Prince, Anal Stimulation, Steve Jobs and Secrecy

Prince is secretive. There is no doubt about this. I’m not sure if this works in his favor or against, but it certainly makes his music more alluring at times.

But lyrically, he’s also amazingly candid. While Micheal Jackson was singing “Say Say Say what you want to say” you bet your ass Prince was doing just that; with lyrics like “I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth.” Could you imagine Prince's peers saying that? Madonna wasn’t even using lyrics that daring. Of course, it would be technically difficult for Madonna to do such a thing, lacking a penis herself unless she were to pull a 'Rosie O’donnel' kinky strap-on type of thing--but, singing those kind of high concept lyrics off can loose an audience, and Madonna was all about having a big audience.

Prince, on the other hand, during the 80’s, didn’t really care if he was selling records or not. Rather, he had something to say, and he said it. He’s wildly innovative lyrics allowed us to ponder both the spiritual and the anal. The holy and the profane. The church of the divine, and the temple of vagina. And he wasn’t going to give to flying fucks if Rolling Stone magazine recommended you buy his record or not.

Where Madonna was the flamboyant slut , boasting about her conquests, Prince was like the quiet little nympho that would pull your knickers and panties down, rip that punani apart, and run off wearing the afore mentioned knickers and panties. This. man. was. fierce.

In many ways he’s kind of like Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Co. Jobs is wildy innovative, prone to strange and frightening temper tantrums, and very prolific with new ideas. Owning far less market share than Microsoft (we can think of them as Madonna), Apple’s products are if anything, more innovative and higher in quality on average. Like Prince, if you’ve come into contact with Jobs, it’s likely you’ve been fucked hard. These men are both extremely driven.
But lastly, they are both secretive. Jobs has been known to leak false information and to withhold information from his own staff about upcoming products. The secrecy upon which they all work is astounding. One doesn’t have to think too hard to see the parallels with Apple and Paisley park.

The difference between Prince and Jobs though is that the secrecy around Apple builds up anticipation because Apple consistently delivers new and innovative products. It becomes a game to wonder what new features they’ll ull.

Prince has gone from innovation to a sort of cruise control. Albeit, his newest offering lotusflow3r is highly regarded, and in my opinion joining the ranks of some of his top 10 albums, his secrecy over the website and such didn’t help him in this case. This is due to the fact that when new Prince releases we literally have no clue if we’ll receive a quality product anymore.

Although I feel it hurts him by records sales, I have to admit, I like the fact that with Prince you never really know if genius is around the corner, or if he’s gonna drop something as ugly as a bucket of assholes. You just never know.

One thing is for sure; Prince takes chances.

Y'know...I was just thinking today (in the wake of Michael Jackson's unfortunate passing) about when and why I switched from being an MJ fan to being a Prince fan. And I realized that, while I grew up listening to Michael...by the time Prince came on the scene, I was an adult. And, as such, I was really drawn to his mystique and outré sexuality.

I mean...Dirty Mind wasn't something I was going to share with my 13-year-old sister. Because of the lyrics, obviously - but also because she'd never understand the music. Prince was nasty - and I was so ready for nasty. That was tremendously appealing.

The secrecy and mystery are what keep me coming back - even if I'm not always enthralled with Prince's output these days. (I'm still struggling with Planet Earth. disbelief ) I love that he seems to shun popularity and adulation - even as he grasps at it.

I'm not sure what his intentions were, but this seems plausible as one of the reasons, certainly. And if this is the case, it worked.

I remember reading, I believe in Rolling Stone magazine, an article back in the mid 80's with about why "Prince and Bruce Srpingsteen were hotter than Michael Jackson", and one of the reasons the magazine stated was that aside the audience's fatigue from MJ's overexposure during Thriller, they were also drawn to Prince and Bruce cause they were more 'adult'. Bruce's music more complex and Prince is music both more complex and lyrically....challenging lol
It was a good read.

HOWEVER, I think it was also a product of the times, and a way for Prince to garner attention. During the 80s, everyone had to have a gimmick. MJ had a single glove, Madonna dressed like a gypsy slut, Boy George was a hot Ghey-tto mess. Obviously Prince outdid many...A bi-sexual looking, 5'3, high heel wearing, mixed race looking, foul mouth, colonial ruffle-shirt lovin', musical genius who just so happened to call himself "PRINCE". I mean, it speaks volumes to Micheal Jackson's appeal during Thriller that he made the single glove iconic in ways Prince wasn't able to with his bikini/trenchcoat ensemble. But then again, showing up to school wearing a single glove wouldn't give a MJ fan quite the same heartache as showing up to school in a bikni/trenchcoat ensemble complete with high heels.

Also, and this is mere speculation on my part, it is entirely plausible Prince had enough insecurities to work through--one can see even today in his awful interviews how insecure he is. I personally could never see the guy pull off the genius interviews Lisa & Wendy pulled off a few weeks back. I may get shot for this but Prince could have been 'coming out' about his sexuality without ever having to come out. Let's face it, his lyrics are very explicit but often sexually ambiguous, and his delivery at times can be flat out gay feeling.

Whatever his reasons, we have a mountain of pure genius and about 5 to 10 percent of it happens to be explicit. It speaks more about our own human nature that 5 to 10 percent is what people focus and judge the whole of his work with.

I had read somewhere in another magazine article that Prince's being known for his sexually explicit lyrics only was a shame cause there was some real genius in his work (this was one released during the 80s too, back when I was actually interested in reading up on Prince).

worship Nice stuff all around.

This, to me, would be the focus of all the music critics interviewed were Prince the one we lost this week. It's understandable given the actual output over the years, that everyone focuses on MJ's Thriller era; stuck in the 80s. But with Prince, there are full 90's and 00's canons to pick from, regardless of how the individual rates their quality with respect to Purple Rain. There are enough songs through which to track Prince's artistic evolution or journey that for the retrospectives to focus on "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss" will just be lazy. Hopefully those few journalists who know the music will be able to craft pieces that actually show average music fans how lazy they've been in labeling Prince's work.

If he did it was self-defeating. Similarities would be harped on. Contrast would too. A trap really.
