soo who was the bald chick? Maybe I missed this thread somewhere, but isn't anybody curious about who the bald "black" chick was that Prince was at the BET Awards with? She sure looked at him with admiration...... |

Yep. She's a sweet gal, very good voice.
I find it funny that the OP had to put black in parentheses, as if it's a gimmick.

Has she been bald before, or is this a completely new look for her?
When I saw her last night, I couldn't help but wonder if that Androgy9 rumor has validity in some way or another and she shaved her head to go with that whole theme/image? If that speculation is totally dumb, please forgive me...I didn't follow the Androgy9 discussions very closely and I really don't know if it turned out to be a hoax or a joke or what.
So anyway, yeah, Shelby, bald. I think she looked pretty good! |

Right? Also...as if you need to call out her race. Because...ya know...there were so many bald women (of any ethnicity) there. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

It reminds me when people will tell a random story, and say something like "There's this black guy at work, and he...." Okay, does him being black have anything to do with the story? Or are you just making a point that he's not like you? |

I was wondering about that too Mama mia.
I was glad to see her there next to him. I was afraid she'd lost all his attention after Bria, but I guess I can still be hoping for that album... |

What album? Are you talking about Shelby J's album with Blackgypsy? "A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1
People can slam their door, disagree and fight it
But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son?
United States of Division"

Nah, there was a solo album in the making. But I don't know what's going on. I hope it gets released, eventually. |

Girl, you so sanctimonious. Sometimes a spade is a spade.
Now, if the guy is like "yadda yadda yadda... And he was BLACK! LOL!" then I'd raise an eyebrow. But anywho, the OP typing "black" cracked me up. Shelby is black as hell, I dunno what he's questioning about it. |

Are you referring to youtube shelbey? I thought she had done something to upset Princey since she hadn't posted a new video in a while, but she posted a new video after the tribute, talking about how much she loves Prince. She LOOOVVVESSS the dude. I still wonder what she meant with that egg comment. |

I think there's some psychology behind why people say "There's this black guy at work..."
Not saying it's right or wrong, but I think when someone is different (i.e., black) from the group which a person is in, people subconsciously like to differentiate them from their tribe to tell a story. In many cases, with white people, by adding some sauce to a story ("he's black") it makes the story even juicier. A black person to a group of white people adds some comic relief (and vice versa - a whitey to a black group.)
Not saying this is right or wrong, but this is my psychological interpretation.

You realize that the phrase "a spade is a spade" predates any derogatory term you're referring to, right?
Which is ironic in this context. |

LMAO, the bald "black" chick. Glad you put that in there or I would have confused her with all the bald "white" chicks in the audience.
On a serious note, I can't get with bald heads on women, no matter what their color. |

I'm a professional writer. So yes - I do understand that.
Sometimes, however (like in a thread that is specifically about a person to whom the derogatory phrase might be applied), it is better to choose another expression so there is no doubt as to your meaning.
That was my point. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

Let's not make the assumption that a person is racist, please. That kind of internet-borne accusatory tone is just really off-putting. I tie my own shoes in the morning and if I were so inclined to use racist terms, I'd use ones that weren't so interchangeable with common idioms. |
