MY NAME IS PRINCE - such a great opener to the Love Symbol album Prince sounds so agreesive, attacking the airwaves, going for a hit song once again, in full force.... a great intro, I wanna be your lover/ Party up/ Controversy, and a great bass line, great rhythms as well,

I really like it for all the reasons you stated, many Prince fans don't. Too rap heavy with a Tony M feature perhaps. Maybe Chronic Freeze could give some further info about it's recording.

This mug was dated from the day it came out. An embarrassment. A train-wreck of noise courtesy of Prince's shameless over-sized ego. Though I have to admit, the bass line is good and it's clearly superior to any of Prince's recent uptempo tracks (though that ain't sayin much).

I love it!! I know saying "I love," a Prince song doesn't really explain why...I guess that is where the song sings for itself...When U know the song, U know why U love it. Last Night, I spent another lonely Christmas...Darlin' Darlin' U shoulda been there.~Prince.

Only Prince could make this song. I thought it was good...not great...but good. No, it wasnt exactly hit worthy, but a great way express himself. It showed his arrogance, his confidence, his spitefulness, his funky side, his daring side.

The musicvideo is amazing too, fire and water, Prince dancing, a black outfit, the chain hat and black gloves with gold symbols on... cool, I just love this dynamic track:
best somg on the cd! Unfortunately My Name Is Prince wasn't a hit song, what do you think about this track??? I have so many memories to this track, I was in Barcelona when the album was released october 1992, I bought both the cd and cassette tape, I was listening on the hotel room to those new songs over and over on a Sony Walkman, I was so amazed by this album, Sexy MF had already been releaed and then My Name Is Prince, Prince was so challenging, attacking, shocking with those tracks.... I miss the shock effect in his music of today. But I still have my memories, and the energy of My Name Is Prince will always be dear to me. I saw 2 shows in 1993: Stockholm and Gothenborg, this opener was great LIVE as well. Anyone agrees with me on this track....

There's so much symbolism in that track, and that album.

I dont think you get the irony / humor of this song. It is clearly supposed to sound rather big and bold in a campy / cheesy kind of way, and you can hear he has his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he is bragging about himself in the lyrics: its an ironic take on selfreferential lyrics in the funk / hip-hop genre. If I was forced to give this song a score, it would be 1/10.

Sorry not my cup of tea. The outfit & that pistol like microphone (watergun or whatever) are definitely symbols I don't enjoy. I'll skip that part of Prince. wow do you really hate the gun microphone?
no need for me to say I absolutely love it, 1 of Prince's trademarks, very sexxy.. imo.
still sexxy after all those years..... imo.... [Edited 10/30/09 13:53pm] Hello... I'm Come funkateer 'Danceelectric'

I like the song, even if Tony M.'s rap on the album version is longer than the "Godfather" trilogy. Also, the video looked like it was shot with a Viewmaster. The frustrating thing about this song to me is that it kind of killed momentum for the CD from the start. Prince was hot again, with the success of "Diamonds and Pearls" and he could have kept the buzz going with a strong first single release. "7" was what Warners wanted released, P. went with "MNIP" and it stalled out at number 36. "7" went to number 7 but the album had trickled down the chart that point. Which of course was a moot point because the name change debacle was right around the corner. Not to rehash the whole "Prince chooses first singles like Keanu Reeves chooses post-Matrix movie projects" topic but I wish P. would have listned to the suits more back in the day.

[Edited 10/30/09 10:01am] I doubt he is being intentionally funny. The drum loops, samples and guest rapper, Tony M., lead me to believe he was trying to make an actual hip-hop record. I wonder why Prince thinks he has to make hip-hop. Is it an age thing? A race thing? Did the industry force it on him? I can't figure it out. MNIP has drumloops and samples all over it, which is cool for those artists who can't play instruments, but Prince is just about the greatest musician out there. It's crazy that a falsetto singing guitar player, who even by 1992 had achieved ICON status, is selling out and trying to rap.
