MUSICOLOGY VS MPLSOUND

Two albums this decade albums haved appeared to be definitive attempts by Prince to recapture the signature Minneapolis/Prince sound. Which do you believe is the strongest record?

musicology might be stronger all around due to the three ballads along with hey valentina that clog up the middle of mplsound

but in my opinion the stronger songs on mplsound are better than the stronger songs on musicology.

so i prefer mplsound.

No disrespect, but can we all stop comparing and asking people whats better? It seems like we just want to make a simple thread to get our/your name shown. Most of the threads in this forum is asking your top 5 or vs questions.

I'd have to agree with "Musicology," being the record that I enjoy more between the two of them, however, appreciating everything can sometimes on this website turn into fine defined lines.

I also feel that "MPLSound" is a little jumpy. It doesn't matter when shuffling songs because that is what we are expecting. cool

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

To me, Musicology is well rounded Prince. It gives you a glimpse into his past work. MPLSOUND doesn't.

It's funny how when Musicology first came out it couldn't get love if Jesus Christ Himself sang on it. Now, it's being looked back on as a nod to "classic Prince" or well-rounded?? Are we listening to the same album? Granted, when it first came out, I liked about 2-3 songs off it, but I found it pretty bland. Most of the Org couldn't even find THAT much to like about it. Now, it's gettin' props. Weird. Is it aging better than some of his other albums (3121 was a marked improvement/step up from Musicology, IMO)?

As far as this "comparison", they both can take a long walk off a short pier, though I do find Musicology is slightly less nausea-inducing than MPLSound!

I actually love the 2000's for Prince releases; I think he was more consistent than he had been in the 90's. I also think Musicology is his strongest release from this decade. I love this CD (The Rainbow Children is a close second).

So my vote goes to Musicology.

I like both albums very, very much, but Musicology just seems to be a bit deeper for me - musically, lyrically, feeling-wise.

It is one of my favourite Prince albums overall.

I have not listened to MPLSound for more than six times - I'm serious. And I really, really, really love Musicology.

I guess I need to listen to MPLSound a lot more to answer this question lol But Musicology has "Reflection" and you just can't beat that disbelief

i agree with that. although, "reflection" is one of my all time fav
prince songs still, so that's the exception for me.

but both albums feel less than the sum of their good parts. they're
both weighed down by songs that simply don't work for me.

they both have a few songs that, although certainly not bad songs,
are amongst those rare examples of prince songs i just don't care
to listen to ever again after the first few spins.

i can see why you'd want to make this thread and chose those two
albums. and the answer is quite hard, actually.

neither of these will ever rank in my top 10 or even top 20 favorit
prince albums. yet they both contain a few songs that i could never
do without anymore.

if i had to had to had to pick one, i would have to pick Musicology
musicology. simply based on "reflection" which is such a gem, even
in prince's vast catalogue.

why would i want a glimps into his past when i have already seen it anyway? It makes sense to move forward and see new things.

Mplsound. Its new and all the way through killer.

I won't disagree about 3121 at all, but I do love both album.

I have always acknowledged my liking of Musicology. You are right, though, that a lot of people didn't like it.

I say Musicology is "well rounded" only because the album covered everything that made Prince who he was up until 2004. You had sensual music, rock, pop, r&b, and songs about social issues.

I like Musicology for the "idea" of getting back to the basics of music and I like MPLSound for the going back to the drum machine and the more electronic sound.
Love em both. Lean towards Musicology probably because of the tour.

As some others have said: I love both albums but MPLSoUND's Linn Drum takes you back to the Purple Rain Era of P's music. There's a different vibe about both albums. Musicology was a great tour and the album complimented the tour but MPLSoUND is a throw back sound, to say the least which I like very much. cool

If you took all the songs I love from Musicology and put them together with all the songs I love from MPLSound...you'd pretty much have just an EP.

Sad but true. confused
