Batman era 1989 An interesting era, sorta connected with Lovesexy, good number of songs most likely recorded during that time period. the feel of the Line & the Future seems like they were recorded back 2 back. I like the time...
Released June 20, 1989 Recorded June 1988–March 1989 Paisley Park Studios Side One The Future – 4:07 Electric Chair – 4:08 The Arms of Orion (Prince, Sheena Easton) – 5:02 Partyman – 3:11 Vicki Waiting" – 4:52 Side Two Trust – 4:24 Lemon Crush – 4:15 Scandalous (Prince, John L. Nelson) – 6:15 Batdance – 6:13 Bsides: I Love U In Me 200 Balloons Sex Feel U Up Outtakes: Dance With the Devil R U Legal Yet? (Is this from the Batman sessions?) Eric Leeds - horns Atlanta Bliss - horns Sheena Easton - vocals on "The Arms of Orion" The Sounds of Blackness - choir The Clare Fischer Orchestra All choir, horn and orchestra parts were sampled and re-arranged by Prince Special guest presence by: Jack Nicholson (The Joker), Michael Keaton (Batman) and Kim Basinger (Vicky Vale) on "The Future", "Vicki Waiting", "Partyman" and "Batdance". Robert Wuhl guest presence (uncredited) on "Trust" Recorded and Mixed by Chuck Zwicky, Eddie Miller and Femi Jiya, assisted by David Freidlander and Heidi Hanschu chapter 11 Fantastic p 156 At first, though, it seemed Prince had made a shrewd decision by tapping a Hollywood insider as his manager. Shortly after assuming his new job, Magnoli was contracted by the acclaimed director Tim Burton, who was shooting the movie Batman with Jack Nicholson in the role of the Joker. While assembling a rough cut, Nicholson and Burton placed two Prince songs -1999 & Baby, I'm A Star- into scenes as background music. Pleased wih the effect, they hatched the idea of asking Prince for new material to add to the film's soundtrack. Prince flew with Magnoli to the movie's production site in London in January 1989 and was mesmerized by Burton's elaborate and haunting vision of Gotham City, Burton requested just two songs, since the composer Danny Elfman had been hired for the soundtrack. But Prince, suddenly inspired about the project, offered an entire album. Warner Bros. Pictures, emboldened by wild audience response to early trailers for Batman, decided that the film could sustain two soundtrack records-one a traditional score by Elfman and the other a collection of Prince songs. -Possessed Immediately after wrapping up the Lovesexy tour, Prince returned to Paisley Park adn set to work on Batman. Becoming fascinated with the characters(and especially the Joker), he sampled portions of the dialogue and synced his songs directly to scenes. Prince seemed convinced that his contributions would permeate the entire film. "This is going to be my movie!" he exclaimed to studio engineer Femi Jiya. Prince created the whole album virtually on his own, a rare exception being a visit from Sheena Easton, who dueted on the ballad "The Arms of Orion." But for the most part, his labors were marked more by haste than by inspiration; on many of the songs, he quickly programmed drumbeats and then layered instruments with little attention to structure or melody. Some previously recorded numbers were revamped to fit the movie, such as "Anna Waiting" (about Anna Garcia), which morphed into Vicki Waiting after the character Vicki Vale. -Possessed [Edited 2/16/10 11:55am] [Edited 2/17/10 5:46am] [Edited 2/17/10 17:02pm]

