I enjoyed all of the performances, but Alicia kicked a**! I love it when I feel the passion in an artist's performance and Alicia was bringin' it. Patti was in the Purple Zone in Patti LaBelle style. LOVED it when she kicked off her heels and so did Prince, it appeared. lol

I think Prince catching that shoe was the best thing that night lol Alicia was good, just didn't think a pregnant woman should be on a piano lol

I thought the Prince tribute was amazing! The girls really poured their hearts and souls into it. cool

As for Prince, he was obviously touched and very gracious in his speech, I felt.....and did I see him

actually holding back a few tears at times?

There were some of you that apparently felt he was apologizing for his past, but I didn't feel that at all.

I think he was looking back and seeing what many of us see in our own lives when we look back. Mistakes.....nothing unusual about that.

Everyone seems to have expected the performers in the tribute to match Prince note for note on the songs they sang. That's not the purpose of a tribute. They each got up there to pay homage to Prince not to do a kareoke session. Nobody will sing in the exact style of Prince on these tracks. Even Stevie Wonder's little take on 'Purple Rain' was different than Prince's vocal blueprint. Trey Songz shouldn't have tried to include himself in the tribute. His voice was horrible and the snippet of 'Purple Rain' he did was unbearable. The tribute as a whole served it's purpose to highlight Prince and to show that he is well respected in the musical community by various generations. From Patti Labelle who began her career long before Prince and to newer artists like Janelle Monae his influence is evident. His legacy is respected by many and equalled by none.

Best analysis I've seen of the tribute thus far. Fair and balanced.

Patti Labelle's set was terrible...She jus screamed her way through it.

And wearing a shirt with a picture of yourself on it is like congratulating your hand after a wank lol

BET passed Prince's lifetime achievement award again, yesterday. biggrin

Prince was so relaxed and at ease compared to MTV's 1999 MVA show (whereby Prince looked tense and by all means very uncomfotable). I think it was very sweet of Trey Songz to do a Purple Rain impromptu with such gusto. Ms. Monet, Esperanza, Alicia and Patti LaBelle infused Prince's songs with their own signature style. dancing jig Oh Stevie, what a witty and heartfelt speech to announce that Prince was being honored that night. sun There was Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle presenting the award to their friend, Prince. cool

I have not ever seen people express the level of admiration and love for Prince anywhere else on TV. And he was so humble when they were all standing as he began his speech (he asked them to sit down). touched I loved the message he gave to today's young musicians which went something like this: "...I was pretty wild back in my early days. You don't have to do what I did to get to the top....." heart

I enjoyed the rerun of this show better than the brief snippets that are available in BET's website. I was wondering how was it that Prince got a hold of one of Patti LaBelle's high heels. She tossed both of her shoes, and then, Prince picks one up and raises it like saying that her rendition of Purple Rain was very funky. biggrin
