I'll be honest: it irks the piss out of me when he says "Maceo, blow your horn." Probably because every time I hear Maceo I really, really wish I was hearing Eric Leeds instead.

I agree with that, but my reason is because I only like hearing the original person who started that line say it (James Brown). lol

what's wrong with "on the one"?

he's just giving the band some instructions. you know he just goes
wherever he wants on stage and stretches songs out on the spot, so
the band has to have some clue as to when to break it down or when
renato or someone can take an extra solo.

I think the OP kinda misses the point (for me)...

You know, when he says "on the one" or "gimme 2 y'all", and then you get that BAM-BAM... Now THAT'S exactly what makes a live show worth spending money on.

nod Yeah, it's a necessary part of the show, and I like to hear/see the interplay between Prince and the band.

It annoys the hell out of me when he stops songs three times in a row because of sound issues. Then when he spends the entire show yelling at the sound guy instead of singing his songs that is a little annoying too...

That, and continually asking for the lights to be turned on or off wrecks the flow of the performance.

Yeah....like "on the 1" is just something "cool" to say??!! eek Its a musical direction, telling the band on which part of the beat they should stop.

If Prince giving his musicians instructions on stage annoys you.....you're in the wrong place!

Exactly! i swear some folks are so moronic and generally stupid. i'm puzzled how their brains can spare enough power for them to hit those keys.

stupid edit. lol

Yeah, his diva antics really messed up a lot of the 10/24 gig for me. I know a lot of people will get upset with me for saying this but that performance was kind of a disappointment.

I've been to several of Prince's concerts, and the only time he disappointed me was during one of the Musicology tours, it might have been Atlanta, I don't remember. Anyway, it was when he had dancers come up on the stage and one quite older woman was on stage doing her thing and when it was over, Prince sang out, "Will somebody come up here and get they grandmama, please?" I felt bad for the lady because she looked a little embarrassed. I just thought that was wrong. Hell, no matter how old she was, she honored him by paying her money for a ticket and he dissed her!

I hate it when he changes the lyrics to song in concert, just ain't the same. Not only that, it sounds crap when you got 20,000 people singing the wrong words.

What are we bitching about now? Seriously, so you are at a Prince show. He says, "On the one." And if we look at you, we would see an annoyed exasperated look on your face? Wow. Way to wreck the mood. smile

It aint that serious. Cut the self-righteous crap. This is just a thread I started because I was curious about what other things Prince says in concert more often than not. Is that better?

That's what I'm wondering too. I've seen Prince in concert multiple times, and have never seen this happen. Guess I'm lucky. I don't think watching Prince hollering at his sound guy for screwing up would be a fun thing to witness. omg

I'm sure Prince did that in a joking manner. I don't think he did it with the intention of embarrassing anybody. wink Prince does have a funny sense of humor at times. lol

Edited to say that during a concert at one of the Celebrations in Minneapolis, Prince called a man onstage to dance. Prince asked the man his name, and the man said his name was, "Tuna". Prince said in response something to the effect of, "Better make it funky Tuna, or we'll put you back in the can". lol lol Guess I'm used to Prince's dry sense of humor, because it doesn't bother me much. giggle

For me it's not any particular words said, but rather, a riff he has the band play. The string riff from the third verse of 'Take Me With U' (you know the one: "deedle-eedle eet deet DEE!"), that he now has the band play every four goddamn bars of that goddamn song! It's like a mosquito in my ear!

I though it was stupid when he said that Abe Lincoln had nothing to do with the end of slavery in the United States. It is factually inaccurate. The 13th amendment only passed because Lincoln promised jobs to a lot of people. Prince is very gifted musically, but he is occasionally lacking academically.

Sorry, that was an exaggeration. What happened on 10/24 was, he stopped mid-song several times throughout the show to get the sound changed. And even mid-song he would be giving commands to the sound guy and lighting crew. It was effed.

On the Jam of the Year tour at the Lexington, KY show, he all but screamed at the sound guy during the build-up to "Face Down." Along with all the things he was usually saying before the song ("no slaves in this building," "is this an 18 & over affair," etc.), he went into some bizarre speech about the universe and a bunch lot of other things and then lashed out at the sound guy about...something. Most of the rant was inaudible; I think his bass and/or mic wasn't loud enough. He was clearly angry but it was quite fascinating. smile

I've never been able to find a tape of that show but have always wanted to hear it again.