CHORUS Scandalous Marvelous © 1989 Controversy Music - ASCAP Scandalous!" is a smooth, romantic ballad by Prince, released as a single from his 1989 album, the soundtrack to Batman. The song continues a long tradition of Prince's sexually charged ballads, with gasped, passionate vocals on lyrics such as "I can't wait till I can wrap my legs all around U." The track features a drum machine and synthesizers, which sample Clare Fischer's orchestra. The music is attributed to Prince and his father, John L. Nelson. The Scandalous Sex Suite, released three days later, transforms the song into a three-part suite. "The Crime" is a seductive conversation between Prince and Kim Basinger with various lyrics from the song interspersed. "The Passion" features the main song with new lyrics sung over the original lyrics. "The Rapture" includes a long guitar solo before finishing up the conversation from part one. The B-side, "Sex", is a minimalist funk number featuring mainly a drum machine loop, a repeated synth hook, and bass guitar. The song lyrics state that safe sex is preferable, and sex with multiple partners can lead to death. The song was co-written with bassist Levi Seacer, Jr. The 7" single received the Lovesexy song, "When 2 R In Love" as its B-side; the song was also included on The Scandalous Sex Suite. "Scandalous!" replaced "Still Would Stand All Time" as Batman's main ballad and love theme. The discarded song would later end up on Graffiti Bridge. Composer Danny Elfman adapted parts of "Scandalous!" into his Batman film score, where it served as a love theme. "Scandalous!" reached No. 5 on the U.S Black Singles chart, but didn't touch the US Hot 100. "Scandalous!" was Prince's final single released in the 1980s. Due to licensing issues with the Batman franchise, Prince was not allowed to include songs from this album on any compilations. Even on concert T-shirts listing Prince's albums, the Batman title was replaced by the song "Scandalous!". [Edited 2/16/10 12:20pm]

Me too! It was a perfect storm for an 11 year-old - Batman movie, cool soundtrack (Batdance was everywhere) - I had to beg my mom to let me get the tape. My first (and sentimental favorite) Prince record. I used to be so jealous because my friend had the single for Batdance and it had "200 Balloons" on the b-side! That bastard!

The song became the only Batman single to perform better in the UK charts, where it peaked at number 14, as opposed to the U.S. (where it peaked at number 18). The upbeat and humorous number features horn samples and Prince's sped-up "Camille" vocals, as well as a vocal performance by Anna Fantastic. The 12" single extends the song to about six minutes in length (labeled as the "Video Mix"), and features the B-side "Feel U Up", a previously unreleased Camille track which would later be available on The Hits/The B-Sides compilation. "Feel U Up" was originally cut in 1981, but re-recorded in 1986 for the Camille album. Despite being intended for a totally different project, the horn arrangement and vocal style compliment "Partyman" perfectly. The 12" single also included a "Purple Party Mix", which starts with a string of samples from Prince's earlier hits and contains different lyrics. A track identified as a "music mix" is an instrumental of the "Purple Party Mix". The song's accompanying music video is often regarded by fans as one of his finest, again presenting Prince's "Gemini" persona dressed in a "half-Joker" costume. Owing to licensing problems, "Partyman", like all of the Batman-era hits, has failed to appear on any Prince compilation album, barring the UK singles promoting The Hits/The B-Sides.

