PRINCE...How many instruments exactly? OK!...guitar, bass, drums, keyboards...are the only things I've seen him play.
Never seen him play any wind / woodwind instruments / brass...no violins/ harps... So, what's all this 'he can play 17 instruments' business?!...are we sure we're not talking about 5 varieties of guitar?!!...6 types of drums...etc?! Or is it that he's so good on those instruments and seems infinitely creative, that we subconsciously like the idea of him playing more? I've only seen him 'live' once, so Prince .orgers to the rescue please!... peace [Edited 7/18/09 12:55pm]

lol
sometimes i think they mean each keyboard type-ie a clavinet , a rhodes piano, some folk seem to class this as 2 instruments-i's say-he plays keyboards-so one instrument and-i think they may not include percussion with drums-so congas, bongo's, handclapsandfingasnaps, timbales-the list could go on he does play what he plays rather well though-so who cares how many-care about how well

First of all just because u don't see prince playing any other instruments except piano or guitar doesn't mean he can't play other instruments. Kevin, Entertainment Tonite, host recently said that Prince played 26 instruments. He said that recently on Prince's birthday this year in June. peace [Edited 7/18/09 12:55pm]

Such as.. Acoustic guitar, 12 string acoustic guitar, Dobro guitar, Classical guitar, Electric guitar, Dog House bass. Acoustic Bass, electric bass. Piano, keyboard, and the list goes on and on. So yea, he probably does play 26 instruments.

That alone is at least 7-12 instruments.

It's just that people often press this point to emphasise the 'genius' aspect of him...and use it to downplay the 'genius' of other artists... ...and we shouldn't assume others can't play instruments either...James Brown could play keyboards and Michael Jackson could play drums & guitar (believe it or not!... his song D.S). ...yes kenlacam...(Mr. Patience)...i did a search... ...but for other posters, yeah I know what you're gonna say! peace [Edited 7/18/09 13:36pm]

patience not a factor. you must be a new Prince fan to ask that question though. The number of instruments has been greatly exaggerated, because of the keyboard instruments should all count as one instrument, not several. Plus, Google can work wonders:

That is the real question can all ofthe other artists listed above play instruments comfortably. Or is it an every day struggle. If it is a struggle than..... Just my 2 cents LOLOLOl

wikipedia:
Prince released his first major-label album, For You, on April 17, 1978. The majority of For You was written and performed by Prince, except for the song "Soft and Wet" (lyrics co-written by Moon). This was the first of Prince's albums containing the now ubiquitous legend: "Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince." Like most albums in his career, For You was recorded without a band; Prince reportedly played all 27 instruments on the album, though they were different types of string, percussion, and keyboard instruments. God, hopefully this will end the discussion.

I once read that the Saxophone was the only instrument that Prince has received formal training on but he gave it up in before high school. Anyone know the details?

MJ can't play a single instrument, he made contracts to have extra credits in his albums (a la Lauren Hill), but he wansn't a musician, his brothers say it so many times, the guy wanned to learn but he couldn't. "I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

Harpsichord (Question of U)
Drums (Gonna Be A Beautiful Night/SOTT Movie) Guitar Bass Piano Probably the rest are variations on these or obscure instruments we'd never think of. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
