Prince's best song is...

She's Always in My Hair.

Debate.

The extended version is the shit. Best? Not today. I'm leaning towards Little Red Corvette right now. Erotic City is up there as well.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

You have my heart, squirrel. I mean it. Truthfully. Erotic City has always been number 1 in this man's being. Little Red Corvette is beatific, as you and I know. And DMSR is funkcilic as well as as is Let's Work and you could even prop We Can Fun/ck in that extraordinary mix. Shall we add 17 Days, WDC and Jerk Out, as well? I think we can. The fact that you knowingly include the greatest musical genius that is EC makes my heart leap. The true fiber and timbre of my being rejoices at that very mention. We're soul mates at the mention. I have much love for you.

Yet, despite our understandings here, SHIMH raises the bar ever so slightly. Listen to it NOW.

Your mind may alter your decision.

I hate questions like "what's best?", "what's worst?" because we are all such different people- from different parts of the world, with different experiences and backgrounds.

Prince has way too many songs for there to be one "best".

A lot of people on here mistake their opinions as FACT. If they declare it "best", or "worst", so shall it be...

"She's Always in My Hair" evokes memories of an old bf who said Prince wrote the lyrics for us... lol

I like it, but I don't think it's his best.

My twocents

Your lies, they cut me.

I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

If we define "best" as one that most people in the general public would know, then I would say either Little Red Corvette or When Doves Cry. If we're talking "best" among those who have gone a little deeper into the library other than just what gets played on the radio, then hmmmmm, that's a tough one. It would be hard to limit to just one as the "best."

Debate.

When Doves Cry takes the cake, not because it's the most obvious choice, but because it's his best composed, arranged, and performed. To this day, there isn't anything that sounds like it. It carries this bizarre, smooth, glassy atmosphere since the bubblegum keyboards are there to accompany such a serious, mature overall sound. You're not quite sure how you're supposed to feel listening to it.

All the little intricate bits and pieces in the track; the main keyboard riff, the adroit guitarwork, the ethereal overdubbing, even the lack of a bassline, work together and gel seamlessly for a totally complete listening experience. It isn't an epic like 3 Chains 'o' Gold, nor a talent show like Computer Blue, it's just an endlessly enjoyable, accessible tune, no matter what instrument it's played on.

I love this song!

I think I've posted this before but here is a little background on the song.

According to my notes, it was recorded on Friday, December 30 1983 in Studio 3 at Sunset Sound. Prince was staying at the Le Parc Hotel in West Hollywood (which is where he wrote the lyrics earlier that week - BTW they are included on the UPTOWN 'Days of Wild' CD-Rom). His usual engineer, Peggy Mac, was on vacation and the session was run by Bill Jackson. The entire song was tracked on that day and even had a brief extra part that was never released. The mix of the song had a false ending similar to the 12" version, but then it came back up to hear a few notes. It was almost a tip of the hat to The fab four because the tune is very a very Beatle sounding tune.

Also, the original lyrics started with the phrase "A boy got killed at Disneyland today. Some say he was trying to be Superman." Now that would have been a different song.

Regarding Jill Jones' inspiration her comments to me were: "I think we were having an argument and I think Prince sometimes got confused with me. He wanted to do the right thing but a lot of times he just couldn’t. We were all just too young."

(based on information from an early draft of PRINCE: THE STUDIO SESSIONS)

I don't know if it is his best song but to complete the title of your post.... I would say this.

Prince's best song is... behind him. LOL
