Prince songs about his proteges, band members and supporting acts?

I've been reading conflicting info on the net about which of Prince's songs are about the various proteges and other peeps he worked with at 1 time or another. confused I was wondering if y'all could help me clear that up?

here's what I think I know so far (please correct me if I'm wrong):

songs about

Vanity:

17 days

Irresistible Bitch

Wonderful Ass

Pop Life (also about Morris Day and their cocaine addiction)

Susan Moonsie:

Raspberry Beret

When Doves Cry

Private Joy

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis:

Old Friends 4 Sale

Susannah Melvoin:

Nothing Compares 2 U

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Carmen Electra:

I Hate U

Jill Jones:

She's Always In My Hair

any others? thanks in advance biggrin

Interesting thread.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

an easy one here - mayte - the most beautiful girl in the world smile pretty sure it was about her

and also Billy Jack Bitch was written about reporter CJ but obviously not a protege etc.

i think that mani was the inspiration for the Rave track I love U, but i don't trust u anymore

i'd like to know who the inspiration was for Adore.

no more spring to mind right now

Let's see...

The only track I knoe for certain is about Susan Moonsie is When Doves Cry.

Susannah has a ton:

The Beautiful Ones

Condition of the Heart

-The entire The Family CD (except for Mutiny=Morris Day?)

New Position

Life Can Be So Nice

Anotherloverholenyohead

It

Forever In My Life

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Adore

When 2 R In Love

I think there's more but those are the ones off the top of my head.

As for Old Friends 4 Sale:

I always hear/read folks saying that the "two friends of mine got stuck in the snow" line refers to Jimmy and Terry and the missed show on the 1999 tour. I always thought it was a metaphor for cocaine as the following line says as much.

The two friends? Take your pick: Chick. Morris, Vanity, whoever.

blunt music She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies.... music blunt

I hear No More Candy for You was him dissing Candy Dulfer after she went off on him on her website.

In This Bed I Scream- Wendy, Lisa and Susannah

I also think that "Come Home" from Mavis' Time Waits for No One is about Susannah, it was written right around the time they split.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

a lot of songs from emancipation and after were written for,

or with mayte in mind. but i'm unable to tell wich ones those

are exactly, except for "she gave her angels" wich he said

in an interview was about her.

Correct nod so was "Billy's Sunglasses".

BTW, I think "Old Friends" also involves Big Chick because of the story he sold to the tabloid.

"Pink Cashmere" & "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" were about Annastesia.

1/2 of the songs from "Batman"(and its outtakes) were about Kim Basinger(although, she's not a protegee of his, neither was Big Chick).

If I'm not mistaken, it was Mayte not Mani(because he recorded the song at the time of their divorce), so was "Man O' War" nod

"She Loves Me 4 Me" was about Mani. And "Have A Heart" along with "U're Gonna C Me" from the ONA's piano set were about Mayte.

He's DEF not a protegee, but I have to bring this up.

I remember somebody saying that "The Everlasting Now" was about Sly Stone.

Now turn the page, at an early age
This brutha on stage, he was all the rage
He taught an integrated world 2 sing
The color u are don't mean a thing
Everybody's a star all the everyday people sang

He changed the funk, put it in a bag
Then he changed the colors of the flag
But u can't teach a dog new tricks if his tail don't wag
Don't know matter how much money u made
All the cars u got and all the women u laid
Mess with the flag and 2 them u're still a spade

Sorry for the off-topic but I had to bring it up and seek some info for those of you who are well informed about the subject. I didn't notice this untill very recently:

1. Sly's multi-racial band..

2. "Everybody Is A Star" & "Everyday People".

3. The "Riot" album cover reference.

He could be talking about himself in a sense too, but those 3 elements strongly bring Sly to mind.

Yep Billy's Sunglasses was about Billy Sparks

Old Friends 4 Sale was about Jimmy Jam, Big Chick, Wendy Melvoin(the new musician hired)

Pink Cashmere & Rave were about Ann Garcia aka Anna Fantastic (not Stesia) so was Vickie Waiting originally titled Anna Waiting

According to this thread, a lot of his songs were about her. I usta have a book about him (two, actually) and it mentioned something about him saying that he was engaged to her and that she was the one that he would "leave the industry for." i ,also, remember there being an interview at his house and she asked did he wanted her there? he said, no, just do what you always do.

Just how long were they together?

It's from 1982, so unlikely to be about Susannah.

Right, it might have been directed at their relationship by then, but I was trying to remember the original conception date of this song. Do you think the 1982 version was all lyrical? It could have been just music, Wendy & Lisa pulled this one out for him to rework and complete, I remeber about 70 something minutes into the Billy's Sunglasses they start the rhythm of Strange Relationship 1983

They met sometime in late 1982 early 1983, she finally broke things off late 86 early 87

Susannah is vocally back Prince on so many songs from the Dream Factory Camille Crystal Ball Sign o the Times Black album sessions as well

I'm not sure.

Seems all of Prince's relationships were pretty funky, it could be about anyone razz

You mean Mayte. Most of Rave was about her/their relationship.

I guess Mani inspired She Loves Me 4 Me, but that's just speculation.

i think i read in per nilson's book or hahn's book said it was about nona gaye, or a source like that. if that's the case then i think that's terribly sad as mayte was the one doing the dancing for it on totp and so on..
