I counted 36 officially released Prince STUDIO albums today

....including New Power Soul since that's regarded as one of his but not Exodus cuz it's regarded more as an NPG album. Left out the hits and compilations since that was made up of various previously released tracks.
And I left out the live stuff and Elixer.

Is that right?

I listed all of the ones I know of... did a little research for the ones I forgot to mention... erased a few that are regarded as compilations and such...

I came up with 35.
While considering Lotusflow3r and MPLSound as two different albums

and I might be short an Internet release or two (I put Xenophobia & C-Note on my list and might be missing one)

shrug
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

you should have left Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse cuz they were still recorded in studios and it's not like any of his other albums were recorded as a whole all in one studio.

Well, it's all a matter of opinion... I definitely wouldn't include Newpower Soul,
unless you are also going to include Goldnigga and Exodus.

As for The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse, I'd include them
(as they're just as valid as Crystal Ball). Unless you limit the list to physically
released albums, and discount any releases that were download only.

I think for the most part, right on except maybe "New Power Soul". I consider it a Prince album and NPG in name only (perhaps trying to get away from the love symbol moniker since it caused so much frustration and confusion).

In New Zealand to Date the following have been released and therefore count as official albums. As you can see, I can bet you big money Prince has never heard of or wants to hear of New Zealand.
All the music that comes into our country is restricted by the one company SONYBMG which is generally a dinosaur which restricts flow and so we are fed a diet of gangsta rap and crappy techno Europop like Crazy Frog, as well as being forced to listen to our own lame offerings (Not anyone in NZ is a s corny as the guys from Flight of the Conchords, believe it or not we don't all act like Pee Wee Hermann or have aspergers syndrome.

I agree with above post about NPS, that one should go in the 'Prince' albums list.
sorry but I disagree with the comment about live albums - for many artists james brown,Johnny cash,Dylan, grateful dead have many live albums that 'count' towards their total of album releases. as prince is very selective about releasing live albums they must be considered important releases as they are so few and far between (not including the boots of course!). if he churned one out every month (which he could do) they would be less regarded as proper albums.

One review about LotusFlow3r noted that it's his 25th studio album and I do believe that's correct (the NPG releases and instrumental stuff are not counted):

1 For You 1978
2 Prince 1979
3 Dirty Mind 1980

I agree with above post about NPS, that one should go in the 'Prince' albums list.
sorry but I disagree with the comment about live albums - for many artists james brown,Johnny cash,Dylan, grateful dead have many live albums that 'count' towards their total of album releases. as prince is very selective about releasing live albums they must be considered important releases as they are so few and far between (not including the boots of course!). if he churned one out every month (which he could do) they would be less regarded as proper albums.

the subject of the thread is referring to "studio" albums. Live albums are, by definition, exactly the opposite.

One review about LotusFlow3r noted that it's his 25th studio album and I do believe that's correct (the NPG releases and instrumental stuff are not counted):

1 For You 1978
2 Prince 1979
3 Dirty Mind 1980
4 Controversy 1981
5 1999 1982
6 Purple Rain 1984
7 Around The World In A Day 1985
8 Parade 1986
9 Sign 'O' The Times 1987
10 Lovesexy 1988
11 Batman 1989
12 Graffiti Bridge 1990
13 Diamonds And Pearls 1991
14 Love Symbol 1992
15 Come 1994
16 The Black Album 1994
17 The Gold Experience 1995
18 Chaos And Disorder 1996
19 Emancipation 1996
20 Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic 1999
21 The Rainbow Children 2001
22 Musicology 2004
23 3121 2006
24 Planet Earth 2007
25 LotusFlow3r 2009

Nice counting but what about The Vault (considered a collection of old songs?)
& why is One Nite Alone omitted (cos it wasn't sold in the shops?)
N.E.W.S. was sold in the shops as a Prince album although it was Instrumental.

i suppose we'll have to wait if a discography appears on the website to see what he considers official.

29 Crystal ball / The truth (4 CD set) 1997
30 Crystal ball / The truth (4 CD set) (special container) 1997

38 One nite alone... 2002
39 One nite alone...live / One nite alone...the aftershow: It ain’t over (3 disc set) 2002

45 Musicology (promo) 2004
46 Musicology 2004

Why would you count Crystal Ball and Musicology as two separate releases just because of the packaging? That's being Prince trying to find creative ways to hedge the numbers . . .

Again, I had this list put together of all the CD's I have. I just copy and pasted it. I didn't feel like going through them to take out doubles.

BTW,

"One nite alone..." and "One nite alone...live" are two different CD's.

Yea, but Wikipedia has never been known for its accuracy and should never be seriously considered the gospel on ANY subject...

1 For you 1978 (Released 1984 here)
2 Prince 1979 (Released 1980 here)
3 Dirty mind 1980 (1981)
4 Controversy 1981 (1981)
5 1999 1982
6 Purple rain 1984
7 Around the world in a day 1985
8 Parade 1986
9 Sign o’ the times 1987
10 Lovesexy 1988
11 Batman 1989
12 Graffiti bridge 1990
13 Diamonds and pearls 1991
14 Symbol 1992
15 Come 1994
16 The black album 1994
17 The Gold Experience 1995
18 Chaos and disorder 1996
19 Emancipation 1996
20 Crystal ball 1997
21 The Vault: Old Friends For Sale 1999
22 Rave un2 The Joy Fantastic 1999
23 The Rainbow Children 2001
24 One Nite Alone 2002
25 One Nite Alone...Live/It Ain’t Over 2002 (I see this as 1 album)
26 N.E.W.S. 2003
27 Musicology 2004
28 3121 2006
29 Planet Earth 2007
30 Indigo nights (LIVE) 2008 (Not Sure about this one, but I'll let it!) Lotusflow3r 2009 (Not released in New Zealand yet, unknown if it will be)
MPLSound 2009 (I see this as a separate album), yeah but it ain't in SONYBMG controlled NZ yet!!!!

THE CONTENTIOUS ONES...

2 The Hits / The B-Sides (COMPILATION PLUS NEW SONGS) 1993
4 Girl 6 (COMPILATION + NEW SONGS) 1996
6 New Power Soul (NPG) 1998
7 Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic (REMIX ALBUM) 2000
8 The Very Best of (COMPILATION) 2001
10 Ultimate (COMPILATION) 2006
All have been available in New Zealand and therefore count.

So that's 30 albums (plus 6 contentious ones)

And don't get me started on the Side Projects: The Time, Madhouse, The Family, Bria etc...

1) SONYBMC is NOT the only international record company in NZ - ridiculous statement
2)Crystal Ball was released in NZ?? When?....
3)One Nite Alone was never released in NZ and was only ever available online...

Just sayin'...
