On which tracks did Prince play bass during the Purple Rain-Tour ?...

...because i saw this once posted on an Org-topic :

Did he add solos while BrownMark played the bassic groove, or did BM play another instrument while P was poppin' that bottom ?

^ isnt that Brownmark's bass for the tour though? I thought he had a bass w/ that flowery design to match the set for the PR tour. Wasn't there some story about Prince and Brownmark dueling on bass, and Prince dropped kicked Mark in a show? I forget the whole story.

Are you sure ? I think we both talked about this not too long ago. You ( or maybe someone else but I´m pretty sure it was you) told me that Prince didn´t do aftershows until the European leg of the Parade ( Hit and Run ) tour. Maybe you remember that thread, I can´t find it right now but there were also a couple of pictures where he was playing congas. And he was wearing Wendy´s (fake?) fur jacket in those pictures as well so I assume that this picture and the other ones are all from the same show. The whole vibe of those pictures was that of an aftershow but, as I said above, someone ( you?) told me then that they were not from an aftershow because there weren´t any aftershows during the Purple Rain tour.

It´s interesting that he´s been using the same Warwick bass back then....if I recall correctly, this later became the one-eyed bass during the Gold phase.

That sounds tight. Would like to have witnessed that battle. Maybe it's filmed by someone.

But did P still rock the PR-look during the H&R-Tour ? I thought he had that Parade-haircut and wearing more suits confuse

The pic is from the PR tour for sure. He had cleaned up his look by 1985 for the ATWIAD album, plus he was filming UTCM in 1985, and still had a cleaner look in 1986 for the HnR tour.

Cool. Btw, was there actually a tour for ATWIAD ? I remember seeing a part of "America" being performed, but couldn't exactly notice if it was the ATWIAD-look or the Parade-look.

No tour for ATWIAD. The "America" video was a one off performance, for the sake of a video. It was filmed in France between UTCM filming. I forget the folks there. It was a group of kids from a school or something, but I forget the REASON it was those people in particular. (I wish I could find my DMSR book to reference these things better.)

Hit N Run started with "ATWIAD", then went into Parade songs. It covered "Raspberry Beret", "Pop Life", and probably random other ATWIAD songs. Most all the Parade songs were covered at some point sans "Venus De Milo" (to my knowledge).

Great info ! Yeah, i have some tour-info in books as well but all of them are stored somewhere else because my appartment is getting a make-over, lol. That "America" version sounds very solid.

The "America" video is hard to find. I love that Prince went on drums for a bit. He was just on fire throughout the whole thing. I wonder...did he ever play drums on the PR tour? Hmmmm.

Yeah, i saw it a part of it during an interview he did with people surrounding him, and where he discussed upcoming projects.

That was about the same time. The audio of that has been rotating longer than the video itself it seems. I forget WHY he did that, but it was an "instead of" situation I think. He was due to do one kind of interview, and ended up doing this pre-taped sit down thing. He's funny in that. I think it's the same interview where he talks about calling Andre Cymone and telling him "You NEED this....you NEED this song!", talking about "Dance Electric".

Lol, yeah. I'm also not aware yet if P ever performed "Dance Electric" in one of his shows as well, besides recording it himself.

I'm almost sure he performed it on the Hit N Run tour at a couple of shows. I can hear a live version in my head, but maybe I'm imaging that. HOpefully someone can clear that up. It's surely in the back of DMSR, under the Tour section.

The interview and the extended video for America were shown together on MTV in 1985. He has performed the Dance Electric live, I believe it was at a Sheila E. show in 1986 when Prince and the Revolution would join at the end. I am not sure exactly what show it was.

...Did a little research and the Dance Electric was played at several of the Parade shows including the June 7th birthday show in Detroit. Unfortunately it was edited out of the broadcast along with Alexa de Paris.

It is true, there were not any aftershows for the Purple Rain tour. There were some concerts that he did other than the Purple Rain tour at the time, but they weren't aftershows as we know them today.

This song was played sometimes on the Lovesexy tour during the piano portion of the show.

If you're referring to the San Francisco show for Romance 1600, I don't think he did that song. He joined them at the end for an extended "A Love Bizarre", but it ended after that cuz "she just wrecked the stage". lol

[Edited 6/7/09 8:23am]

The first time I had ever seen this pic was on here. I would say that this is from the PR tour because I can tell from the way P is dressed, his hair, etc. I saw another pic of P playing Sheila E.'s percussions dressed in the same exact outfit. The bass P is playing in this pic is Mark's. Mark used this bass on the PR tour. On the 3 shows that I went to on the PR tour, P never picked up Mark's bass or any other bass during those shows. P played guitar, piano and sung and did his usual acrobatics. Mark was the ONLY cat playing bass on the shows that I saw. My guess is that perhaps this was an encore where the band was jamming. On the third PR show that I saw, at the end of the song Purple Rain, the house lights came on and the band played America. This of course was before the release of ATWIAD so none of us had ever heard the song. They jammed on this for at least 10 minutes. P and the band were singing the song and after the second choruses, they just started jamming on top of it. P was soloing on his axe here and there, Matt took a solo and they just jammed on top of the groove untill P threw up his hand to bring it to an end. Then they walked off and that was the end of the concert. So perhaps this pic is from an encore to a different PR show.

I never heard of P and Mark throwin' down in a bass battle but that's not to say it didn't ever happen. I do know of when P dropped kicked Mark on stage. Mark himself spoke of this where he said on the Controversy tour, the first tour Mark played with Prince, that he and Prince were both running on stage and ran into each other. Mark said to play it off, P kicked Mark and then pushed him into the drum riser.
