For this summer's 25th anniversary of Prince's classic movie and album Purple Rain, SPIN is excited to announce the release of Purplish Rain, a tribute album made up of nine tracks commissioned by the editors of SPIN.

One very special note: Among the nine songs is a version of "When Doves Cry" performed by the Twilight Singers, featuring Apollonia, who costarred with Prince in the movie, and Greg Dulli -- check out SPIN.com's exclusive stream of the track below!

The entire album will be available as a free download for SPIN magazine readers and subscribers via SPIN.com starting June 23.

Purplish Rain was produced to accompany the July cover story, an oral history of Purple Rain, for which contributing writer Brian Raftery spoke to most of the key people involved in the creation of the movie and album.

While being interviewed for the cover story, Apollonia mentioned that she had performed Prince songs with Greg Dulli, the ex-Afghan Whigs frontman who's also recorded with Mark Lanegan as the Gutter Twins. She then contacted Dulli about covering a Prince track for SPIN's tribute.

"It was a fun challenge," says Dulli. "I can guarantee you that what we do sounds nothing like what you expect. The only thing you'll recognize is the lyrics."

SPIN magazine is going crazy with its July issue, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain" with a comprehensive oral history of the film and album and a free downloadable tribute that features nine bands doing song-for-song covers of the record's classic tracks.

"We approached a bunch of bands, and we got nine who were really into it," Doug Brod, SPIN's Editor-in-Chief told Billbaord.com. "All these bands did it for free - they paid for all of their recording time and they mastered all the tracks themselves." Unlike several other Prince cover records that have run afoul of The Artist's wishes, SPIN cleared all of the tracks and are covering the royalty expenses.

The 10-page oral history was compiled and written by Brian Raftery, who spoke to most of the key participants in the original project, including Wendy and Lisa, other members of the Revolution and the Time, Rob Cavallo (the film's producer and Prince's manager at the time), director Albert Magnoli, and the original screenplay writer William Blynn.

"We did a full court press to get Prince himself involved," said Brod. "He's a pretty tough guy to get a hold of, and he doesn't dwell much on nostalgia."

Awesome! I'm nearly as big a Greg Dulli fan as I am of Prince. My username is taken from a song on the Twilight Singers' first album.

The Whigs/Dulli are big Prince freaks (in the good way lol). They have done many many live Prince cvovers (Housequake, Doves, etc.). If you can find it, check out there ep Live Howlin Wolf for how they mix in Housequake with Jump Around and their own song. Dullli is a soul man at heart and is one of the musicians who does Prince music justice (cover version wise).

I'm a big of Montreal fan as well and this is great news! they have covered 4 Purple Rain songs live, of which the latest is Computer Blue. Based on that live recording we're in for a treat, of Montreal makes the music I would have liked Prince to make.

Of Montreal is definitely a band worth checking out. There is a lot of Prince influence on their new album, Skeletal Lamping, which has become one of my favorite albums ever. Also interesting, I saw them live in Boston in April, and their opener, Sugar and Gold, put on a fantastic show. The best part was the strong Prince influence in their sound, stage moves, and appearance. As soon as the frontman got into things full-swing, I thought it was as close as I would ever get to seeing classic Prince live. The similarities were fun and surprising. Check them out live if you get the chance.

Apollonia did vocals for twilight singers before so I'm not surprised, however I will be surprised if Prince doesn't have this pulled.

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I've never heard of any of the artists/bands who are doing the covers. Still, I would love to hear this, as Purple Rain is my favorite Prince album. However, I'm not gonna subscribe to the mag just to get the music...so I hope it'll be available through other means...

you've heard chairlift's song, you just don't know the name of the band. it's on tons of commercials, tv shows, etc. it's one of those inescapable perky alterna-pop songs that's everywhere all the time.

i haven't bought a Spin mag since i was in high school... but i guess i'll have to pick this one up... should be pretty good (or at least interesting) considering the bands.

So is so so rather mundane. I'm not to sure if they would be able to do songs such Housequake or Little Red Corvrete

IT WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY! Remember that Scandinavian tribute set. It was awsome.
