PRINCE- COME

What an Incredible F****ING ALBUM!!! Just listening to it now, one of his best from the 90's. Loose has gotta be a contender for one of his greatest rock jams. I love u prince.

That makes sense. That is essentially the way I feel about Musicology.

There was a time where I really loved this album (Come). My enthusiasm for it has surely waned over the years. Now, I tend to listen to Come, Space, and Dark and skip the rest of the songs.

Definitely one of his most underrated albums. I've been listening to it like crazy lately.

Space especially.

The videos all have that same cohesive vibe. "Loose" was actually a pretty hot video too.

A great album that is definitely undervalued by many. I could go on and on about it.... in fact I have, lol. Check out my in depth track by track review of COME at http://prince.org/msg/7/312759

And COME and lend your thoughts to the discussion.

It's a very good album, but I've always felt it suffered from the fall out
between Prince and WB, as several strong tracks were dropped from it before
release. It's kinda 2/3's the album it could and should've been.

I always loved the original Come/Endorphinmachine/Space sequence, and felt it
was a great pity when this trio of perfectly segued tracks was abandoned.

I always thought it had a moody serious tone to it, black albumish. good album apart from the pretentious 'solo'.

the albums suffers most, imo, from having no real striking book ends.
the opening track is cool but simply too slow and too long to be that
cool first track on an album. orgasm isn't even a real song and it's
a bad and kind of tasteless end to a great disc of music.

with slightly different sequencing this could have been equally good
as "the gold experience". well, in most regards i think it is just as
good, except that the gold experience has a better beginning and a
more defined end sequence of songs.

without taking any songs from the gold experience as it is now, what
songs would fit well on Come to make it more solid? or what tracks
were on the test pressings again? wasn't interactive on it? and what
about "what's my name?"

i'm thinking something like:

01. Poem : Interactive
02. Come
03. Space
04. Pheromone
05. Loose!
06. Papa
07. What's My Name?
08. Race
09. Dark
10. Solo
11. Letitgo
12. Strays of the World

Imago

I listened to it yesterday because of this thread and....

It fared much better than did originally back when I last listened to it in its entirety (which is back in 1993-ish lol ).

But I think the problem with COME is a complex one to me. At that time I was really into electro bands like Front 242, Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Eb, and Skinny Puppy. COME was a radical shift from Prince's almost live sounding NPG albums (real drums, complex arrangements) to an electronic sounding one. But unlike the bands I was listening to, the electronic parts of COME mostly sounded like a lazy afterthought. It also seems the mix was lazy or at least hasty.
It's a fun album and the songs/melodies are good--but the ones that could have been (and were) singles are very by-the-numbers. I mean, PM Dawn could have sung all those songs.

I was in Germany at the time listening to other types of music, and I didn't have cable T.V. nor was the Internet available back then. So, I had no clue about the symbol nonsense that would become the focus of his life and art for the 90s. All I knew was I had bought the first Prince album in ages, that after repeated plays, I simply didn't like.

When I hear it now, I rather like it. It's at least on par with most of his recent work (Except lotusflow3r and MPLSound)--which may not be a good thing. lol

The strange thing is that almost every song on this CD had a video(except for Solo and Dark) and it wasn't promoted. The Beautiful Experience with Nona Gaye fit perfectly with this album and the Gold Experience.

This is almost exactly the sequence I use for my version of "Come."

I put "What's My Name" before "Papa" and I don't use Poem or Orgasm at all (and I don't include Interactive.) I add "Pope" right after "Race"... works really well for me. And I use a custom edit I did of "Come" which is basically just the album version faded out.

I also snipped the ending keyboards from the album version of Come and added them to the beginning of "Space" so it's not such an abrupt start.

And I close with Strays of the World as well.

Great album.

Come seems to be one of those Prince-albums you either love or hate / dislike a lot, there seems to be no middleground... lol

Personally i find it one of his weakest albums ever and i still don't get why some here rate it so high.

Apart from Papa, Dark and Letitgo the songwriting is very mediocre. Space and Pheromone for example are pisspoor compositions.

The execution of the songs is on auto-pilot. Prince sounding bored most of the time. A song like Race sounds like something he could write in his sleep and that would end up in the Vault anyway.

Loose shows how far out of touch he was with the dance-music of his time. He is attempting a kind of techno-song, that allready was 5 years out of style at the moment.

And whats with the annoying 'slurping sounds' on the title track. You would think he had grown up since Do Me Baby?

The album is barely saved by the three songs i mentioned, but still i cant give it more then a 5 out of 10.

I am with you.

With / after Come my interest towards his musical career became very lacklustre.

Despite several 'gems' on each album from the first halve of the nineties, i allready thought he was 'slipping away' as an album-artist.

Come was so unbelievably weak as an album, that it made me think: screw it, why should i focus on / put my faith into your music any longer, when there is so much great music around by other artists?

I have never felt real 'magic' for any new Prince album since then.
