Yes, this is the same as the French release, most likely just imported French stock actually.

Yeah. Anyone who wanted the album would surely have got it by now. He could increase the longevity by pushing another single to radio/making a new music video and actually getting the label to get it on TV.....but what are the chances of that?

Because there are some, like me, who've only had the download until now and have been waiting for it to get to a sensible price so I can own the actual discs and add them to my collection. I've been checking my local HMV periodically - a month or so ago the 3-disc set (about 10 copies) was £21, so I thought I'd wait a while longer. I went in there last week, only one copy left and that was £38!!! So, again, thought I'd wait - so, this is good news for me smile

Some will sell. And, really, what does it matter to you anyway? wink

Yeah I might ask for this for christmas. smile I've seen a few in HMV stores, all £30 (which is a fair price for 3 albums, but I don't want all 3, it's expensive etc.).

Plus I want Crimson + Clover!

Why didn't you just buy it from eBay?

I got mine for £12 on there about a week after it was released in the States.

Because, as an artist myself, I prefer any money I spend to support the artist in question - hence, I don't buy from ebay (unless I was replacing a lost item, for example - but I prefer to buy new anyway). Its both a moral obligation and having to practice what I preach - how can I expect people to pay for my music (fully knowing, of course, that not everyone does), if I don't legitimately pay for it myself?

As a moderately successful artist, I'm not rolling in cash, so have to cut my cloth. And, anyhow, I was happy to live with the download until an appropriately priced product came along, and here it is wink No sweat, eh?

if you knew the first thing about the music business you would understand how much bullshit that is and how wrong you were

sales are made when retailers buy the product, what happens after that is irrelevant. it's like any goods, manufacturer sells to retailer, manufacturer makes profit, retailer sells and makes profit or not depending on the price they sell at. you may have a wholesaler in the middle, but thats irrelevant to the manufacturer

in the music business it's even more fucked up because people are paid advances based on estimated sales, so unless the actual sales from the manufacturer aka record company, exceed the estimate, the artists owes the record company money

basically the artist gets paid a lump sum for making the record, what happens after that is pretty irrelevant unless the record is a surprise hit, and then the artist may get more money, but then if that's the case they get so much money your example of fleabay means nothing to them

just download the fucking albums and don't let the record companies get money. let the record companies die out, and let the artists get back to a position they were in over a hundred years ago before record companies turned art into business. then you won't have shit like shitney spears at number one

No need to be so belligerent or assumptive about what I know! I am well aware of advance payment structures - they are generally applicable to major label acts yes, not smaller, independent artists like myself. Distribution deals differ - I get no advance from the label and get paid on actual sales and downloads as opposed to any estimates.

Your post contradicts itself anyway - as you rightly state, if the advance doesn't match the sales, then the artist ends up owing the label. So, actually, it will favour the artist for more albums to be legitimately sold and help recoup against the advance! Your utopian rally against the man seems admirable enough, just not very well considered.

However, we are trying to take more control of our sales by setting up our own label for the next album.

I still won't advocate or partake in downloading albums for nothing, whether or not a record label or any other third-party get a share (someone always will - even with our own label, we will still have to pay the distributor) - some of that money still rightfully goes to the artist and should continue to do so. No, a purchase on ebay won't necessarily hurt an artist with the earnings of the likes of Prince, but it does hurt those who sell more modest numbers.

I'd like to add that the first thing I do know about the music business is the business that affects me. The business models and markets I deal with are a million miles away from the mainstream and major corporations. I don't pretend to be an authority on the music business at large and, in fact, the less I can deal with the business side of things the better - making music is what I do and do best and business eventually gets in the way of the creativity. But sharing an empathy for artists getting paid for their work is something at the forefront of my mind.....sorry if that abhors you! neutral

unkleg

boxed I only *just* got my copy, and only because my sister happened to be in Paris last Friday!

Considering Prince is on his own label now, isn't it fair to assume he's getting a larger slice of sales (minus distribution costs)?

The release schedule for these albums is seriously constipated though!

That's strange. The two French LP's I have are different.

1. Lotusflower double LP with Prince face on cover and title above right
2. Mplssound single LP with the title in guitarneck

The picture above is a combination of the two: Artwork of MPLSound LP with title Lotusflower above left. I wonder which songs are on it.
