of the songs played in Monaco: 25+ years. Translation: vast majority of songs played dated back to 1985 and before.
Really? No band ever played anything recent?
So when I essentially called Prince playing it safe and sticking to the old formular for festival set lists, like every other artist out there,

Imagine being paid millions to headline a festival and playing just a bunch of new stuff and then purple rain and kiss at the end
Jesus, people would go mad
It would be nice if he pulled out some of the lesser hits rather than Let's Go Crazy for the millionth time but it would also be nice if he wasn't a religious nut who won't play half his hits because he doesn't agree with their lyrics
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh get over yourself. You wanted me to answer for the fams, when saying "fams say something that disagrees with your statement". I'm not responsible for what others think.
You're a waste of time. You pick out things that collate with what you want to read, and ignore any context or intention.
And yes, you're rude and in attack mode and claim that I should read properly, when you fail to read proper yourself. You apparently think I'm somebody, who can answer for what fams think and you also expect me to be a replacement-Prince, who knows anything of his choises; and other than that, you can't see how things can be BOTH a "yes and no" in as much as something can be a mix of things. YOU are the one reading things into my text. A dog barking at anything that moves.
So here's the deal: I'll ignore you, and you'll ignore me .. we don't speak the same language at all. Yeah, sure, you'll want the last word .. whatever.

Okay, you're right. I was only trying to make the point that sometimes overanalyzing leeds to conclusions we have no way of checking. It might as well be not "because shit happens", but because he loves those songs these days and wants to play them live.
But hey, we have no way of knowing why, and those speculations made him sound very cynical, whereas the concert was actually for me and many others a great show. Also a great show of musicianship and groove.

Back on topic again - the concert itself:
Prince sure wasn't "playing it safe" yesterday. If he had been going for sucking up to the crowd, he wouldn't have let the bald singer sing a boring gospel, when everybody was there to hear him, not her. And he would have kept strictly to his own song catalogue.
Bottom line: He did it his own way, weren't pandering, but had the audience in his grip all the same. for

People come to large festival gigs to hear hits and sing-along. Same applied to most (though not all) concerts at the '02.' The rarer stuff was at the Aftershows where Prince knew the more 'hard-core' or 'conversant' listeners were in the audience.
As more loyal listeners we understandably want newer material and more fan-favourites ('The Love We Make', 'The Ladder', Anna Stesia', 'Joy in Repetition' etc) but most of the 60,000 - 70,000 audience would not know the songs. The show would be at a standstill. At the 'O2' hardly any of the bastards knew 'Shhhh.' With 'Lolita' and 'Black Sweat' they were totally lost.
At smaller venues Prince can play what he wants (i.e 'ONA'), in larger venues he simply has to play the hits.
Smaller gigs are good for hard-core fans but are likely not as lucrative. However, I'd happily pay £60 - £75 per ticket for a smaller gig and experience some gems. Conversely, I also like to see Prince in big venues from time-to-time.
Europe never got the 'O2' gigs so arguably, Prince is delivering a similar show to them now. At most 'O2' gigs we had 'Black Sweat', 'Lolita', 'Guitar', 'Satisfied' and 'Musicology' as the more recent songs played.

I get you - and I wasn't trying to be cynical, just saying how I've always heard the older acts on Roskilde do this (and I actually think it might be the smartest thing to do for such an act, since they're not playing for fans, but just casual music lovers).

True.
Here is another hypothesis: Prince is actually at the moment totally into his own 1999-sound, just listen to these samples from his upcoming 20TEN album!

from urban dictionary .... ride or die chick' refers to someone who (normally a girl, hence the word chick) is down for everything & anything. Basically down for both the bad and the good. the people in your life who are there through thick in thin. they'll do what it do to make it through with you. the ones that'll stick it through till the end
basically its a positive comment
