Music and Words

Hello this is my first topic here! I was just listening to "Play in the Sunshine" & suddenly it occured to me just how good Prince is at writing words that fit the music perfectly. Anybody can write a song about seagulls and encoperate seagull sound effects into it, but to have the melody and arrangement of a song that matches the words perfectly despite there being no specefic sounds that relate to the theme of Playing in the Sunshine is amazing to me.

Another example of this is "Thunder", the song just epitomises the energy and anger of Thunder & Lightning despite there being no sounds that actually relate to either! Genius!

So what songs do you think are a perfect match, lyrics & music wise? & Are there any songs Prince has done where you thought the lyrics & music clash? For me even though "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" is one of my favourite Prince tunes, the lyrics put a big downer on the music... mad

One Nite Alone (the song). To me the lyrics, delivery and music are perfectly complimentary to each other.

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker and Joy In Repetition are also great examples of his songwriting craft.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Nice topic. Just taking one recent song for now, where music and lyrics match.

I'd say Love like jazz is perfect. The music is playful, unpredictable and sexy. Your mind can go many places. The words are perfect too. Unpredictable. You're waiting to hear what he's going to say or suggest. It kind of rolls you without the rock and throws in some little stars here and there. His voice is soothing and then the run into 77 Beverley Park is just brilliant.

Kind of angry beat...bit dark, Pink "Floydy" ... like driving through a dark tunnel and then all of a sudden you wake up on an island in Greece. It's perfect, you've just arrived in heaven razz cool cool cool! But of course there's no words in this one cool also makes it extra special.

Pop Life!

Especially that "river" part - you hear the keys sounding like flowing water in the background after he sings that line.
