can anyone confirm if that Tamar album is genuine - I know copies were pressed in Japan but these versions that have been up for sale on ebay have videos or the audio of the Prince/Tamar performance on the brits awards as a bonus - doesn't sound right.....

I can't vouch for this guy http://prince.org/msg/9/318854 with the Milk And Honey CD (the photo seems correct, though is it a photo of what he is actually selling? I guess I would inquire further). Anything with "bonus" stuff is usually a red flag that it's a counterfeit.

For instance, the Goldnigga with the 2gether mixes is a fake.

hmmm Thats actually quite a low buy it now price for that cd it's gone for much more than that in the past.

I have most of the officially released albums. The only ones I still don't own physical copies of are The Truth, Kamasutra, ONA piano disc, Goldnigga, and Exodus.

(I'm not counting stuff like C-Note, and Chocolate Invasion and so on as those never had a physical release to begin with).

you've not listed Crystal Ball but you don't have The Truth? they were together were they not? mine is, wish i got the Karmasutra version of it though!

Well, at least you got it cheap. The artwork on counterfeits can be quite good. I bought a fake Apollonia 6 CD (I knew what I was buying - these are usually manufactured in Canada) because the prices for a legit CD are pretty high. I'm always on the lookout for the real deal, though if I can get it at a reasonable price.

True, but what category does that put it in then? The same as the Black Album was before it was officially released in '94?

The category would be: Rare. The 1987 Black Album was released and withdrawn.

Actually, it was never officially released in 1987. It was due for release on December 8th. I got mine on Dec 2nd, which was the supposed "official" date it was pulled.

I always understood it that it made it to stores, but was pulled before it was put on shelves, like what happened to the first release date of Prince Ultimate. So you're saying it was leaked from the pressing plants or distributor?

Yeah i got both the Apollonia 6 and Mazarai counterfeits but unfortunately paid for them not knowing they were, from ebay (£50 ($75) each), they're really good the only thing that gives it away is the blank card in the middle of the insert.

Nope... never made it to the stores. And likely one or both of the latter is where the authentic versions originated.

Oh... and for the record... any album which was never 'officially released by the distributor is illegal if sold or distributed by other parties. Though not necessarily bootlegs.... 'Authentic' is more descriptive than 'rare' for some albums. (though usually authentic versions in these cases are also rare)

Prince told WB to pull it and the official "its pulled" was only 6 days before release. It was at that point the order went out to destroy the copies that had been printed up over the previous 8 days.

The album didn't actually have a mass first run as it was being released under cover by "somebody".

But inevitably, with 6 days to go, alot of copies were already in the hands of distributors and management. they were recalled, but WB didn't make a great effort because they were pissed off.

I got mine from the local rep. When P pulled it, he said, you may as well enjoy this, it'll probably be re-scheduled for January. The WEA rep was the guy who (in those days) did the rounds to the record stores every week and dropped off the latest WEA stock. I was such a Prince nut I would meet him at his car and help him carry his weekly stock to my local store. My reward was he always gave me all his promo displays and music.
