Prince's Weak Spots

For me, I believe the drums are his weakness. What do ya'll think?

That's because he's not a drummer. Yes, he can play the drums but how is not manifesting his time on the drums considered a weak spot? He's had some great drummers with him, Sheila E. being one of the best. So I don't see a problem...there! biggrin

1. Business model (he doesn't have one)

2. Articulating a logical explanation for anything in an interview. ANYTHING. Even music, which is tragic.

3. Hi ego. At age 50, it's not working out for him very well.

4. His women (a third Prince CD on the lotusflow3r set would surely not suck as bad as a Bria CD, even if Prince decided for it to be another tedius jazz fusion instrumental).

5. Some of his prince.org fans and there pointless photo threads, and lyric speculation threads. UGH.... God, can you not exorcise them to another Universe?

6. Religion. Where it was once inspirational and uplifting, it's now a bit stifling. I'm not just referring to not cursing (I actually think it's great he's not cursing. His casual use of 'n:ky:gger' in prince and Gold was ganstat catchup at the cost of dignity).

Wow same old head in ass nosense.

Prince's weakness is lyrics. I would say he needs to work on those a little bit more other than that for a 50 year-old to even still have the abilty to record music and have a fan base makes P pretty strong when you compare him to his peers.

What's wrong with his lyrics? The words to a lot of his songs are so mindblowing it takes my breath away. He can be light when he wants to but trust me, Prince's stuff is so deep it will definetly make a man stop and think. nod

IMO, as of lately, Prince's lyrics have been his weak spot. While he's evolved as a musician, he's mostly been in the same place as a lyricist. He used to be the master of the sexual metaphor, but he slowly censored himself. It also doesn't help that he's never went "beneath the surface". He's been in the business almost over 30 years yet his songs fail to reveal his feelings, no matter how passionately sung.

Eh? That just doesn't make sense!! If he can play drums, then he is a drummer!

He's been playing drums almost as long as he's played piano and guitar and, whilst he is not in the league of John Blackwell or Sheila E (who are specialists on that instrument), Prince is more than capable and can play some complex rhythms (Sexual Suicide springs to mind). And, considering he'll lay down a drum part with no click track and nail it.....well, it just blows the "he's not a drummer" statement out the water!

Not his music, Prince is a great drummer, guitarist, bass player, keyboardist, synthesisers, maracas, zither, harpsicords, hurdy gurdy, barrel organ, calliope and triangle, what ever he plays he can make it funky. His best instrument is his voice. Then his guitar skills.
His songwriting skills, although flagging from their mid -late 80s peak are hardly weak.
What is weak is the fact he belongs to a hate filled fundamentalist cult.
His business models suck too, dodgy web sites and lack of promotion of his records. And I agree bringing the Brias and Tamar into his music and making his fans buy their crappy records is very weak.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I would not say drums is his weakness, I would say I have not seen that it's his BEST instrument to play or improvise with. Guitar would be 1st and then keyboards 2nd (best).

If we're talking about the core instruments, ie, drums, keyboards, guitars, bass, then yeah, out of those, drums would be his weakest spot. However, his drum machine programming is out of this world and he's certainly a competent drummer.

his weak spots you say?

pretty women
money
handclaps and fingasnaps (uses a machine)
saxophone (doesn't play but has tried)
makeup (not likely to go au naturale too often)
his hips

IMO:

Duets on his albums (Baby Knows, Arms of Orion)

Medleys in concerts

Cover songs on albums (Betcha By golly Wow comes to mind)

Rapping/Reggae (I know he is not a rapper, but it seems forced when he does try and the reggae thing is what destroyed "the Sun, the Moon, and Stars")
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."
