Was the title of 1999 meant to include astericks as shown on album artwork?

Any ideas regarding the **1999** as displayed on the album artwork -- and secondarily am I the only person that notices the artwork spells his name P-R-N-C-E with a crude "eye" superimposed over the letters?

I can imagine someone at Warner's saying, what the fuck's up with those astericks (stars) in the title? Just go with "1999" that skinny motherf*cker is nuts...

On my 1999 45, the name of the album is listed as "**1999**" with actual stars, so there you go.
Keep your headphones on.

Hey Ernest, any thoughts on the subject? Prince was using Jamie Star during that time period -- think the four stars were possible nods to that little known fact (at the time it wasn't widely known that he was the man behind the Time and Vanity 6 projects).

Hmmm, I'm not sure it's that deep. I think it's because the song is very futuristic in its narration and has stars on the cover. It's just art design, that's all.

Plus, visually, the title is really short. It doesn't stand out like "Around The World In A Day" or "Sign O The Times" would with more letters. So adding a couple of stars on either side kind of fills up some space in a pseudo-interesting way.

We could almost say that the imagery of Prince was/is haphazard or incidental, or we could take the view that he meant to communicate a message. I have spent years enjoying Prince's music and it is also good that we can talk about him. Not to get too deep, but imagine if all the world had left after the bombs drop was the iPhone of some sap like me, ha ha.

I better be careful one of them Mohamedans might take the wrong meaning of this post and behead my dumb ass!

Peace
