Me too. He signaled the band like he wanted to get some, but then played a VERY safe rhythm part. Stevie signaled to Prince to go ahead and hit it, but Prince layed back again. Odd.

His guitar riffs were great and very funky. It would be ease for him to do solos and shit but he was classy. I just didnt like the first fill in the beginning, he was kinda out but then ig turned out great.

I don't think so. I've seen Prince do this before at his own shows. Sometimes for whatever reason he can't figure out what he wants to do. Stevie was practically begging Prince to rock it out. Steve got so frustrated he started playing a part for Prince, like 'give me some of this'. I agree that P's rhythm part was funky, but out of place. He looked lost and scared. Oh well, at least he didn't fall off the stage. biggrin

I'm sorry but the only times i've seen Prince, not rock out and look lost / scared is when he should be, the first on stage with James Brown, Miles Davis and Stevie ....

If anyone on the org thinks it's that easy to go on stage and just start jamming with this lot, they should stick to U2 and Madonna songs and they don't know jack about music!

These guy's are icon's to Prince and so they should be ! cool

And you are getting so defensive because.....? Is Prince not a musical genius capable of going note for note with the GREATS? Yet, given the oppurtunity, he does not live up to those type of labels. I doubt any stage musician or performer would be intimidated by playing a few bars with Steve. I think most would jump at the chance. Especially one of Prince's experience. It's curious why sometimes he seems to have trouble playing spontaneously. I saw a bootleg from Bunker's in Minneapolis and I think he had the same trouble there. I wonder what the problem is.

Seemed to me that Prince was just trying to stay out of the way, comping waay in the back, not using his rock distortion tone . Maybe a respect thing, didn't want to steal the spotlight from Stevie?

Exactly, Prince seemed humble and respestful in not wanting to steal the limelight, coz he can so easily do sometimes!

Yeah right!

I think alot of people on here really don't get how much work the Greats, Prince, Stevie, James, MJ put into their stage act .... cool

A lot of musician in their head think there good and think they could just jump on stage and Jam with Stevie, but if that was the case we would be out watching them lol

It's not that easy, if it was ...everyone would do it!

That's right Prince can't really play well live unless he's practiced everything out in advance. Not exactly the stuff of legends is it? Hell any lead guitar player at your local bar can improvise some kind of solo on a Stevie Wonder funk tune. Surely Prince is capable of doing the same thing, right? Yet for some reason he really struggles. I've seen him do the same thing on his own songs.

prince starts on the keyboards but it is worth noting that he does not know how to play superstition .. part of the riff is there but the main melody that makes it superstition is not heard until stevie takes over and plays the more subtle notes .. while prince is playing rhythm guitar it is apparent he is lost .. he has found a couple of notes that work but not quite following any part of the song .. sounds like minor blues licks over a major key ... non obtrusive but definately not adding to or even working with the song .. there is no need for blues licks in between the horns .. then prince gets the spotlight .. the notion that he was laid back and not hogging the spotlight is silly .. stevie broke down the ENTIRE BAND to spotlight prince and prince really looks and plays like he choked .. stevie saves with his solo and then starts singing .. prince finally plays something worth listening to as stevie comes back in singing his first verse but as soon as the horns kick in prince is back to his minor based funk riff thing that sounds out of key .. i've done the same thing a few times .. jamming with people not quite knowing the key and trying to fake it enuf not to ruin the song .. u can see the uncomfortableness cross the face of both prince and stevie .. especially stevie u can see him trying so hard to figure out what the hell prince is doing ... you can see stevie listening really hard and his face squoncheds up like he is desparately hoping an interesting note is on its way .. the odd thing about music is that a blues based song, pretty much any blues based song is super easy to jam over .. u can play most any note in a certain minor scale and it sounds like gold .. a major key song with the kinds of progressions that only stevie can write takes learning and knowing before u can improvise over it .. as much as prince idolizes stevie .. and complains that stevie is better than beatles ... it is clear and surprising that he hadnt REALLY studied stevie that much and he definately did ZERO prep on this song ... as i stated in the mplsound thread .. prince moved from being at the top of his field in what he knew how to do but carried his ego over to other areas of music that he is quite amature at .. this is case and point of prince thinking he can do anything due to past successes and being majorly schooled in what he really needs to humble himself and learn as a musician .. this is what has been missing from his recent work ... growth

great so when prince moved into soul power ...what was that about then? lol

Yeah that's why he has maceo, larry and blackwell in his band.....because he's not humble?.... lol lol

This is why i love the org.... lol

If you look around there is another clip of Prince playing with Stevie at Madison Square Garden a few years ago.

I am sure is knows Superstition because he is playing on that clip just fine. Maybe he was trying to be humble, just function as a sideman, and not hog the spotlight. I am not surprised that you now got orgers attacking his musicianship it was going to happen eventually since despite all of the rantings over the last decade P is still touring and still putting out music. He just keeps going and it tears some of you up.

He did fine. What did you want him to do the splits up there? His playing augmented the song, didn't overshadow or hot dog it up there. Less is more.

I disagree. Prince's guitar playing was uncharacteristically relatively poor. "Superstition" isn't really a guitar track anyway but he could tried to sit in with the song more. D+
