GEN X standup !

I was just thinking to myself how fantastic is was to grow up in the 80"S and having the great nusic of Prince,HipHop evolving in so many styles...Michael Jackson yes I said Michael,I remember video music box, AmericanBandstand,Soultrain and Saturdaymorning Cartoons when it was all so simple ! so I wanna hear from those who are almost touching 30 or who are already 30 how does it feel to turn the big 30.

You're right, the eighties was a wonderful time for music and to be young. I pity the ones that had to grow up in the nineties and after, With the exception of Prince, and a couple of others the music really sucked, and it hasn't improved.

Yep touching 30 and so glad I caught the tail end of Purple Rain and could enjoy Parade, sign o the times and Lovesexy.
At this time Prince, Micheal J and Madonna were the 3 suposedly big superstars and their chart music was good, well excluding jacko for me.Now chart music is terrible, people like J-Lo can top the charts in the UK anyway...people over here so want manufactured bands covering tracks...

30 is a great age. the 20s were a confusing time, full of crises and contradiction. 30+ is the age to be - i feel as if i'm finally coming into my own.

I disagree completely. Anytime I hear someone saying that a generation or a genre sucks completely, I think that they're not looking hard enough. The 90's were a heyday for wonderful music. Don't get me started on a list.

I can't remember where I bought them all. But I can remember the order that I bought all the old ones. It was 1990 and it went a lil somethin' like this.

1. Lovesexy
2. Batman
3. Graffiti Bridge
4. 1999
5. Purple Rain
6. Around the World in a Day
7. Black Album (bootleg)
8. Sign "O" the Times
9. Controversy
10. Dirty Mind
11. Parade
12. Prince
13. then I got Diamonds and Pearls the day it came out and I was an "up to date" fan by then. This would make a good thread topic, btw.

I am from the 80s as well. For me the best musical moments were from 84 to 87. Check out the VH1 special on 1984. It is argued that 1984 is one of the greatest in musical history.

Now that I am over thirty and have money, I am collecting things that I had as a kid. I have spent a lot of money buying old video games and music.

My basement is like a 80s museum.

Can I come over!?

And I agree with you, 84-87 were excellent years musically. 84 would have been a good musical year even without Prince but thanks to PR 84 was a phenominal year of music.

MBV's "Isnt Anything" was 88. Though "Loveless" was technically released in 91, thats only because they took forever to mix it. I think it was recorded in late 89 early 90. Anyhow, a majority of the bands existence was in the 80s. I'm just being anal. LOL.

don't forget A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" great album! 93 i believe.

The 80's in general were a great time for music.

Strangely, Prince, MJ, and Madonna were all born in the same year and all 3 really hit it big at the same time in 84.

Some of the coolest music videos came out of the 80s. They were alot more creative and fun than the glossed up, digitally retouched, MTV spring break supermodel videos that we're stuck with now. Remember Duran Duran on a boat with floursecent cocktails? The strange glowing doorways and dark figures in the Quarterflash video? Thriller? Cheesey but oh so cool computer graphics, Mickey, Wierd Al,Ugly kid joe with the inflatable blow up doll...just fun stuff.

Yeah, I think the eighties were the best time in pop culture, the music, the movies, (maybe not the fashion).
I had a blast in the eighties, to me it was the best time to grow up.
The 90s had its moments nand I don't know what's goin' on now, I feel sorry for all the kids who have to grow up now, to me with a few exceptions the music & movies suck right now.

the younger kids are really diggin the 80's fashion. but it think the problem is, stuff you wear as a teenager you will never wear again. that goes for every generation. i love 70's clothes, for instance, 'cuz i was just a little kiddo back then. i remember liking this or that style that i was too young to wear.
