it actually annoys me because there is so much of prince's output (especially the last few albums) that could be hits:

All he really needs is promotion, but I think we have seen the last of a big record company backing prince. It might occur after the "change" that he has been drumming on about for years, was that not meant to happen in 1999?

A crossover project might work better, like a song with someone who is currently big. As long as it is not beyonce I am fine with that. He tried it with Rave, but there were all awful songs. Maybe something with another similar artist, I can only really think of Jamiroquai here, Chromeo?. But Prince can also rock with the best of them2, (I'm crap with modern music, so I can't think of any examples).

He also needs remixes, good ones. There are so many people that he could work with. Good remixes of Black sweat, any from MPlsound, Love, 3121 - they could have been big hits.

I also think he needs someone on the technical side, a mixer or someone at least that can better create a cohesive album or tracks. Rather than the sporadic track lisitings that he tends to employ.

He could do with a manager / spokes person too.

I wish he would do all these - but probably not.

Umm unless you don't wanna have him have a long and prosperous legacy then your absolutely correct.

Whether or not some like it, P is touching the younger generation though his music. Good music is GOOD MUSIC. There ain't no age limit.

I was at an AC/DC concert earlier this year. Everywhere i looked around I saw a little kid with his/her mom or dad rocking out having one hell of a good time.
They are 1 of the many bands that are grateful for their younger audience. I'm downright positive P is aswell.

Maybe. But traditional is for countries and for cultures.
For artists? Nah...

Not just no, but hell to the fucking naw! He's already doing too much to try to pull them in already with sellout shit hop sounding songs like "Ol Skool Company", "Mr. Goodnight", "Incense and Candles", etc. and the horrible "singing a rap" type style on "Box Of Chocolate" like so many of these so-called artists are doing today. Not to mention using rediculous sickening shit hop slang words like "shawty".

I've tolerated a lot of style changes over the years from Prince such as changing from a badass funk/rocker to artsy fartsy and grew to love artsy fartsy but shit hop is something that I don't tolerate and never will tolerate. Yeah, it's been limited to maybe one track on each of the later albums but "MPLShit" had a sellout vibe to it in damn near the entire album. I've bought damn near every album on the day of it's release but next time I'm going to wait until I either hear some samples or until I hear some reviews from orgers who know what I like and dislike. If Prince wants the shit hop crowd, they can have him. But let's just see how long they keep him.

i read alot of your posts and i want to know what exactly do you have against hip hop music? it seems that in every post you have about music you are always bashing hip hop for no particular reason even when it has nothing to do with the topic and if you hate hip hop so much dont listen it and leave the music for someone who enjoys it which is a majority of young people all over the globe and usually most people who do hate this particular brand of music hates or has something against blacks or just young people in general but im not going to hold that against you and in your posts you make huge generalizations about it and as someone who listens to almost every brand of black music out there and other world popular music not all hip hop is bad and you limit yourself to just american brand mainstream rap music and get the conception "oh shit hop this and shit hop that" you can rant and bitch about it all you want but "shit hop" as you call isnt going any where for now

and maybe in the future like 20 years from now we might get some brand new type of music like new techno/funk/rap or something lol

Imo, the younger generation will not be pulled in no matter what.
Why should Prince turn hip-hop, rap or whatever the rage is amongst the youth.
The current youth in 10 years time will generally not be listening to the same music they are now. They might stay locked into some music that "rocked their youth," but their ears will mature and who knows, it's then that they'll find Prince's music somewhere along the road. Only then will they appreciate it, because it will be different that what they had been listening to.

There are very few young people who listen to jazz. But as people mature from the age of 15 to their 40s, their tastes will change and these very often go back to the roots of music. Soul, jazz the classic genres, including classical never die. In today's youthful rage music, where guys call girls every name under the sun and women pretty much do the same thing...one awful song comes to mind.. "if you like it then you better put a ring on it." While it might sound funky to them in their 20s, I doubt it will be the only thing they will ever listen to as they age. By the time this youthful generation will have grown up, they will be faced with new music from their "new generation."

Bottom line, Prince should make music that makes him happy, nothing else.

I like that nod

And I like what he gave me - a musical experience many cannot even imagine. Of course it would be nice if my friends appreciated him too or at least knew some correct information about him and I admit it can be frustrating at times but I try not to think about that too much because in my universe it doesn't really matter.

