I've heard it at least once a year, every year since I was 5 and started school. And on page 20, at post 595, in the first thread on this topic, I said:

It's very "anthem"-like! At the 00:50 mark, I almost started singing the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice And Sing".

Yeah, a few of us mentioned it on the first thread. I said...

Is it just me or did the opening remind you of Lift Every Voice and Sing?

The intro is similar...

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Star Tribune, Minneapolis, C.J. column: Prince's 'fight' song sounded familiar - and led to a familiar result
Jan, 26, 2010 04:08 AM - Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN)

Jan. 26--Thanks a lot for the rousing "Vikings fight song," Prince.

"The reason the Vikings lost was that damned fight song. After hearing it they didn't know whether to fight, win or march for civil rights," said Sheletta Brundidge, an FM107 show co-host and comedian.

She might be onto a thing or two, including this: "As soon as I heard it, I knew right way, that's the 'Black National Anthem.' Are we fighting or unifying? I was confused."

She's talking about the haunting melodic similarities between the anthem and the "fight song" -- which STUNK and has been justifiably ripped all over the Internet, radio and by ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption." On Friday afternoon, Brundidge said she read a post on startribune.com about Prince's fight song and decided it was worth discussing on her new 7-9 p.m. weeknight talk show.

"Donny Love [FM107 producer] had the song in the system. As soon as he pulled it up [she recognized the music; Love did not.]. Now, of course, nobody in Minnesota knows the 'Black National Anthem.' But girrrl, Donny pulled them up and had them on two different channels, and he would play one, pause it, and play the other one and pause it. They were absolutely in sync."

At Sheletta.com, she posted both songs. I'm inclined to think she's dead on because I instantly disliked the melody of Prince's sorry "Purple and Gold." That's my usual reaction to the anthem, also known as "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The message of the song is laudable, but the up and down tempo has always been displeasing to my ear (which wasn't fooled by Prince's version, albeit jazzed up).

I'm guessing that the anthem is in the public domain, so nobody's suggesting Prince faces any copyright issues.

Prince told Fox 9's Robyne Robinson that he was inspired to write the song after being on hand for the Vikings' spanking of the Cowboys in the divisional matchup.

Never mind that Brett Favre's Vikings had been succeeding just fine without any musical support from Symbolina. Never mind the lyrics have a repurposed feel, as in Symbolina tweaked lyrics from one of the millions of songs he's written and most notably inserted the words "Purple and Gold." Ta-daaa. Robinson has not responded to my e-mail requesting that her friend Prince call so we can talk about the inspiration for the melody of his fight song.

Brundidge text-messaged me Monday at 8:41 a.m. to say the Prince song was the reason the Vikings didn't defeat Darren Sharper's Saints in Sunday's title game. This is noted because there would be great whining if I don't acknowledge that at 10:41 p.m. Sunday, Fancy Ray mailed this to me: "Vikings LOSE... I blame it on THAT Prince song!!!"

http://www.poten.com/News...d=10325522
http://www.startribune.com/.

I just would like to take this opportunity to state that I consider Sheletta Brundidge to be one of the most annoying, obnoxious and unfunny (despite her claim of being a 'comedian' which is, ironically, HILARIOUS in itself) personalities currently polluting the Twin Cities radio airwaves.

Her bashing "Purple and Gold" causes me inner conflict, because I instantly experience an intense kneejerk reaction to defend the song and it's not within my ability to be such a hypocrite. confused

Okay thanks for letting me spew for a moment about Sheletta. lol Pleas resume the skewering of "Purple and Gold".

By the way, KMSP Ch. 9 showed a clip of Sheila's awesome video on last night's (Thursday) evening newscast, and they said Sheila says she "doesn't know if Prince has seen it yet".

Ok, now this is funny. Purple Rain is on Encore, and I just heard this track while the love scene from PR was playing.

I invite everyone to mute PR and play this song while Apples and Prince make-out. It's a brand new Prince experience.

Funny thing about this one is...
...it's SO far from ANYTHING Prince ever recorded quality- and ESPECIALLY style-wise... so....
Everybody who "likes this one" just shows that he or she likes to enjoy every single poop of Prince. Poor lifes...

It´s really painfull to hear this song (is that why it´s called a fight song maybe confused ). The song i so silly, musicaly low quality and below anything he have done before. This is so bad that it even makes the terriable Grafitti Bridge movie look good!

Could anyone imagine this when you drowned amazed by the amazing "Parade" and "SOTT" albums back in the days? That Prince one day would do something like this indescribable terrible? A football fight song!!!

I remember when I heard "Arms of Orion" for the first time. It gave me the same creeps of discomfort and a feeling of disappointment that the Prince now begun to make smooth deleted cheesy ballads, far away from the "Lets pretend were married", "Darling Nikki ".... but this fight song is beyond my worst imagination.

All of it. It's nonsensical to think that when a celebrity gets attention for doing something stupid and awful that he's somehow made a genius move.

Besides, who's talking about it now except for us? The Vikings lost, and how much do you want to bet that next year, and every year after, no one but no one will EVER sing that song at a Vikings game? All he did was get people across the country to make fun of him for a week.

Bad publicity is better than no publicity? Not true.

I like this song. I actually like to sing along. I didnt get it at first but then it struck me: a "fight" song makes you want to see along in unison with a large number of fans. This song does that for me.

I loved it. I knew most people wouldn't get it though. Prince I'm sure did too, which is why he wrote it that way. I actually expected a bit more from Prince fans. I usually let you guys rant on and don't say much but THINK PEOPLE!!! Why would arguably one of the best recording artists of the past 20 years make this song? Rarely does one of his songs not do what he intended, so why?

Publicity? Don't know much about "traditional" fight songs, but an attempt to gain a wider fan base from older, more knowledgeable football die-hards? Idk.
What do you think?

the veil of the sky draws open
the roar of the chariots touch down
we r the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
as we approach the throne we won't bow down
this time we won't b denied

raise every voice and let it b known
in the name of the purple and gold

we come in the name of the purple and gold
all of the odds r in r favor

we r the truth if the truth can b told
long reign the purple and gold

the eyes say ready 4 battle

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA this song is hilarious. Of course, being the Laker fam I am I was originally jealous/pissed that he wrote a song called Purple & Gold that wasn't about the Lakers...then I heard this and started imagining the Lakers' reaction upon hearing something like this written for them and the L.A. market. He'd probably be banned from any game attendance...Jack Nicholson would be the enforcer. The Laker Girls' routine would be all middle fingers. On and on and yes I amuse myself.

Guess it works for the Vikings market. And I agree that part of it sounds like "Lift Every Voice and Sing"...a.k.a. the Negro National Anthem. Big ups for that one, P! That's even more hilarious...gotta love him.
