I was annoyed at myself for buying "Around The World In A Day". It had potential to be a great album but lacks that infamous coherence razz

some find the narrative voice or narration itself annoying, but this album stands as one of his greatest.

N.E.W.S. Structureless and tedious. Fortunately it wasn't a normal Prince album with 10-12 songs that wanted serious attention. Other than that I like all of Prince's albums, even albums like Newpower Soul and Chaos & Disorder, that a lot of people on here don't like.

Numero uno: The Rainbow Children

Awfull, irritating dogmatic lyrics, annoying darth vader voice, the more organic instrumentation doesnt hide the fact he is not really doing anything new on the album (and that most of the songs arent that great in terms of songwriting). And, oh yes, I hate that kind of seventies fusion / jazz-rock thing (Chick Corea, Weather Report), so definitely not my record.

Number 2: MPLsound
Just because he uses the Linn and early eighties sounding synths, doesnt mean that the music on this album can compare with the quality of the original Minneapolis Sound. His drum programming is way trite, like he is not even trying to create something that is interesting in creative terms, songs like Never be another one like me and Chocolate Box sound like outtakes the Black Eyed Peas dont even dare to release officialy, Old skool company simply plods alone like Come on from the New Power Soul album, no surprises, nothing that really challenges you as a listener. Valentina and Dance 4 me reek like juvenile child dance-pop. I could go on a while like this... lol

3 and 4: New Power Soul / Rave
Talking about underachieving... New Power Soul is mostly generic, bland plastic sounding dance-pop / 'funk': songs he could write in his sleep, and record on autopilot. The acoustic ballads on Rave (Tangerine, I love you but i dont trust you anymore) have charm, but the rest of the music is mostly Prince going through the motions. Meant to be a comeback album, but you can clearly hear his mind, heart and soul is not into it.
I have never bothered to buy these two albums. I guess, that shows how much i 'care' about them...

5. Come
I know some people here really dig this album, but to me its the album that made me loose my real interest in Princes music for a long period.
It sounds like he very quickly picked some outtakes from his vault, and finished some halfbaken demo's, just to get rid of his contractual obligations.
I know the same was probably the case with Chaos and Disorder and The Vault, but at least these albums showed playing pleasure: on these 2 obligational records the NPG made me share in their excitement, not all the songwriting might have been great, but their attempts at simply playing raw rock (Chaos and Disorder) and more traditional blues and jazz (The Vault) without too many pretentions worked infectious.
When it comes to Come I mostly hear very weak songwriting / compositions, and a production that is on autopilot andnd unexciting. I bet there are dozens of 'songs' like Space, Pheromone and Race to be found in the vault. I also can understand why these songs remain inside the vault... lol

1) Rainbow Children - songs 1 -14 is the problem there
2) chaos and disorder - the names fits

I have never heard the Gold Aggin album. I don't know why

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Let me say this. For Prince during that time after complaining about the freedom, being a slave, etc. You were expecting EVERYTHING he did to be awesome, even a throw away album. Like emancipation could have been cut down to 2 lps and been much better.
