1987: How much is Prince Spoiled? Hi y’all,
From Zinzi’s Prince’s High Heels thread, I remembered this 1987 Hitkrant article. I gave it a quick translation. Please have a read and enjoy the total mix of fact and fiction on Prince’s stay in 1987 (probably for his Birmingham rehearsals)

British photographer did make his way into Clifford Manor, the temporary residence of Prince in England. He spoke to buttler Craig Chapman, who witnessed Prince from very close and he took some exclusive pictures… The toll of fame seems to be tough for Prince. Anxiously he protects his private life from the outside world and he rarely gives interviews. He also tries to – where ever he stays – to prevent himself from fans and overactive journalists following him. When his accommodation is known, he is able to keep people on a distance or to mislead. Like when he stayed in the Amsterdam Sonesta Hotel. He arranged several cars to be ready. When people thought he would leave with that one, he appeared to had left already with an other. To have some space, Prince rented a country cottage. The mansion Clifford Manor is located in the village of Clifford Chambers in Warwickshire. This estate has 36 rooms and can be rented by anyone. That is if you can afford the rent of ƒ 50.000 for a week. For Prince this temporary accommodation was not fulfilling yet. Before his arrival, he wanted all 36 rooms furnished anew, as if it was the same as his American house. Eventually this seemed not possible, Prince accepted a refurnish of his master bedroom. Prince slept on a mattress on the floor. 24 year old buttler Craig Chapmann tells: “He insisted on removing the four-poster bed. He would feel looked up in that. I asked him what kind of bed he would have then. He told me to lay a mattress on the floor. The room had to be in his favourite colours turquoise and peach. We replaced everything: the carpets, the curtains, chairs, everything! In my opinion Prince felt insecure and that he desperately wants to run away from his fame, by acting like a spoiled kid. Everyone around him treats him as a child. They all nurture him. And he expects that from them. His bodyguard Gilbert, 1,9 meter tall and a circumference of chest of about a meter and a half, he follows him 24 hours a day as if he were his shadow.” Craig Chapman also told that the superstar is often quiet and introvert. He would then be alone in his room watching Queen videos. “Prince fears several things”, the buttler continues his story. “His biggest fear is to get old. Therefore he takes hours to apply body lotions. His cosmetics arrived in two large trunks.” To stay in shape Prince trained with weights. One room was rearranged into a mini fitness room. He does not worry about his shape. He mostly lives on pasta, popcorn, white wine en lemon tea with honey. He does not have a regular night rest. One moment a shabby individual exited the royal suite. “If Prince wakes up at around three or four in the night everyone has to wake up and do what he wants,” buttler Graig tells. All together an impressive list of bizarre habits, but there’s more. “Prince always wears thin silk Pierre Cardin boxer shorts and –socks and after wearing them exactly 12 hours he throws them away, that easy!” Now we understand why he needs several truck to transport his wardrobe. On top of that, Prince brought a lady for the ironing of all his clothes. Buttler Graig was completely flabbergasted when one day a a shabby, unshaven individual exited the royal suite. “This person waswearing a wide, much too big overcoat, a cap and a pair of ramshackled glasses, had greasy hair and a two-day beard. Just when I wanted to ask him what he was doing in Prince’s room, I noticed his high heeled shoes. It wàs Prince. Unrecognisable. He disguised himself to go to a Stratford pub. After his return he got a kick from telling that nobody in the pub had recognised him! In the meantime Clifford Manor is all quite again. The bedroom was redecorated again, to the old style. Nothing relates to the ten days the bizarre Prince stayed at the royal mansion… At the pictures: In this room Prince sat alone for hours watching Queen videos A peek into the provisional set up fitness room for the tiny Prince. thats cool. Queen videos?? didnt know prince liked queen. He is a heath freak and insomniac, nothing much new here. u sure this story is from 87? it looks like its from 1990. [Edited 8/18/09 6:06am] | |

yeah, most definitely from '87. Besides, his clothing does not look nineties-ish, does it?
Maybe he got inspired by the Queen stage performances, if it is true what the buttler said... | |
