Judge a Prince song: Dreamer

Judge Deamer for yourself, how would you break it down?

1 Does the song meet the criteria of the theme?

(If not at all, disqualify)

1 2 3 4 5

2 Can the song be understood/enjoyed without knowing the

theme?

1 2 3 4 5

3 Can the song be related to without a particular context (i.e.,

not watching Buffy, playing EverQuest, seeing The Matrix,

etc.)?

1 2 3 4 5

4 Does the song engage the listener and/or have emotional

impact?

(1=Why am I listening to this? 5=I laughed/cried/shivered/

could see the scene described.)

1 2 3 4 5

5 Are the words well chosen and appropriate to the subject

conveyed? Are they evocative? Is the scansion good?

1 2 3 4 5

6 Does the melody suit the song and contribute towards its

impact?

1 2 3 4 5

7 Do you like the song?

1 2 3 4 5

8 Does the song have a breath of originality?

1 2 3 4 5

For an original song: Score lower if it is derivative of

someone else’s work, unless it is deliberately playing off of

someone’s work and putting a fresh spin on the idea.

For a parody: Score higher if the ideas and lyrics have a

unique twist, or if it makes use of the original lyrics but

twists them in an entertaining way.

AFTER the competition, in order of performance

9 Is the song memorable?

9a Lyrics: 1 2 3 4 5

9b Melody: 1 2 3 4 5

How can you even listen to it if you're thinking about all that? confuse

Rather than a mathematical score can I just say that Dreamer's one of my faves from recent times. Once those power chords come in I'm gone, and the solos - Princely fierce. cool

Oh I just wanted to give something like this a try, and we have all listenened to it enough to rate it based on the criteria above. I just thought it would be fun. Afterwards, we could take an average of all of the scores, and give it a real rating.

It gives us a hard, true score. We can all say... we like it, but how much? If you say, a lot, well a lot to you may have a totally different meaning to someone else. It's only here for those who are interested.

I can't grade the song like that. In my opinion, it's a song expressing how the individual feels about particular, existing social problems vs the same in the past. The individual pretty much makes it clear that he is not giving up hope that someday in the future, those particular social issues will be resolved, when specific mentalities change. The lyrics then pinpoints some conspiracy theories--distrust/suspicions of our government, and informs a sleeping society to stay awake and pay attention. I'd say the song pretty much lives up to its message. Just my two cents. Love the song and its message.

cool, I see you find areas 5 and 6 to be the strongest aspects of the song. You find it weakest in originality and its need for context. That's a pretty interesting mixture of likes and dislikes.

That's a whole lot of rigmarole to go through. I'm just going to say I really don't like the song. Hate it, in fact.

Perhaps someone would be nice and post the lyrics. You do the score...

I really like the comments that you made with your scores. From the looks of it you gave it a solid 48 out of 50 possible points. So the math begins to make some sense. Because style is the essentials of a song, style is nothing more than a collection of details that are inherit, whether placed there by unconcious acts or strict deliberate acts.

Your scores on the details show how strongly you like the song in all of the areas. Great!

Angelic1302 gave the song a 37, still a strong score.

37+48= 85

averaged between two orgers, that is a 42.5, which makes this a strong piece by those who care to take it down this path.

Terrific!

I am wondering if there are any people who dislike the song are willing to come on board and put some balance on it.

(I love your answer to question 3, very witty and insightful. wink )
