He very well may be... or for that matter YOU might be a prophet. My personal take on issues like this is it is a matter that TIME will determine. We don't actually write history. Neither of us met these heroic figures in our pasts we have been told about them. History informs us that Moses authored the Pentatauch, that Abraham found favor with God, that Jesus led a group of followers through the hillsides of Judea -- we don't have any direct way of identifying these individuals, however.

So I could imagine a future absolutely where those peoples holy works consisted of the works of Prince; perhaps he is the person who authored the "Songs of Solomon," right?! So enjoy your insights and bask in the glory of being the Chosen One.

Jesus came to earth and brought all walks of life together bringing the sick the opressed, lepars back to community...Prince has brought many people together that normally would not mix in society...which explains the amount of animosity on this site.

I am posing a question. A Prophet is a real person, Jesus was a prophet, Moses was a Prophet. Is Prince a Prophet? simple question.
You ask a cogent question. Your question is fine. Don't let the mockers bother you. They will laugh at anything heartfelt. I don't know if he is a prophet or not. My guess he is not in the original sense. But some of his songs are certainly modern day psalms. For me, he is definitely on to something. I am not sure exactly what, but he is definitely on to something. Remember the white horse he rode many, many years ago? And his Rainbow period is eerily reminiscent Joseph's coat of many colours (i.e. Joseph was a bridge between all races. A type of Graffiti Bridge, which is why his brothers wanted to do away with him).

And if anyone disputes modern day songs being modern day psalms well, what did Coolio start his Gangsta's Paradise with? And if anyone disputes me, before they jump to conclusions, I am not religious. I am agnostic. Like Manuel, I know nothing.

I think you're onto something here. Moses parted the Red Sea. Prince parted the red v (assuming Sheena Easton is a natural redhead).
Your humour, squirrel (not hedgehog?) is not bad, but your intention is soulless.

What are you smoking? Magical powers? What magical powers?

Besides, all he does nowadays is sing about how great he is. Aren't prophets supposed to talk about other people once in a while?
Arrogance is alright, especially if it is earned. And to me, Prince has earned it. Besides, have you not heard the song? It has been written, have you not heard? The song by Black Grape (featuring Sean Ryder of the Happy Mondays and Kermit). Have you not heard their song? It's called Reverend Black Grape. Have you not heard one or two of the lines of that song:

"Come all ye faithful. Joyful and triumphant. Gather around, while I BLOW MY OWN TRUMPET".

I guess no. Lol.

Nice one, Nelson. Leonard Cohen (The Guv'nor) also wrote a song about the same time, called The Future. He also sings, "I've seen the future..." I'll leave you to check out the rest. But remember, Prince highly respected Joni Mitchell, who was very close to Mr Cohen at one stage. Both Canadian, both met up in the USA. Leonard Cohen made Joni Mitchell realise that she was not really a folk singer, thus: he said to her, "why are you wearing rags when you want to wear a ballgown?".

She wrote The Boho Dance about this. About herself, Joni wrote: "And any eye for detail caught a little lace along the seams." Even though her jeans were scuffled (even though she was playing at being bohemian), she also wore lace.

We need an eye for detail with Prince. The four majors seem to be Cohen, Mitchell, Prince and Morrissey. Prince may be No 1, but Cohen is the guv'nor. IMHO, of course.

prophesy is not that big of a deal

it's been made out to be some spooky extra special drama magic

everyone has a direct hotline to 'all-seeing all-knowing' consciousness

it's our natural state

but it gets dumbed out of us because of so many things

Prince has definitely been a prophet at different times in his career

but it doesn't make him any better than anyone else

he just stilled himself and listened when others were busy making noise

Yes prince might B a prophet,

Remember " Osama get ready to bomb 2001" that got a lot of people wondering.

In 1999 he said something like "You never know with Michael, lets make a home for him"

an other one: "If Jesus was standing right in front of us , we wouldn't even recognize him"

The final one, in 93 on the Tavis interview he used the words BAM and This is it...

So just wait and see what the future brings us it's easter after all.....

I disagree, the animosity on this site is about people taking the music to heart more so then most and more seriously then most. It's just music, isn't it?

Tremolina

This is quite an interesting thread.

So far people have mentioned that Prince writes and sings a lot about God and (divine) love. But so have many other writers and singers. Does that make anybody who does a "prophet"?

Others mentioned the "Osama Bin Laden is getting ready to bomb. America you better watch out" line he used during a 1998 aftershow in Utrecht, Holland, on the music that was also used for the 2001 space odyssey movie. While odd, it was not a "prophecy", because in 1998 OBL declared war on the US, threatening to bomb the American homeland. Most Americans were oblivious about that. Prince simply paid attention and warned about it.

Then I saw somebody mentioning the song "The Future", but seriously, there is no prophecy in singing "I've seen the future and it will be. I have seen the future and it works. And if there is life after we will see, so I can't go like a jerk."

1999? Not prophetic either. In fact, it's more a song that's about partying against the end of the world prophecies, than one subscribing to any of them.

"Welcome 2 the Dawn" perhabs then? I saw that song mentioned as well, but nope, that is not a "prophetic" song either. Prince's lyrics and symbolism shouldn't be taken out of context. "The Dawn" is not some apocalyptic or mystic world changing event, comparable to the second coming. "The Dawn" is simply a metaphor for experiencing the Divine. An experience most people only have, once they have reached the lowest of the lowest points in their life. "When the Light of God is the only thing in life that will redeem. Welcome 2 the Dawn." Prince had this profound experience at one point in his life and he wanted to share it the way he shares his experiences. The way he does that best. Perhabs the only way he really knows how. With a song.

Same with "New World" and "The War". All knowledge and/or experience of what is known or said already, that he mixes with (biblical) metaphor and philosophical/moral questions. Prince likes to make his listeners feel, but also to think and be moralistic, use the bible, new age stuff, nods to hinduism, budhism, philosophical ramblings, all that. But he also works with and reads a lot about new technological developments, politics, entertainment and show business.

That's who he is and therefore that is the context in which to put his songs. They are not truly about a "war" or a truly "new" world. That's just metaphor, in these cases referring to the rapid advancement of modern day technology, like chip technology and the online world, the internet.

Anybody that paid any attention to these developments in those days (the mid to late 90's). Anybody that read a lot of papers, magazines and well informed bloggers and internet sites, like Prince, was very well aware about the potentials of these new technologies. "Prophecies" were made by many people back then about everybody possibly being chipped so the government can control us 24/7 or that the internet and other technologies would change the entire world, bringing us all closer together, but also making us far less safe and secure.

Prince is not a prophet, but he is an incredibly talented song writer and musician, very intelligent, sensitive, curious, and aware of details and complexity. Plus he loves God. Very much. He obviously prays and meditates a lot, has gone through very deep depressions and came out of them again. And he obviously thanks God for that by wanting to share some of his love for and trust in God with the rest of the world. As thanks. Not as prophecy.

Having said all that, sometimes it seems Prince sees himself as something higher or better than others. Like when he preaches on stage and makes others feel bad about their convictions or their lifestyle, or when he writes angry songs about his fans.