No. He doesn't need to change what he does just to appease some snot-nose kids who don't even know quality music when they hear it. He's made his money, doesn't need to whore himself out to the Miley Cyrus/Jonas Bro crowd to be popular.

I don't think Prince should change for no one. What makes him a great artist and possibly he greatest musician this world has ever seen. Is the simple fact that he does what he wants when he wants. My only regret is that I grew up on michael jacksons music and only discovered prince when his rave un2 the joy fantastic came out. Since then I been to 2 concerts and have everysingle album and been a member of all his Internet ventures. Lotusflow3r is absolutely amazing. If people want to discover prince they will and they will fall in love with his music. I respect the man and his way of conducting himself besides we as fams are constantly spoiled. What other artist gives you a new album almost every year? And he just keeps getting better! I am the webmaster of www.jacksonplanet.net check out the website. Also check my great music section out and see my take on prince. We as fams are the ones that spread the word! The only thing though I think is that he should allow his videos to be on you tube as it allows people to discover him and also see that he still makes great music. So I think we should let him be! In his own words "once I got you, you are mine!" my name is Prince and I am funky! The true Don of music!

Prince shouldn't worry about pandering to 15 year-olds to try and stay on the charts. He's doing just fine without them. Would just be pointless, pathetic, and sad.

He's reached a point in his career where he has the rare luxury to be able to play and record what he wants and still be considered a legend. He should continue to take advantage of that and chart his own path.

It exists.

if you hate hip hop so much dont listen it

Try escaping it. Turn on the TV Guide channel to see the chart of upcoming shows, shit hop is either playing or being talked about at the top of the screen. Watch a television show that has nothing to do with shit hop, a commercial comes on, what's in it, shit hop. Watch a talk show or even a sitcom, shit hop slang, references, fashions, and attitude fill the show. Simply walk down the street, shit hop blasting from cars. As I said, try to escape it, you can't so make the best of the situation. If there's no music to entertain you musically, entertain yourself by shitting on it.

and leave the music for someone who enjoys it which is a majority of young people all over the globe

And that's the problem.

and usually most people who do hate this particular brand of music hates or has something against blacks

So you've read so many of my posts huh? Well, apparently you haven't read enough because if you had, you would know that my main love is funk, hardcore, not watered down, not crossover, pure ass shakin' funk and furthermore 90 percent of my friends since 1979 have been black and 80 percent of my lovers also. So to say that I have something against black people because I hate shit hop is rediculous. And even though the majority of shit hop artists are black, I considered shit hop as white music because the majority of the consumers are white and back when black music was funk, rap, and hip hop (the days before shit hop) and the majority of it's consumers were black, it was never dull like it has been for the last 15 years. If you had read so many of my posts like you say you have or been into threads of stuff that actually do like, you would know that.

not all hip hop is bad and you limit yourself to just american brand mainstream rap music and get the conception "oh shit hop this and shit hop that" you can rant and bitch about it all you want but "shit hop" as you call isnt going any where for now

No not all hip hop is bad. There's where you don't get it. Shit hop is not hip hop. I invented the term shit hop when hip hop became shit. No, early 80s hip hop is great and some late 80s also. After that 90 percent of it is shit hop. And yes, I know it's not going anywhere and that's the problem. But just like it's not going anywhere, neither am I. Both me and shit hop exists in this world and since it invades my life all over the TV, radio, and on the streets and there's no good new music being made because of it, yes, I'm going to bitch and going to continue to bitch. And if I don't want to buy Prince's next album because he sold out on this last one, that's my choice so why should it matter to you if I don't buy it or voice my reason for not buying it? That's a way of protest and more people should do it. Make him feel it in the pocketbook and he'll stop selling out.

and maybe in the future like 20 years from now we might get some brand new type of music like new techno/funk/rap or something lol

Why should we wait 20 years. We've already waited 20 years and no style change. In the past, styles have changed around every five years until shit hop came along. But no, it's probably not going anywhere for another 50 years. "Cheap" never goes away.

If he's ever successful with the kids (which I doubt), that's exactly what will happen. No artist these days is going to change today's music, today's music is going to change the artists. Almost every older singer or group that puts out a new album sells out. Cameo held out as long as they could making jams in the 1990s until they finally did a sellout album in the late 90s. The Gap Band made a sellout album in the 1990s. The Barkays held out for a long time and kept jamming and when the 2000s came, they sold out on not one, but two albums. Charlie Wilson, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson on "Invicible", hell even Rick James finally sold out on his final album. Prince is the only one that still makes jams and even he has sold old on particular tracks. And how could I forget The Isley Brothers. They became the biggest sellout of all, a complete disgrace to the great group they used to be.

