http://www.billboard.com/...3658.story From Billboard: une 11, 2009 11:41 AM ET David J. Prince, N.Y. SPIN magazine is going crazy with its July issue, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain" with a comprehensive oral history of the film and album and a free downloadable tribute that features nine bands doing song-for-song covers of the record's classic tracks. Dubbed "Purplish Rain," the nine song tribute album boasts a real coup: Apollonia, the one-time Prince protege who starred in the film, contributes a cover of "When Doves Cry" that she recorded with Greg Dulli and his band, the Twilight Singers. Other cover versions on the album include Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings doing "Take Me With You," Of Montreal's take on "Computer Blue," a punk-mariachi version of "I Would Die 4 U" and Lavender Diamond's rendition of the title track. The Apollonia/Dulli duet is currently streaming at SPIN.com, and the full downloadable album will be available when the magazine hits the streets on June 23. The album download is free, but a clue from the magazine article will be required for access. "We approached a bunch of bands, and we got nine who were really into it," Doug Brod, SPIN's Editor-in-Chief told Billbaord.com. "All these bands did it for free - they paid for all of their recording time and they mastered all the tracks themselves." Unlike several other Prince cover records that have run afoul of The Artist's wishes, SPIN cleared all of the tracks and are covering the royalty expenses. The 10-page oral history was compiled and written by Brian Raftery, who spoke to most of the key participants in the original project, including Wendy and Lisa, other members of the Revolution and the Time, Rob Cavallo (the film's producer and Prince's manager at the time), director Albert Magnoli, and the original screenplay writer William Blynn. "We did a full court press to get Prince himself involved," said Brod. "He's a pretty tough guy to get a hold of, and he doesn't dwell much on nostalgia." wow...sounds pretty cool. ON one hand I understand prince's POV not getting involved BUT on the other hand I don't understand it and wish he would get involved in something like this. damn it! I had a great quote from george washington but it doesn't fit here.

Awesome! I'm nearly as big a Greg Dulli fan as I am of Prince. My username is taken from a song on the Twilight Singers' first album.

Did you go to the link It seems to me they got a mixture of alot of acts who decided to show their love to Purple Rain. Isnt it funny that Sign O The Times is never really covered cept maybe The Cross and a few others. It seems to me that Sign o The Times is overlooked because people think the best publicity is to cover Purple Rain tracks. Which I think could be a mistake if Purple Rain keeps being the focus. I think it would be cool to see different cover albums of Prince. Maybe Mojo magazine could recreate Sign o the Times. Magazines could make it anniversary type thing. Who wouldnt love that? Especially if it's credible magazines. Sign O The Times LoveSexy DirtyMind Parade P.S. Not a fan of Spin Magazine but props to them for doing something original.

The Whigs/Dulli are big Prince freaks (in the good way lol). They have done many many live Prince cvovers (Housequake, Doves, etc.). If you can find it, check out there ep Live Howlin Wolf for how they mix in Housequake with Jump Around and their own song. Dullli is a soul man at heart and is one of the musicians who does Prince music justice (cover version wise). good thing I cook or else we'd starve to death...aint that a shame?

AND AND... Of Montreal covering Computer Blue?!?! WOW 2 both! On the indie stations, they always refer 2 David Bowie when discussing Of Montreal, but they never mention Prince.

I'm a big of Montreal fan as well and this is great news! they have covered 4 Purple Rain songs live, of which the latest is Computer Blue. Based on that live recording we're in for a treat, of Montreal makes the music I would have liked Prince to make.

Of Montreal is definitely a band worth checking out. There is a lot of Prince influence on their new album, Skeletal Lamping, which has become one of my favorite albums ever. Also interesting, I saw them live in Boston in April, and their opener, Sugar and Gold, put on a fantastic show. The best part was the strong Prince influence in their sound, stage moves, and appearance. As soon as the frontman got into things full-swing, I thought it was as close as I would ever get to seeing classic Prince live. The similarities were fun and surprising. Check them out live if you get the chance.

Apollonia did vocals for twilight singers before so I'm not surprised, however I will be surprised if Prince doesn't have this pulled.

This might be worth picking up that mag. Cool.

you've heard chairlift's song, you just don't know the name of the band. it's on tons of commercials, tv shows, etc. it's one of those inescapable perky alterna-pop songs that's everywhere all the time.

Oh, yeah, I think I have heard that on an iTunes ad before...the song doesn't do much of anything for me, to be honest. Pretty bland, IMO. Let's hope the band's take on "Darling Nikki" is a lot more engaging! I'm off to YouTube to check out the other contributors! I pity da foo' who don't read my blog!

i haven't bought a Spin mag since i was in high school... but i guess i'll have to pick this one up... should be pretty good (or at least interesting) considering the bands.

So is so so rather mundane. I'm not to sure if they would be able to do songs such Housequake or Little Red Corvrete

that saw the light of day. i own a copy. and the SPIN tribute will see the light of day. i doubt the company that publishes the magazine is trembling at the thought of prince's legal team. there ARE entities in the world scarier and more litigious than prince, believe it or not.
