Must see in MPLS?

I'm going to Minneapolis in July and was wondering if there are any other Prince related places I have to see, other than these:

    Paisley Park
    Uptown
    Hard Rock Cafe
Restaurant Applebee’s (Prince memorabilia on the back wall)
    First Avenue
The Quest Club (f.k.a. Glam Slam)
    Calhoun Square boutique
    Bunker's Music Bar
Minnesota History Center's newly-opened exhibit Sounds Good to Me: Music in Minnesota
Ground old purple house by Galpin BLVD / Symbol in driveway
The house from Purple Rain at 3420 Snelling Avenue South, Minneapolis
    Flyte Tyme Studio’s
Minneapolis Central high school / although it's destroyed
Hospital Mt. Sinai on Chicago Ave
    Target Center
Park Avenue United Methodist Church (where Prince married Mayte)
Lincoln Junior High School of Minneapolis
The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame

Any other suggestions?

Why does there have to be a soundcheck? I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

It doesn't exist...unless you're looking under the dirt.

It was torn down ages ago, because it was wonky and unsafe. There are only pictures now.

Lake Minnetonka is a real lake. Lake Minnewashta was just NW of Prince's house on Galpin (the one mention in "Zanalee", and that has been since torn down just like the one on Kiowa Trail (the purple house)). Just NW of Lake Minnewashta is Lake Minnetonka. It lies on the north is of Rte/Highway 7, which pretty much runs West-East.

Just as a reference. The back of Prince's yellow house on Galpin faced Lake Ann and Lake Lucy.

I thought The Quest was no more. I also thought for a while that Clear Channel owned it after Gilbert Davison gave it up. The building itself is still there. It's just an office building, and the club was right inside, to the left, on the first floor through the main entrance on N. Fifth. I was there once when it was Glam Slam (circa 1993 or 1994), and once as The Quest (1997 - to see The Time w/ special bassist Terry Lewis). It was pretty good sized, and had a second level to it. During Glam Slam days, it had a gift shop down stairs, with over priced, but very cool stuff in it.

Also, Flyte Tyme studios is no more. It is, and was always, just a brick building in an industrial office park. If you didn't know what to look for, you'd look right past it. Very uneventful on the outside. Flyte Tyme is now settled in Santa Monica, CA. You'd waste your time going out to Edina for that.

You could still try to find the land Prince owns on Galpin, and Kiowa Trail (I think the fence is still up there, just google map it all, they're not too far, relatively, from each other, or Paisley Park).

The Target Center sits adjacent to First Avenue. In fact, when you want a good photo of First Avenue, you'll be standing on the sidewalk for the Target Center.

The Hard Rock, I think, is right on W. Lake and Hennepin Ave. It used to be a Disk-Go-Round records. On West Lake is the old NPG store, which is an antique shop now. There's a great rib place in Calhoun Square that is worth the trip. They usually have live music too. Right next to that was a salon called City Looks that I worked at. I'm not sure if it's there anymore.

When you come out of Calhoun Square, exit onto West Lake street. Find 1408, and I believe that was the old NPG Store. They're refaced some of those buildings so they're different than the old pictures.

Spend time down on Nicolette Mall, which is basically a long strip of road that's been blocked off and cobble stoned for pedestrians. There used to be a great record store down there somewhere. There's also a news station which used to do their weather report outside the studio there. They had lights set up and everything and the guy would just walk out and do the weather in front of everyone. Lots of great shops and restaurants all along there. Don't forget to find the Mary Tyler Moore history there too. It's part of Mpls as much as Prince.

You'll never find the school of course, and I wouldn't bother with it. You got me on the address for the Purple Rain house. I never knew it. But good luck.

Mpls is a big place, and downtown Mpls is alive at night. It's like a mini NYC, whereas St. Paul at night is dead as Prince's creativity these days (DOH!). Remember highway 94 East connects the two. I've driven it a few times back in the day.

