brilliant album...
funny story...when i got my ONA live from NPGMC they're were 3 copies of the piano album inside it.
I still have 2 sealed copies which I plan to keep for a wee while yet.

I got one extra copy from NPGMC. Sold it a few years ago on Ebay for €124.00.

TheVoid

One Night Alone seems nice enough, but is actually quite shallow and unsatisfying in the end. Pretty melodies and pretty words, but not sincere to me. My enthusiasm for one night alone is at a low ebb.

Nay.

I always thought the songs sounded like demos... like he was just trying some ideas out. Which isn't to say it's bad, just "unfinished"-sounding and boring. I agree with Ernest that some of the editing is odd. The songs sounded a lot better on the Live album.

It's amazing how much music actually came out of this period - we had the Rainbow Children, Xpectation, ONA, ONA Live, C-Note, N.E.W.S., the ONA EP, plus the NPGMC stuff... the early 2000s was practically a deluge!

It says "demo" right on the packaging.

That's why I don't like it. It's a half-assed idea disguised as a "piano album".

Love. Love. Love.

I finally got this on disc for Christmas. Cost an arm and a leg, but no regrets. cool

It does? It's been a while since I've looked at the packaging. Hmm, actually come to think of it, this was the first CD in Prince's "skimpy packaging" adventures!

If they're demos, I'd love to hear full versions! I don't agree with Avalanche's lyrics, but a full-on angry guitar version would be fantastic.

Could you specify what you don't like, Earnest? I find some of the songs compelling and others--unh okay--like "Arboretum." The song you go to bed with accompanied by a glass of milk. LOL But others I like and I would like to see Prince do another CD just being himself and not overloaded with so much instrumentation--I like the jazz licks!smile

It's Ernest. wink (earnest is an adjective)

The album is just boring to me. It's like a bunch of demos. I like the full band version of "U're Gonna C Me" on Mplsound a lot better than the piano version. "A Case of U" was a big let down. The ending was just weird, and could have been ended better. The racist shit is boring and, at this point, repetitive. There just aren't any songs that click with me at all. I was super anxious for the CD, but then after a listen, I was like.....eh, really? I haven't listened to it since it came out. I gave it a few spins, but quickly lost interest.

don't worry bout his opinion, Earnest actually thinks Planet Earth is a good cd!..smile (just kidding, i just think it's funny how big difference of taste Prince fans have overall) ; ONA is really beautifull....

The packaging is really terrible any way you cut it. I agree about Avalanche. The lyrics appear to come from a very sectarian, extremely limited historical scope. Despite some flaws, the music on ONA is really quite beautiful.

Not to mention, 'Avalanche' is one of his best vocal performances on record of the 00's nod

I love the "Ooh, he's sayin' sign your kingdom over to me, yeah.. and be known throughout the land".

His worst album for me. It's not without some merit however.

ONA is very good 8/10
U're Gonna C Me Is very good, I do much prefer the MPLSond version 8/10
Here on Earth is boring 5/10
A Case Of U, nice cover, I don't like the outro 6/10
Objects in the mirror and have a heart are ok 6/10
Avalanche has a great vocal 7/10
Pearls B4 the swine is nice. 7/10
Young and Beautiful is not good 4/10
Aboretum is boring. 5/10

Overall I'd say 6/10. It's better when listened to in a dim lit room after a few glasses of red wine.
Something BIG Is Coming.

This CD is in my all-time Top Ten Prince LPs. The Title track is a rare gem.

Shit, forgot about Pearls Before the Swine... okay, so 2 top class tracks on that album in my opinion, 1. Avalanche (which kind of sound like the intro to The Stranger by Billy Joel) and Pearls Before the Swine.

nod

the vocal performance on "Avalanche" is startling in it's brilliance.
i have do admit that i cringe ever so slightly at the abe lincoln bit
but that song is an absolute classic regardless.

the only song on this album that i could do without it "objects in the mirror",
and even that is nice enough, but i can't get past that "load in the dryer" bit.

great album, great companion disc to "the truth", which is imo still one of
the best albums from the 90s. listened to it again last night on good, clear
headphones and it blew me away once again.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
