and late 70's or early 80's recording by Prince

After finding out that it was originally from 1982, it sounded as if the song had the same style as Little Red Corvette. Btw, does anybody know if the basic tracks from the 1982 version of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" were used on the version we all know so well?

Yes, the released version uses the basic tracks from the 1982 recording.

Wow, I never knew this. Listening to it again though, it sounds obvious. Glad he went with LRC for 1999, but this song would have rocked on 1999

Interesting stuff - this song sounded SO timely in '87!
I remember reviews saying that he was parodying the kind of songs that Billy Ocean and Lionel Ritchie were topping charts with, and showing them how it should really be done...

although the later released versions has a few differences the released track is shorter and it doesnt have wendy and lisa on it

love that song!!!!! when it first came out i didn't know it was prince that sang it (as i wasn't a fan back then). i was 9 years old, and i just loved that song, would always sing along with it when it came on the radio! cool good memories!
