I absolutely love it.

When I heard those horn arrangements for the first time in 1987 I couldn't believe my ears.

The lyrics, though, makes me think it'd be appropiate as a concert opener, but the groove indeed makes it an astounding closer.

It was my first favorite songs on SOTT. I like both versions, the one with and without the vocals. I do not favor the sped up version in the SOTT movie.

If you have those SOTT rehearsals you can hear that he started out doing the same version, then suddenly changed it to be faster. It sounds too manic as a faster version. The one on SOTT has a more defined groove.

Seriously, it's awesome. "Can't nobody...fuck with us..."

But the SOTT/Lovesexy band's version is a hundred times better than the Revolution's version. boxed

Well, I'm talking about the album version (the Revolution's) vs. the movie version. I much, much prefer the speeded-up one of the movie. I've always thought of this song as Prince's attempt to craft another "Baby I'm a Star"--a song that he could place right before the close of the set and just go on and on and on with as long as he wanted. I think in the 1990 Rolling Stone interview he talked about how the Revolution could just tear up "Baby I'm a Star" for days. But he probably got tired of it and wanted a new one to take its place. For me, I'd want to hear the movie version (and the SOTT tour versions) go on and on, but not the album version. But all that said, I really do like the album version. smile

There are a couple of boots of a Hit N Run show at Le Zenith in Paris, France, where they played this song; I think they played it the one time. The boot is basically the same song, but there are less horns, no singing vocals, and no Sheila E. rap over the phone. If you listen to the SOTT version, you can hear him keeping the audience going under all the overdubbed vocals, and horns. On the boot, you can hear that more clearly.

Yep ! I was there in 86 when they recorded it, it was more or less an instrumental with us singing : o e o oooooooooooo (well, kind of !). We, of course, didn't know that instrumental but it was funky !!!