Bsides & albm & era Outtakes Batdance The track from Batman is an edit of this outtake. The middle section is basically the same, but the 2 sections based on "200 Balloons" are extended. This version contains some samples from "House In Order", which was later given to Mavis Staples, and "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic", which was supposed to be in the film but was replaced by "Partyman" after being rejected. "Batdance" replaced "Dance With The Devil", which Prince thought was too dark. Bliss This is Prince's version of the song he gave to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki from a studio session on September 3, 1989 (could be the date of the final mix). Kohiruimaki just substituted some of Prince's vocals for her own. Prince and an engineer can be heard talking before the track. It was collaborated with Levi Seacer, Jr. Dance With The Devil Intended for Batman, this dark eerie track utilizes a drum machine, piano, synth, and the voice of The Joker. The song is based on the scene where The Joker holds Vicki Vale hostage in Gotham's bell tower. Prince warns to be cautious of the devil's tricks. Some lyrics can be seen in the liner notes of the soundtrack. Feel U Up This outtake was recorded toward the end of 1981 and was taped in sequence with "Irresistible Bitch". Both songs were later re-recorded. The lyrics are very similar to to the released song although the vocals seem to have been recorded at a low level. "Feel U Up" was re-recorded in 1986 for the shelved Camille album and finally released in 1989 as the B-side to "Partyman". Flesh And Blood This track was newly written in 1989 for a Jill Jones project. The lyrics concern "revolutionary" love and even mention Napoleon and Josephine. Jill will do what's necessary in the relationship despite being "only flesh and blood." The music is fast and energetic and Prince's voice can clearly be heard in the chorus. Mindbells This is Prince's version given to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki for her 1989 Time The Motion album. She simply substituted his vocals for her own. The song has a production date of September 3rd, 1989, which probably refers to the final mix date. My Baby Knows How To Love Me This bouncy uptempo pop tune was pulled out of the vault to use on the 1989 Jill Jones project. Originally recorded in 1982, it sounds similar to some of the Vanity 6 material written around that time frame; however, the 1989 take contains some sampling of the chorus and other "modern" updates. The lyrics relate that Jill would never stray from a lover that knows how to treat her. Power From Above Originally planned to be the opening track of Carmen Electra's album, "Power From Above" is a powerful uptempo dance cut introduced by synths that recall Bruce Springstein's "Born In The USA". The chorus of "Hey, we got the power, oh, we got the soul" was originally from the outtake "We Got The Power" and later used in "Batdance". Prince also makes appearances as several humorous characters throughout the song. The Voice Inside Written after Lovesexy in the summer of 1988, "The Voice Inside" was intended to be a track on the 1988 LP, Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic. The album was abandoned when Prince got involved with the Batman project and this track is one of the two from the album that remains unreleased. The song is an uplifting number urging everyone to listen to the voice of positivity when we feel the urge to succumb to negative vices. Musically, the song is uptempo and features a number of playful sound effects, similar to some of the Lovesexy material. It segues into "Melody Cool", which later was released on Graffiti Bridge, along with several other tracks from Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic.

thedance said: The Arms Of Orion: is a slow, romantic duet written and performed by Prince with Sheena Easton, from the 1989 Batman soundtrack.[1] Released after "Batdance" and "Partyman" had both gone top 20 in UK/U.S. charts, the single was a top 40 hit single on the US Billboard's Hot 100 at #36. "The Arms of Orion" is a tender but somewhat melodramatic ballad that is accompanied mainly by the piano. Synthesizers also play a strong role throughout the song, programmed to emulate a string section. The track also uses a subdued drum machine loop, and samples of rain and thunder. The lyrics allude to the constellation of Orion, implying that the arms of the figure in the sky are wide enough to hold him and his lover together, although the lovers are far apart. The Arms Of Orion Released October 16, 1989 Orion's arms are wide enough 2 hold us both 2gether Although we're worlds apart, I'd cross the stars 4 U In the heart of a sleepless moon, I'll be with U 4ever This is my destiny till my life is through CHORUS: The Arms of Orion, that's where I wanna be Since U've been gone I've been searching 4 a lover in the Sea of Tranquility Drowning without U here, my dear When I am lost or feeling lonely, I just look 2 heaven I find my comfort there God only knows where U are 2night God only knows where U are 2night Maybe time will tell me Till then I close my eyes, say a prayer 4 U (Say a prayer 4 U 2) CHORUS Orion's heart is bright enough 2 shine on both of us The constellations never fail 2 light the way 4 love Orion's arms are wide enough 2 hold us both 2gether Although we're worlds apart (I'd cross the stars 4 U) I'd cross the stars 4 U CHORUS (Oh) The Arms of Orion, that's where I wanna be Since U've been gone I've been drowning (Lost) In the Sea of Tranquility (Lonely) Drowning without U here (Baby) My dear (Drowning without U, oh) Arms of Orion That's where I wanna be (Where I...) Most of my favorite music from Prince was done this way. Generally, the less imput he had from other artist, the more I liked it. ..and the stripped down, drum machine with a few instrument seemed raw and spontaneous.

