By the way, nice mixes Ernest.

Thanks. I'm very pleased w/ them. I just need to tweak one little part in "My Name is Prince. It bugs me. The rest, I think, is spot on....for me anyway.

I forgot to include "Temptation" for everyone, but that one is pretty easy to put a fade on if desired (I used Adobe Audition for that one, formerly known as Cool Edit Pro - the rest I used Mixmeister to edit and crossfade things.)

I must say...this is quite disgusting. It's like the Catholic Church demanding Da Vinci change his paintings..as they have..or like the church demanding Madonna change her show, which they have...or Hitler deleting perfectly good humans..because they weren't to his liking..this is megalomania at it's highest...even for personal use. I think it's sick. Mad. Like a twisted scientist altering biology...This is not the same as a remix..sorry. This is just plain wierd. I am cool with how Prince intended his tracks to be...THIS is very odd and kind of coo-coo. No offense personaly...

Lotusboy. I respect that you like the original version and your sense of loyalty to the man, but I also respect Ernest version of how he would interpret the song less Tony M.

Allthough if I had to take a liking to which overall version I would rather listen to it would be Ernest.

I'll just draw the line and say I don't believe Tony M. enhanced any of the recordings he layed down his vocals on. Never thought he had the high level of talent compared to other musicians Prince has worked with. Its also good to give props out to Prince when you like something hes done but also give him a little pushback when you're just not feeling it. I think by giving him a little pushback its not slighting him or being negative but actually benefits Prince receiving a balanced point of view, as opposed to no pushback by a bunch hacks that would say YES or agree to his every whim.

This response isn't about me. You made some good points in your response to troll. In a general sense - it really is up to a fan to NOT bend to every whim that an artist has in them. Every artist has some weird period in their music, and the fans will either drink it down blindly, or sit up and think "Now that ain't quite right". It's about each person's taste of course. I think the 00's were horrible for Prince's music, yet some argue that The Rainbow Children and Musicology is some of his best work in 10 years to that point. Some hate Planet Earth, but sans a song or two, I like the album a lot, as I do 3121.

I've found few to no fans that have ever thought Tony M. added anything positive, interesting, or valuable to Prince's musical legacy from 1989-1992. Hell, even Kirk Johnson got a lot of backlash for his dry and uninspired drum beats from 1996-2001. New Power Soul would have been 10x better if just to have some live drumming throughout. It's why fans gravitate toward Exodus more, in general, when it comes to the three NPG albums. It had great live drumming, and felt like a BAND album.

A real fan does not accept every single thing an artist does. It's not about giving room to be "a hater" (such a stupid term), it's about being objective. Being a musician, I tend to listen to music differently, and judge it more harshly sometimes, than someone who perhaps is not a musician. That goes for any musician, in some cases.

Iron sharpens iron. Fans hopefully push an artist to do better, and hopefully an artist pushes themselves to do better as well, and give the fans something that is worth their money, time, effort, and energy.

As far as the editing - I'm loving it. prince is SO much more enjoyable without that MFer in the mix.

I have to hand it to you Ernest, it took 18 years for someone to find the courage to do what you have done ..... how can I hear those remixes? Tony M's rapping was bombastic and slipshod all in one, compared to some of the other freestylers at the time, he was wack, all his rap sounded like a cheaply made pastiche rather than the real thing.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I have to say that since I made these edits, I've found myself listening to Diamonds and Pearls more. It was always a "thin" sounding album to me overall (although some songs are "thicker" than others). I hated Tony M. on it as well of course. I listened to prince more because it was a fuller and richer album to me. But now w/ Tony out of songs like "Push" or "Daddy Pop", I really am listening to D&P more. I feel like I'm being reacquainted w/ the CD.

I did just that. I freed Tony M. from having to enter my ear canal on some songs. I've long though of conducting my own little experiment with editing a few Prince tunes down. Yes, I know. It's not my job, but whatever.

I took a handful of songs and edited a few things here and there to make them flow a bit better.

"Temptation" - I put a quick fade on the end after the main song ends. You can actually hear Prince's guitar ending (something I never really noticed), and where he immediately added that stupid tag ending. After his last "...my body.." I put a fade over the next 2 or 3 measures. Works great. Song clocks at 5:02. I'll put the new times on the songs I list hereon.

Then I headed over to the Diamonds & Pearls album, and worked over a few songs there.

I edited Tony M. out of "Daddy Pop" (4:29), "Willing & Able" (4:33), "Push" (4:58), and "Live 4 Love" (6:22). A couple of the edits were tricky, but overall they were pretty easy to do. "Live 4 Love" was the tricky one, and "Willing & Able" took some coddling to get it right. "Push" is full of rap, but just to get rid of Tony's rap and go straight to Prince's felt better.