Yeah, Prince could sell out and maybe have a minor hit or two but he'll never be big again simply for the image in today's music. It's extremely homophobic and they will never accept someone that looks like Prince because they are complete idiots. But as I've said before, if this is the audience Prince wants, he can have them and see how long they keep him. But once he gets them temporarily, he doesn't need to come back crying to his old fans that left him when the little juvenille deliquents brand him as a "fag" and say silly shit like he "ain't no real nigga" and all that type of bullshit. He's got a loyal fanbase already but if he wants to jeapardize it, hey go for it.

This thought popped in my head years ago when I first heard "Supercute"..this could be on the radio..I see the nice video, promoted right (supercute Internet contest) and yadda yadda. But then it hit me,that's not what HE wants. He has reached that point in his career to do what he feels musically and whoever digs him cool,no matter the age.The youth will have their own megastars, like we have ours.Let nature run its course and enjoy him and feel privlidged

AMEN BROTHA! "hip Hop" has went down the toilet since the early 90's. I have tried in every way to find some form of true "art" in it, and its just impossible. The lyrics, the so called music, the look...its just horrible. I gotta give em credit where its due though... They have found a way to become millionares without portraying any intelligence, style, respect, morals, or talent. Yes, Prince has had his not so impressive moments, but his great moments outshine his bad by a HUGE margin.

As always you have a point, but Prince has been into hip-hop for years, he wrote I feel 4 U, one of the biggest hip-hop/rap/pop/rnb cross-over tracks ever ... so he's never been out of the "game" . I agree MPLsound is aimed at the radio/charts ... but on that CD he does produce the magic...

Dance 4 Me, Valentina, Better With Time, and Ol' Skool Company is a typical prince type track.... more 90's than 00's

2004 taught me a lot about the mass media in the U.S. and what it is for a rock star to be "famous" or "popular" or "hot".

Basically, whenever Prince plays ball with the mass media, becomes more visible, and promotes himself...he is "popular". More people, in general, have Prince on the brain and are talking about him, buying his albums, going to his shows etc.

Prince wasn't doing anything differently artistically, he just was more media friendly that year (and has been in the years since.)

I am a high school teacher. From 2004 onwards, my students have been a lot more interested in Prince.

On one hand, it's very cool to see that. On the other, it's a bit sad to see that it is basically television/media telling people what is "cool" and what to like. It wasn't really anything Prince was doing other than being willing to be "sold" to the masses...

Did that dude say he invented the term "Shit Hop"?..Gtfo..unless he lived in the northeast back in the 80s and 90's.That's what we used to call southern hip hop because they were behind in delivery and production. But I don't think the maker of this thread was talking about Prince spitting a hot 16 bars to get the youth.I think he meant promotion and availability.

Prince should keep on doing what he's doing. A large amount of the youth of today lack the taste for real music from real musicians. The lack of music programs in schools lends greatly to this problem. One can only hope as this generation of kids grows older that they will expand their tastes and explore new/different artists othger than the MTV/BET/VH1 selection they've been bombarded with. there's a world of great music out there and with time most people discover more about it each and every day.

i totally agree with you about the kids being bombarded by the videos on mtv, bet, and vh1. i don't know what happened to these channels and why they are producing so much crap! it's actually up to us as parents, guardians, family members and friends to make sure that the kids are getting a broader spectrum of music and to let them listen to older music including rap. all the music now is such garbage and it's teaching them nothing. lil wayne is on top and he's saying he wants to have sex with every girl in the world and now he has two girls pregnant at the same time and lauren london just had a baby by him not too long ago. i hope i got that right cause it's just too much! i think it's the singer nivea and an unknown college student. condoms have been in mass production since 1900 and what?

besides, his music is "reserved" for mature minds (if u know what i mean wink )

Did that dude say he invented the term "Shit Hop"?..Gtfo..unless he lived in the northeast back in the 80s and 90's.That's what we used to call southern hip hop because they were behind in delivery and production. But I don't think the maker of this thread was talking about Prince spitting a hot 16 bars to get the youth.I think he meant promotion and availability.

Southern hip hop in the 1980s? I can't think of any except for some of the groups from Miami such as 2 Live Crew and that type stuff. And that stuff was jammin'.
