why did the Beatles stuff go up for auction for MJ to purchase right from under McCartney's nose? Bonnie~ Michael bought the company that owned them, ATV Music. So they didn't put the songs up for auction per se. The bidding was for ATV. Now, I think he owns only 50% of it, and Sony owns the other half. At least that's the way I understood it. If I'm wrong I'm sure somebody'll tell me ASAP.  | |

That happened roughly 10 years ago. He was hard up for cash, and finally struck a deal with Sony to own half of it to generate some immediate cash for himself. He still spent WAY too much and now...if the numbers are correct, he's almost half-billion in debt as a dead man. | |

wow, i have so much to learn about the music business....lol
so when all these new artists are striking up deals to get noticed im sure plenty of them have no idea about owning rights and masters and such? or they are just willing to take anything to get known. makes for a rough industry and thats just the beginning, im sure! | |

What he did was inexcusable, but I don't think he saw it that way. Be that naivete, or just shrewd business sense. The "fairness" argument comes into play because MJ outbid Paul McCartney. Paul had the money to reciprocate and outbid Michael. He didn't. Michael did sell off half of it to Sony many years ago. |

good question ! that's half of a lifetime a fair number would be 10 years then again I don't know the logistics of what goes into the contracts. | |

I think it would be a disservice to future projects for Prince to re-visit and re-record his back catalog. I steered clear of the new 1999 version because it's just not the same imo it didn't age as well as the original. | |
