Cause and Effect Part II

The other thread is still open for continuing conversations, but it is getting slow.

Here's a new one so you have a choice to start new topics or go to part I and continue.

[Full version here: http://minnesota.publicra...fect.shtml - Mars23]

or listen right here

[Track is now up on lotusflow3r.com as well]

Unconfirmed lyrics courtesy of orger; IstenSzek:

"cause and effect"

i am here. where are you?
ladies and gentlemen.....

cause and effect
hey, hey, hey

if had the chance to do it all again
i wouldn't change a thing, except my next of kin
there's something on the tip of my tongue
-got a taste for sin
if you stamp your passport full of regret
you have nothing to remember but a lot to forget
leave no enemies, leave no debt

made in the image of God's intellect <--Lyrics out for debate
to no other man am i to subject
i am what i am because & effect
cause & effect
hey, hey, hey

If i could talk to myself back then right now
i'd say 'son you might wanna, stick around
something amazing is about to go down'
if i could leave myself just 1 little note
one that husbands and fathers wrote
it say 'you need to be a superstar or grow up,
but not both'

made in the image of God's intellect
to no other man am i to subject
i am what i am because & effect
cause & effect
hey, hey, he

cause and effect
ladies and gentlemen
rock/roll rock/roll

i am here. where are you?
ooooh oooh. haha. hey eh heh oh hoh

don't let them say your paper's worth more than gold
i see a generation lay down before they get old
and getting endlessly sold
you need compassion for one another
righter than wrong
that's what needs to be at the heart of every past
and future soul song

made in the image of God's intellect
to no other man am i to subject
i am what i am because & effect
cause & effect
hey, hey, he

look at y'all. brains splattered
all over...moneyapolis

ladies and gentlemen
rock/roll rock/roll

Rockability

Glad I came in late after all the fanaticism has died off.

Its right up there with "lolita," but not quite as good. Lolita had a decent chorus (as you know, that's my complaint other than the fact that the chorus is also quite sloppy with poorly chosen vocal clustering).

You nonmusicians are probably like "fuck you," but its true. P needs to just give up and start over with a garage band. anyone know if the brotha has a garage and a couple amps sitting around? Maybe he knows some folks who play in a band?

NONSENSE

I like the song. I like the drums and it sounds like there's an accoustic guitar on it. cool

I desperatly need to hear an inspired Prince song with interesting beats again, something sounding fresh and new.....

this song is too bombastic.. the sound/ production is not that original.

It reminds me of Strays Of The World, but not in a good way.

Where is the good catchy pop song, or the funk with a fat rich sound??

Prince is 51, I know the 1980's are long gone, but so is Prince's originality.

I hate myself for writing negative things about that genius, Prince. BUT I can't help it, this song sucks. sad

I'd like nothing more than to be able to come on here today and state that I love this track and that it has made me sit up and take notice. Unfortuantely I can't.

It's ok. The melody seems pretty weak. Can't remember who said it in another post but the poinbt they made was that the track seems to comprise of 3 different 'ideas' to tracks - all quite different and in 'the development stage.' I mean, it's like there's elements of some promising ideas, but as a whole IMO all together they don't gel.

It's not memorable - almost like Cause and Effect is a 'musical trailer'/ advert and contains elements of several tracks to come.

i dunno, i'm rambling. Little disappointed. Perhaps this is a teaser filler track to a new project. I liked most of Lotusflower but, for me, this is a step backwards quality wise. confused

I first thought the song sounded really interesting and heavy. Pure Prince-ish rock and roll.

Second time I pressed play I forgot about the song while reading through the posts. That's not a good sign.

I think he did a fantastic job on Colonized Mind and Dreamer so it's not like he's lost the potential to create great rock. If, then that happened the past year...

Now, something he hasn't done in years is sexy music with SOUL. Future Baby Mama, SHOE and Elixer were kind of close. But it would be nice to hear him do something closer to Maxwell or Jesse Johnson's new stuff. Some funky urban soul.

...I would probably be over the moon if it were Princey that did Thicke's Sex Therapy...

Well I'm still disaponited with this song... It seems like he just trowed 2gether alot of stuff and it sounds like a f*kin mess! HE IS ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE ARTISTS OUT THERE AND THIS! IS WHAT HE CAME UP WITH? Last year whe I heard 4 songs from the upcoming Lotusflow3r I was happy with what I heard. But now we might get another boring album like Musicology. NICE!!

He could probably turn that song out, but Robin has that "Fuck Me" look in his eyes, that I haven't seen in Prince in years!

Ok, just listened for the first time along with three casual fans. I had a gut feel Prince was going to prove everyone wrong and come up with a classic...

There was a general consensus.....

Good = Guitar work.

Bad = everything else. Tired sound, weak drums and bass, same dated production sounds as the last 10 year, Larry Graham fever all over again.

I really thought that MY Prince was going to prove everyone wrong today and come out with something new and fresh. Instead, he sounds more in a rut than ever before. I think I need to take a reality check and accept that all idols eventually lose their edge.

Here's another thought: when he was younger, it was easy for him to write about the kind of things that younger people relate to. What does a 50-year-old man write about that doesn't get him clowned? How does he write about the fact that, about two hours into a show, he starts limping noticeably? About the fact that he wears a big gold necklace because he doesn't feel like dyeing his chest hair? That if he goes after a younger woman, he's pretty much in dirty old man territory? Or if he desires an older woman, he's lost his mojo? If he writes a political song, one group of people gets offended. If he writes a religious song, another group of people gets offended.

I think, on some level, we're looking to Prince to make us feel young again. How in the name of heaven is he supposed to do that?"

- Those R all better, much more interesting topics than he is currently writing about/ drawing inspiration from. If he could dig deep inside himself and address these topics I bet we would get a much more rewarding heartfelt experience.
No one can relate to the things he sings about now.
C'mon Prince dig deep, eye no its in U.

Klyph

Someone said in another thread/post that Prince could never again release an album/song that would please most of his fanbase. I agree, but I also have to disagree. I realized a while back that most of us who are displeased with the majority of his current output have similiar complaints: the lack of inspiration/creativity and a complete void of catchy melody and great lyrics combined with the asthetics of a born-again minister in his new material. I truly believe that if a song that was the complete opposite of that emerged, the so-called "negative" voices would mostly unanimously like it. And the rest of you sheep would LOVE it because, well, that's what sheep do.

Could he do it? Yep. Will he do it? Hell-to-the-FUCK noooo!

And one other thing. The whole "Bad Prince songs are still better than most of what's out there" theory is so old and tired. I can name alot of current artists whose work put P's to shame, some who have been doing this for a long time. Porcupine Tree comes to mind (and, fyi, Steven Wilson (as PT and solo) has done several covers of Prince tunes ).
