Prince songs & family/personal moments?

A recent thread [http://prince.org/msg/7/319702] mentions Prince songs for first dances at weddings.
What other personal events have connected with a Prince song for you?

I'll share 2 of mine. I had a baby 7 months ago.
In the womb, we sang "Free" to him every day. When he was born, he totally recognized the song. We still sing it to him, to calm him down. "Free" is his song.

Second - when I put the baby to sleep, I usually sing him "Slow Love". Not exactly kiddie-content, but the sounds are beautiful and relaxing. So Slow Love is the sleep song for us.

Congratulations on your son! Nice story.

I learnt to play my first C#m, Db & Ebm on the Piano when learning "money don't matter" back in 1996. It's now one of my favourite chords apart from the diminisheds. That Ebm prompted me to get into jazz, though it took some time. I can't read music as I've never had lessons, I play by ear and improvisation.

In 1990, I was travelling a lot and undergoing some serious cultural shocks. Pop life was a great form of comfort & so was Money don't matter. I had just made a complete A-Z life change "making sure my soul was alright" so it fitted perfectly to my life. razz

"free" i love that song but...

I grew up in a real turbulant family atmosphere...full of violence, arguments.

I first watched the movie puple rain when i was 3...and i could relate to
the kid...even that young.

When ever i hear "doves cry" i refer it to the song of my life caus i relate 2 it in every way possible...

as i said in the wedding thread, i have memories of dancing with my pop to D&P at my wedding. he passed away 2 yrs later, so it was pretty special.

D&P was released around the time i started going out with my now husband, a lot of songs have significant memories for us wink
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret

In 1996 I was living in Thailand. My Australian friend had a pumpkin house, a very groovy, round orange pumpkin house! When she left she threw a party and I heard this song that I fell in love with but never did anything about it. For years I have thought of that song but I had no idea of the name, words or artist, only the tune.

A few weeks ago, I watched a YT Prince interview where he spoke about chem-trails. The next video that popped up was a short documentary about it. And guess what the theme song was razz

Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb from a Ministry of Sound cd. So now I have this song after ALL that time. Not a Prince song but had I not watched the interview....

I don't know if it's the sort if thing you mean but Gett Off changed my life.

I went to an all boys school where, On the second day, somebody started a false rumour I was gay....which is the worst thing to be at an all boys school. For 3 years I was a social leper who got beat up on a regular basis both in and out of school...all because if a stupid little false rumour which started on the 2nd day of school (as if starting secondary school wasn't hard enough).

In the 3rd year a new guy started school. This guy made an amazing choice, because we discovered we both liked Prince and Gett Offwas out at the time, he 'chose' to side with me instead of taking the easy route and being friends with the 'hard' kids. From there he became the best friend I have ever known, we were inseparable, got into so many scrapes, laughed, cried and all the while he took shit for knowing me.

We went our seperate ways for what seemed like good about 10 years ago when he came to visit me at university and we had a big argument after he did some unreasonable things - my GF at the time told him where to go and he went.

I guess I thought that perhaps, like eachothets ' guardian angels' ( if you like) perhaps it wad meant to be as we'd taken eachother as far ad we could go and it was time to go our seperate ways. I got on with my life, got married, new friends, a house had a son and, although I wondered what he was upto all the time, accepted that our time was done and I wouldn't see him again.

After 10 years without speaking we've just got back in touch with eachother and in looking forward to meeting up with him soon for some food and a catch up.

Without Gett Off who knows where or IF I would be - after 3 years of daily beatings I was having some VERY dark and final thoughts.

So here's to BRJ