I then worked on a few songs from prince.

I reworked "My Name Is Prince" (5:16), and totally removed Tony's rap. Wasn't too hard, and it ends much sooner. I never liked that song because it was just too damn long, and not nearly interesting enough to be THAT long. Good song, but better w/o Tony.

"Sexy M.F." (4:40) got rid of Tony as well. Wasn't much on that one, but it's highly superior. The music swells and isn't interrupted w/ his nonsense. I think I also cut out some of the "sexy MF, shakin' that ass" chant. It goes from Levi's solo, right into another horn break, then the big ending, totally skipping Tony.

"Love 2 The 9's" (4:54) This one was tricky as well. I cut out Tony's interview of the female totally. It goes from Prince saying "hit it", to a horn part, then "would you hug me on a crowded street". The flow is SO SO SO much better on this one. LOVE IT.

"The Continental" (3:09) I just can't stand that weird ass ending on it. A measure before it switches to that ending, I worked in him saying "CONTINENTAL" from the beginning of the song (as to create a more solid ending). It ends with a snare hit and drops right into "Damn U" when played in order. It's much snappier at just over 3 minutes.

"The Flow" (1:54) Much shorter w/o Tony's nonsense in there, but it works. I always loved the song, but his machine gun rapping was just insane to me. It was muddled. You still hear Prince say, "Tony, kick that piece of shit", but the music just continues on. It's almost like an awesome extended instrumental ending after Prince's verse continuing with the "rock to the F L O W" chant throughout of course.

Ultimately I like these edits. We all hate Tony M., I think. I took the time to take his dumb ass out of the songs, and frankly the albums are a lot better for it. I couldn't take him out of things like "Gett Off" or his little parts earlier on in "Live 4 Love", etc. But his "moments" are totally deleted. As I went back and listened to some of the songs in order of the album, and let other unedited songs segue in and out, I was happier hearing them. D&P has some weak points obviously (like "Jughead" which is deleted 100% from my playlist), but the lack of Tony makes it a better album for me. I've always been a huge fan of prince, and even moreso now.

Tony M is on "The Continental"? I only like the end of this song with the prince sex rap to Carmen Electra.

The 14 yr. old kid got a deal on a new Jerry Heller label (god i forgot the name) that went belly up under a Dre Lawsuit. We were cool because we got an advance already lol. I saw him downtown a couple of yrs. ago and he looks older than me and has five kids, does this validate Tony M's cringe worthy rapping on Prince's eary 90's output? if you say so.But as the consumer who used to yell awwww damnit when i song went south i'll gladly pony up 10 bucks for the creepy defacing of Princes artistic intent lol-it's my money.

(Side note)
This is an interesting concept actually. Not unlike the fan-edits of films (you know, fanedit.org and the likes), where fans chop off the fat and the self indulgence of the artist's work and often get a much more clear and energized result out of it.

I have no doubt that Prince would never embrace this concept, even though acts like Radiohead have used it to get their fans more involved and proved it profitable as well.

I really dislike Tony M's vocal input on Prince's records, and Diamonds and Pearls have always to me just been sitting there, screaming for a re-vamp of sorts. So power to you.

I still dont understand why all this slander continues to errupt about Tony M.
Was he the greatest? certainly not but first we need to ask "is Prince a hip-hop
artist?" "is he a rapper?" I guess we all know the answer to that.
The point is we all know NOTHING goes on a P record or stage without his direct consent. even if he didnt write it and how its presented is without question his
doing.
Further more, least we forget Tony was the driving force in the best single to
come from that era "sexy mf"
Lastly we all love P, We've loved him for years and will for ever more.
These musicians/rappers are hand picked by him for whatever and when they
are within the walls of Paisley we love them to death too!!
I suggest whatever you were sippin on that made you keep quiet and enjoy the
ride then... you go get another shot infact make it a double lol
The worst thing is to smile and ejoy the ride while your on it....
just to turn around and pick apart what you didnt like about it later!!!

any fool could have done what Tony did in Gett Off. The fact is any song featuring him is worse for it.

Oh, and i forgot to say ta to Ernest, very interesting, i can still hear the burger-flipper in places for obvious reasons, but for the most part (minus My Name Is..), impressive indeed. Good Work.

Anyway, a while back I compiled an album full of 30 Prince songs that I'd edited down as a "sampler" of sorts, the songs ranged from around 1:30 to 4:00 for some of the really long ones. My most effective edit was on "When U Luv Somebody," though, took out that spoken-rap thing near the end that dampers an otherwise favorite song of mine.
