I get ur point, but let's face it...Emancipation hasn't aged well (to me at least). There are many gems on there, but some of the songs are just painful for me to listen to now.

Really, well what songs are painful??? I just want to know not to get into a argument but just want to know cause I simply love it. When it came out I thought that we would see so many videos made from so many of the songs because there were so many singles that could have been dropped like Sleep Around, White Mansion and so many others. Just wondering???

Here's my painful Emancipation list (it's rather short)
Da Da Da
The Love We Make
In This Bed I Scream
Friend Lover Sister Mother/Wife
Courtin' Time (album version....I prefer it live for some reason).

That's pretty much it. I know many like "In This Bed I Scream". It's not that I "hate" it, but it doesn't appear on my hard drive anywhere, nor do the others.

big White mansion, mr happy, in this bed I scream, get yo groove on, soul sacturary, emale, curious child, the plan, style, the human body, new world, my computer, da da da, to name but a few, should never had made it onto any album.... let alone a prince one, ugh!!

To me, the songs you listed could have been edited differently than how they appeared on the album. Especially "Mr. Happy". I never cared for the rap, but the song is good.

To me, the thing with this album is Prince getting over his "bad relationship" with WB and falling in love with Mayte. A lot of the songs sound as if he was trying to tone down his anger that he had displayed on his previous projects over the last 3 or 4 projects. He was still in his dark period when he wrote most of the material and the music didn't have the joy that some of the later work did.

It's so interesting how Princes music appeals or repels.

For example I think Da Da Da sucks, I went back to The Love We Make after thinking it was pap and now it would be one of my 3 favourite songs on the whole thing. I always really liked In This Bed I Scream and I've never liked Friend Lover... and I think Courtin Time is cheese.

I think there are lots of mediocre songs on there

Jam Of The Year is so not. Right Back Here In My Arms - meh, Somebodys Somebody I like alot, Get Your Groove On - meh, White Mansion - meh, We Gets Up - meh. I like Betcha By Golly Wow - his vocals incredible / I know alot of people don't like it....and so on.

I guess you could always look at it like Prince just threw it out there and you can make your own compilation shrug

My only beef was it's promotion/hype as being the album he was 'born to make' and after all his tiresome battle with Warners this is what he was fighting to release??

He's hardly ever played any of these tracks live so I don't think he's that fond of them.

I can see how you would feel the way you do about the album. This was not the first (nor will be the last) time that an album was hyped and it doesn't live up to the expectation. I remember when Bobby Brown's first single from the "Bobby" album was added to radio (Humpin' Around) and Tom Joyner came on the radio asking "Is this what we waited for?" lol

Riverpoet31

Its a more polished take on a typical Prince power-ballad (Free, Purple Rain, Gold etc.).

Not bad (I especially love the guitarwork and screaming), but not a real classic either.

Ithink he never currently plays any of these songs b/c it brings up too many bad memories for him.For example he was going thru hard times with his former record label and he was falling in love more and more with a pregnant Mayte during this period of his life. Now Prince is not with her or with WB and their is no child.

It is also amazing to read how basically people r never satisfied with his music.

Ipersonally love Saviour and many other songs on Emancipation Cd.