Take time to go to the Mall of America. Yes it's huge, and there's a lot of shit to see, but make a plan and stick to that, so you're not running around crazy trying to see shit. Get a map and plan your strategy. There used to be a Planet Hollywood in the Mall of America. In the entry foyer, in a glass case, was Prince's outfit during his scene w/ Apollonia where she jumps in the lake. There might have been some other stuff in the restaurant as well from him. I'm sure there's something in the Hard Rock.

There's also a great record store on W. Lake (or Lagoon Ave), just north of Hennepin, called Ameoba Records (?), and it's a good place to dig for stuff.

When you're on Hennepin and W. Lake, the center of Uptown, you'll see an UPTOWN sign over a theater or a building. Take a pic.

Lake of the Isles (mentioned in "Rock N Roll is Alive") is a few walking blocks NW of Calhoun Square. Just head west on Lagoon or W. Lake, about six blocks, and turn right (N), and there it is. One of 10,000 or more. Take time to just sit out and enjoy the people and the sunshine around Lake Calhoun (just next to Lake of the Isles. It's wonderful.

There is no better summer I spent in the world, than in Minneapolis. I mean that.

Hard Rock Cafe sits on block "E" directly across from First Ave and The Target Center downtown and not in Uptown in which Lake Street runs through.

Correct, Quest is no more. Originally from Mpls, I lived there during the Glam Slam years and the first Quest year. When I went back in 2008, there was a new venue called Epic moving in but since it was still under construction, I couldn't go in to check it out. Per the pix on their web site, epicmpls.com, it looks more Prince-ish than Glam Slam did.

How about the public restroom where Pepe Willie broke wind one time after a 94 East session? Or the McDonalds where TC Ellis is in charge of fries and tells stories to any customer who will listen about his Graffiti Bridge glory days? Or (my personal fav) the elevator that Prince was riding in when he realized that he would just be a bum without Wendy and Lisa?

The current owners of that house sold the original bathtub (which they billed as Prince's bathtub) on eBay a few years ago. lol

It's on the Uptown Theater.

I saw Coco Avec Chanel there when I was in Minneapolis last fall.

Outside the Macy's in downtown Minneapolis is a statue honoring the Mary Tyler Moore Show which was set in Minneapolis in the 70's. It is pretty cool if you are a child of the 70's that remembers how popular that show was. The last time I visited Minneapolis was a few years ago in 2007 for the launch of the 3121 perfume when Prince performed at the Macy's store, followed by two more performances later that evening at Targer Center and First Avenue, respectively. Inside the Macy's store at that time was a rather large display (and window display) for the perfume and Prince, but I am not sure if they would still have the cosmetics department done up for it. When you go to the Hard Rock across the street from First Avenue, make sure you go through the gift shop and up the stairs to the second floor for a great Prince display. The aquarium and amusement park inside Mall of America is a lot of fun too. I found that some of the restaurants in downtown and the cool Uptown area had servers who had stories about Prince coming to eat there. One said Prince would drink red wine through a straw to not stain his teeth and that the waiters would collect the used straws as some sort of souvenier after he left. Sounds like something I would do too. It is a great city with a lot to see and do.

Done up for it? Hell...they don't even sell the perfume at Macy's anymore. (The last time I saw it in a retail establishment, it was at Target.) lol

The fence and gate, and a new security "shack" on Galpin still stands where the white house with black trim (formerly purple and yellow) used to be. The black gate with the love and peace symbol still stands where the purple house used to be on Kiowa Trail. Glam Slam is now Epic. Prince has been there recently on more than one occasion. Planet Hollywood is closed. The record store that Ernestsewell referenced on Nicollet Mall, Let It Be Records, is also closed. They used to have ALL the vinyl. mad

Indeed it is!! I got lucky when I went. I picked a random night to see a show wit my friend & we ended up meeting Bobby Zs' nephew, he was the drummer for one of the bands. I lost my 1st ave shirt which is a bummer!!

This is pretty random but it is a pretty cool picture for the photo album: I took a picture with the freeway entrance for "94 East". And also took a pic with a "City of Minnetonka" sign. There's also a street named "Prince". I believe it's downtown somewhere.
