Prince's New Music

Prince's new music does get better with time. I'd say the new stuff is superior to the stuff in the 80's. What's your thoughts?

No offense taken. But don't get me wrong, I live in the present. "In A Large Room With No Light" is an excellent song & direction for Prince. The only question is. "When you gonna show Detroit some Love" peace and stay blessed.

He wrote it in the 80's. But the new version is superior.

I'd say that his new stuff is far superior than most of the output from the 90's. And I'd say the latest two disks rival the stuff from the 80's, but i'm not sure I'd say its necessarily superior.

I definitely appreciate his musicianship more today however.
Change it one more time..

If you think "Chocolate Box" is superior to "Erotic City", you're on some motherfuckin' crack.

I love his new music, esp 3121 and Lotusflower. I've stopped comparing eras because they are simply very different albums, then and now. He was a different artist in the 80's and I'm glad he doesn't go back to that sound very often(Mplsound being an exception). I'd even add that he was a very different artist from the early 80's to the late 80's. His sound changed so much from Dirty Mind thru Lovesexy.
The best part of Lotus is the clear voice and brilliant musicianship on the album. I've said this before, but it reminds me of Small Club(1988) in it's breathtaking guitar work and performance, and still a very new sound.

Interesting. Hard to compare era's I agree. I don't think his new stuff is far less superior than in the 80's but we have the benefit of hindsight and can easily list classics from his earlier work, because they have stood the test of time. This music hasn't been given that chance yet. I love where his music is now. I look forward to each album, release. Even though I bought all of his albums in the 80's and 90's I don't think that music was as accessible as the new stuff. If you cobbled together the real gems from this era..I think they would fair well with any of the previous versions of Prince (Purple Rain album withstanding) Now there is no debating that his outtakes are of much higher quality than say some of the NPGMC one off releases. But if you just look at released albums scale tends to balance more often than not.

Oh boy, a new can of worms has been opened.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I agree with you. I also stopped comparing eras because one of the eras will lose in the comparisons. Why not just enjoy the music for what it is as opposed to how it used to be? I just take it for where Prince is in 2009 and I either enjoy it or I don't and luckily for me, I love it, I really do. Prince still does it for me like he did for me in 1989.

nope.

I really like some of his very recent stuff, but in what way do you think it is 'better' than his 80s output? In terms of songwriting, production, vocals, musicianship?

I'd say you might have an argument for the very last of the above, but only that one.

I strongly disagree. His 80s music was magical and is a powerful testament to his greatness. Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain etc. It hurts to say this but I don't think he'll ever make another album with the same level of quality as those ones.

nod Me, too. I guess I'm lucky, but I feel like he's evolved and progressed with me thru most of my life. I loved the overt sexuality when I was younger, especially when I was a teen. But I got older and look at the world much differently now- and so does Prince. I like his new perspective on life, it's not mine, but I don't want it to be.
My best friend and I are very much the same way. We have completely different lifestyles-he's vegetarian and very artistic, I eat fastfood and would rather go to a park with my kids than attend an art show, but we both grow and learn from eachother.

I guess I don't what you mean by "quality", as it's really a matter of taste to the listener. In some ways, his music and themes in the 80's were really 2 dimensional when you compare it to TRC, Lotusflower or 3121. I love the early 80's albums, but Lotusflower goes deeper, the guitar on Boom and Colonized Mind comes from a different place.

I'd say that your name says it all. Also, are you trying to start controversy with that statement? I know we are entitled to our opinions but that is really stretching it. His new stuff is fluff, nothing memorable as anything he did in the 80's.

the sad story is that prince will never be as good as he was in the 80s,it was his time and he was at the height of his musical creativity, its the same with every artist, stevie wonder could never top his previous albums after hotter than july,mj with bad, springsteen with born in the usa, bowie with his lets dance period, george micheal with faith, just appreciate that he is still making music with some albums being better than others, atleast he is making better music than the 90s and he can still out perform any living artist on this planet when he plays live,of course we should critisize prince and his music when it is deserved but please lets accept the fact that he will never top anything he did in the 80s.