Sheila had a collapsed lung(?) and there was disagreement between she & Prince on the direction of her new cd, so she was gone from the Park Boni B left for a solo career and so did Cat But I don't know at what point all of this happened, maybe when they saw the direction of G.B. they freaked out and left. Change is good but too much change can throw people off I really loved the Lovesexy image & era, At least some good outtakes came out of it and with the Batman sessions some cool B-sides and outtakes, it actually went down for me after that The last Lovesexy show was Feb 13, 1989 and the next time Prince played live was on Saturday Night Live's 15th anniversary show on Sep 24, 1989. Not exactly sure who was in the band. I know Miko guitar, Levi bass, Matt keyboards, Michael B drums, Rosie? keyboards, Margaret Cox? vocals and tambourine, and Candy sax. Thanks, I remember an interview by new protege all girl band Prince had thru Robin Powers(they wore clothing similar 2 Cat's in the Lovesexy era) they talked about Sheila & a friend coming to one of their rehearsals in Minneapolis(they said she gave them attitude) I don't know if this was before or after her split with Paisley Park.(I believe the story was posted @Housequake) I don't know if they were all official band members but here goes... and thanks 4 the intro 2 another piece of that time 9 24 1989 Saturday Night Live Rehearsal 1.Electric Chair G Spot Saturday Night Live: Electric Chair Margaret Cox Dr Fink Michael Bland Levi Seacer Jr Mico Weaver Patrice Rushen & Candy

Miko really looks "glammed" up in that pic. I think it was just a one time thing for Patrice and Margaret as far as being in the band, because the next live performance was the Rupert's show on Apr 30, 1990 for Big Chick's benefit. With Rosie replacing Patrice on keys. TRUE BLUE

Does anyone know if there is a circulating copy of "Anna Waiting"? Does anyone have the lyrics for it? I have always liked "Vickie Waiting" but that second "Joker" verse feels very forced and/or "tacked on" to the song. I never felt it fit in with the rest of an otherwise classic bitter-sweet track. Lyrics... "Vicki Waiting" The phone rings - it's Vicki callin' She wants me 2 come 2 the crib U see, conversation's better than being lonely So I try my best 2 ad lib I tell her the joke about the woman Who asked her lover - "Why is your organ so small?" He replied, "I didn't know I was playin' in a cathedral" Vicki didn't laugh at all This is where she wants 2 be And I am what she wants 2 see I've never known a love so sweet But still I keep Vicki waiting Alright All is well in Gotham City The sound of terror is all U hear Sometime a pistol take the place of her body Sometimes her body's here U see, when crime is your only love All that matters - the present, the here and now People, people - whatever floats this Joker's boat Is whatever this Joker will bang CHORUS: This is where she wants 2 be (I...) I am what she wants 2 see Never known a love so sweet Still I keep Vicki waiting Oh yeah Wait on, mama Talk of children still frightens me Is my character enough 2 be? (Never) One that deserves a copy made? (Never, never) This I one day, I hope 2 see Until then she's held at bay by my animal-like persistence Or maybe she's just 2 proud 2 say That fate (fate) brought us 2gether And this is where she wants 2 stay CHORUS {x2} (Oh) (Oh yeah) (Ah yeah, yeah, yeah) All is well in Gotham Town (This is where she wants 2 be) I am what she wants 2 see I've never known a love so sweet But still I keep Vicki... Still I keep Vicki... Still I keep Vicki waiting, oh yeah (Waiting) Uh-huh, uh-huh Still I keep Vicki... Still I keep Vicki waiting This is where she wants 2 be © 1989 Controversy Music - ASCAP [Edited 2/17/10 17:28pm] It's almost like there is an "event horizon" for stupidity - once you fall below that line, you're too stupid to know you're stupid.
