Prince Still Has It!

Thought I would make a single disc from the last couple of releases and I am astounded by the end result. I think the purple party is over for you if you are not feeling most of these tracks. I believe this ranks up there with the best work of his career. After 400 or so released tracks it is hard as a listener to find something that sounds fresh and interesting. This music hits the nail square on the head! Thank you Prince!!

Here is the track list. Please let me know your thoughts.

Boom
Crimson and Clover
4ever
The One U Wanna C
Colonized Mind
77 Beverly Park
Wall of Berlin
$
Ol' Skool Company
Chelsea Rodgers

That's easy for you to say.

As for the topic, it's like the old single disc Emancipation discussion again. I agree with the thread title and discussion point but your list and mine would be different. I can't stand Chelsea Rodgers and 77 Beverley Park is boring to me. Dreamer and Guitar would easily take their place on my compilation. I'd also be including No More Candy, Dance 4 Me and Valentina too. I'd also stick FUNK and Cause & Effect in the mix somewhere too.

Whatever the list, like you say, if you can't make yourself a killer single disc out of the last few releases, it really is time to give up listening to new releases. We ain't getting another 1999.

Of course he still 'has it'.

There have been some great recent songs. Many are perhaps over-looked but that's just the way it is I guess.

If they had been released in the '80's or by any other Artist people would be dribbling over them.

I have a slight problem with some of the lyrics on certain songs lately ('Valentina'; the rhyming of 'hall' with 'call' for example' but

'Dreamer'
Colonized Mind'
'Crimson and Clover'
'Better with Time'
'Somewhere Here on Earth'
'Lion of Judah'
'The Dance'
'Reflection'
and 'A Million Days'

are among my favourite Prince songs.

I truly agree with the overlooked part and the if they had been released in the '80s assessment. Ironically, I think his most harsh critics are the mob on here who seem to hate EVERYTHING he's released in the last 10 to 15 years. However, I am very impressed with his musical progression, and there are tracks from the last decade and a half that I disklike, but many more that I like as well as those that I love. To me, the ones that I love will give anything that he released in his heyday a run for it's money. Some of my favorites from the last 5 albums are:

The Rainbow Children
The Sensual Everafter
Muse 2 the Pharoah
Everywhere
Last December
1+1+1 is 3
A Million Days
Call My Name
The Marrying Kind
What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
Reflection
3121
Black Sweat
The Word
The Dance (3121 version)
Planet Earth
Somewhere Here on Earth
Future Baby Mama
Chelsea Rodgers
Colonized Mind
Dreamer
Back to the Lotus
From the Lotus
Dance 4 Me
U're Gonna C Me (MPLSound version)
Better with Time

These are my favorites, but there are others that I really enjoy such as "Love Like Jazz," "If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life," "Mellow," "The One U Wanna C," "Family Name," "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed," and "Boom" among others. I also agree with you about some songs like "Valentina." I really like the "song" musicially, but the lyrics annoy me, or on some others there are "musical parts/changes" that turn me off.

Regardless, just looking at some of the songs listed on this thread reaffirms to me why all the "Prince is washed up," "Prince needs to hang it up," "Let's toast how good Prince used to be" threads are such rubbish. Everyone likes what they like, but to say that the guy is still not making quality music is ludicrous. Just say you don't dig it.

And you know the thing is, I don't want one. I agree with all that you said. I really think it's time for some of the people around here to stop listening to new Prince releases because he's obviously moved on to a place where they are not interested in visting, which is fine. Just listen to the old stuff and quit complaining because he isn't making the music you want. Because, as you said, if you can't make a "killer" compilation from the last few albums, the proverbial thrill is gone. On the Cause and Effect thread yesterday several posters said Prince hadn't made a decent song in the last 10 years. eek Yeah, if that's the way you feel about it, it's really time to heed his advice at "Letitgo" because that statement is ludicrous to me.

I also agree with you that what one Prince fan likes can be vastly different from what another one likes. For example, I'm not feeling Cause and Effect, and Guitar was just ok to me. I am sure there are songs on my list that don't move you. However, at the end of the day, we each have NEW Prince material that we dig. It was much like that back in the day for me. Some of the songs that were wildly popular like "Raspberry Beret" were just ok to me, and nothing that I would listen to on my own. That's part of what makes him so great to me - his far reaching appeal.

Edit - I wanted to add that you make a good point about the "Emancipation one disc discussions. Of course, had WB been able to put that album together, it would have been one disc that was like an "Emancipation" Greates Hits." However, I am sure there are songs that some people love that would have never seen the light of day. When I listen to songs like "Donna" I scratch my head as to how they never made it to an official release. Listening to "The Work" reveals that Prince has always written and recorded songs that ran the gamut from B-sides to masterpieces. However, the difference back then was that WB was weeding through his output to put together "hit" albums. Now he doesn't have that filter. So we get a lot more to sift through to make our own "hit" compilations. If he was like some of these other artists who take years to release albums, then have record execs piece together the most marketable product, I am sure his post WB releases would be more cohesive and accesible, but to me they wouldn't be as interesting. For example, I've never cared for either incarnation of "Feel Better . . .," but I'm glad it's there.

My mind hasn't been blown by Prince music in almost 10 years but I do find at least a track on every release that I dig. It is what keeps me listening after all this time and all the Princely shenanigans.

if I had to do an albums of songs in the last 10 years:

1+1+1=3
The Everlasting Now
Family Name
Everywhere
The Dance
The Word
The Marrying Kind
Dreamer
Here
No More Candy
